Hire Retirees?

How many of these guy still live in the city? And why would they come back?
  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Supt. Eddie Johnson are calling on people to come forward and tell police who’s responsible for the 11 murders among 74 shootings over the weekend. Meanwhile, mayoral challenger Paul Vallas has a proposal to help make that happen.

Fear is why so many people in the high-crime communities don’t come forward. Vallas says if the police department would bring-back 400 retired detectives, some of that fear would go away.

“When you have enough experienced detectives working in the detective division,” says Vallas, “who the community knows and is familiar with, they’re gonna be more included to come forward and co-operate. So they’ll have more confidence that if they co-operate with the police officers, there’ not gonna be retribution.”
This is one of those ideas that looks good on paper, but in reality, has a snowball's chance in Hell to come to fruition. The logistics alone are daunting:
  • pay (and how it affects pension), insurance, other benefits, union issues, liability, residency, disciplinary issues, shifts, expectations, the list is endless.
We see this only as a campaign issue.

The sheeps will believe this and vote Rham🐀🐀🐀🐀 in office because he would had saved the city by not hiring these retired detectives

It's a different job, like being a salesman at Menards, so it won't affect pensions at all. City employee, might be required to live in the city, but loads of us still do because we have family responsibilities. If it's limited to admin work, liability is virtually nil, or they should be guaranteed to be indemnified.

It isn't as difficult an issue as you make it out to be. A lot of people would probably do it for a few years, to keep in touch with old co workers and to cover the rising cost of insurance and r.e. taxes.

Only have been south of Irving park rd three or four times since retiring. Can't remember the last time some asshole gave me shit about anything- only have my own problems to solve. Life is good. Ill party on rahm's and eddie's graves where ever they get buried. Outliving them is what keeps me living healthy. We'll see who the last man standing is.

Bring back retired detectives ? I’m assuming the FOP would have something to say about that since there’s an active detective list. There’s no way that wouldn’t end up in a lawsuit. I’m close and if I lost my potential spot to a retired detective, you can bet I’ll join the club and seek an attorney to file a lawsuit. I’ve never ever considered suing someone, but it seems pretty popular in the department.

Uhm, Rahmie? You know that all those retired detectives, are by definition over 50, right? You also know that you can't draft them, right? What do you possibly have to offer to them to bring them back? Alright, fellow readers, new contest: What would Rahmie have to offer to get those Detectives to come back? Me first, one free execution of a homicide offender, by the Detective. Per year!

Nice thought, but in reality, the new "be the change" police department is not the place for a seasoned, knowledgeable veteran of old. The retirees would be aghast once they personally observed the condition of their once-proud police department. And, if that wasn't enough, the seasoned retirees would up with the middle finger and walk out the door as soon as some incompetent merit slug half or one-third their age unceremoniously told them how to do the job. File this idea in the round file.

Give a waiver to retirees who have moved out of the City.

While we’re at it, let working officers move out of the City after 10 yrs service.

Wow, that was difficult. Manpower problem solved, recruitment solved, and officers experienced with the workings of the Department would be handling administrative tasks instead of civilians (some of whom can nor be trusted with sensitive information) or perfectly healthy and able coppers.

I would not come back to the Chicago Police Department, no matter how much they wanted to pay me. The politicians have made the risks way to high and I would put my future in jeopardy. Now, they could bring some retirees and have them work in the detective division calling victims from case reports or doing administrative work and free up detective for the street, but never to work active cases on the street again as a sworn officer. No one in their right mind would take that job. What the mayor and the media fail to mention, ever, is the fact Rahm has made the police department one of his political patronage strongholds and has given in to the liberal forces and crushed morale and desire of the working cops. It will not come back for a generation. And, this is not to mention the crushing forces brought to bear from Preckwinkle and Dart and Foxx.

Hold on Juniors...you’re primary job responsibilities are not going to be compromised under the proposed plan.
Your case is yours fully, they’re only giving you a helper you can trust.
They won’t do interviews, crime scenes, canvassing or GPRs.

When they opened the new OEMC they rehired retired Real P.O. dispatchers...for awhile until the community complained about jobs.
The whole operation went south after that, above and beyond all the corruption tied to Management.

Retirees could supplement the Det Div big time, as experienced inside gophers but not as field agents that are bound by subpoenas.
Same applies to CAPS and Desk nonsense. No need to waste the youth on clerical duties.

Too many already, waaaaaaaay younger Dets, found spots as clerks and fear the outside world of interviews and court.
The Retiree can do the digging up of info beyond that of the ordinary, disinterested, biased and questionable civilians.
Plenty of retirees left if not for age but the bullshit that wreaks from the all idiocy conjured up from 26th & Cal.
Think a retiree wants to be traveling thru the ghetto just to go Shithole courts?

Part time, I’d consider it but not expecting it to happen, maybe they’d try it for a year or two.
Excess money will always be allocated for Sanctuary First efforts.

I’m close and if I lost my potential spot to a retired detective, you can bet I’ll join the club and seek an attorney to file a lawsuit. I’ve never ever considered suing someone, but it seems pretty popular in the department.

Go for it. The attorney will appreciate the retainer. Doubt they can bring back a detective in that role. Maybe as a civilian doing the CMO files which would free up detectives or as a civilian answering phones instead of a detective, but not as sworn

Oh, yeah, sure.

Enjoying your retirement, then get involved in a shooting.

1. Lose your pension.
2. Go broke paying legal fees.
3. Die and early death from all the stress.

No thanks.

It's not going to take away from any open Detective positions! These guys would be part time. Doing all the little time consuming stuff that Detectives have to do. This would let Detectives actually BE Detectives. As I am a Detective I would welcome all the help. Not having the drive witnesses to Grand Jury and search for them! Um yes I would totally want that!

Disban the entire department and start and over like the goofs want done with ICE. Annex the Cities South and West sides. Then hire a private security company to police the New Chicago. Think of all the money the city will save... no 911 center, Streets and Sans, Fire and Ambulances. Make the city smaller and more efficient. Yeah thats the ticket. Let Calumet City, Riverdale, Cicero, Alsip, Blue Island and Oak Park all share the pain and grow in size.

I can see it now. Seventy eight year old Detective with Pre-Alzheimers in the box with the perpetrator. The cognitively impaired detective keeps asking the perpetrator the same three questions over and over, and over. The thug is bound to crack after two hours of it. The only problem is, will anyone know how to write down his confession?

That’d be akin to Chinese Water Torture

On Tuesday, the Police Department refused to release current data on how many homicides and shootings it solves — known as clearance rates — telling the Tribune to file a Freedom of Information Act request. (From Tribune today) It is amazing how quick Rahm and Eddie tout the statistics that show "crime is down" yet refuse to say what the clearance rate is. What about transparency Rahm?

If you believe they wouldn’t be “touching” open homicides you’re a moron! Also, I agree with the earlier poster, if you’re on the Dicks list you better call your union and DEMAND you’re hired before some washed up retiree whose only intention is making some easy $$$. Remember, when they were old timers all they talked about was seniority- well, we listened guys And you taking an active dues paying member isn’t going to happen without a lawsuit.

Part of the proposal makes sense but bring bake those streetwise retirees in a training capacity for recruits academy training the initial phase is important it will produce better officers which could move them towards detective rank . Also upgrade the FTO program the department has to make a serious effort to attract and maintain quality training officers. With that said the politicians in this town care more about retaining office then to give the voters a realistic expectation of what they're entitled to.

Start by stopping any cold case work who cares if by some stroke of lick you clear a 25 year old homicide. It is a total waste of time when you have hundreds of current cases to work on. Fire the worthless head of deceives, she could not detect tampon in an girls sorority. Years of failed leadership and results, she must be really good on her knees is all I can say. Finally, Blue shirt says, "go talk to the shorty sitin on the divy, he's got a snapchat of the whole thing!" Retired guy replies, "????"And...scene"

Wow thanks for all the years of service as the real police. The guy that wrote this probably writes retirees and Police families traffic tickets. Stay away once you have left. Once your name goes on a report your dragged into a case and left open for lawsuits. Plus you get to work for shaky bosses who will also sell you out. Why would you want to get back into the aggravation game again. But there are guys who are taking the pipe on insurance and would run back to the job. As they say use caution on this one and think out the consequences when it goes bad,and it will go bad in this current atmosphere. Good luck with this one.

Mid 60' retired and tenured dick here. No way can the body now handle the streets as is. We are done with. The mind is sharp but dealing with punk ass hoods of the ghetto would not go with us. The policing of old is dead, RIP. You young bucks got your hands full being a dick today. The stress level is way beyond what us old dicks endured. ASA' and a SA who hates your ass and tells you , you are a fucking liar !

Barry and Rahm and a very clueless and idiot array of total merit gold stars are enough to make us old timer' puke. Chief' like Stapes and Sanchez....please ! The Sanchez got more baggage from later old days then a bag man, and is quite lucky not being in a federal joint.

The dick' and patrol guys today are treated like they are rabid dogs by the brass, politicians, and of course Special Ed and Rahm. They did an unforgiveable P.R stunt after the brave and good cmdr of 018 was murdered and played it to no end. Rahm and Eddie are classless chumps and not worth the dog shit in my alley.

Valles will get my vote anyway. Lightfoot would love to make Lincoln park a total section 8 housing area. on our dime. Racists lives and strives in Chicago and it is not the white and brown folks playing this old game already for two centuries.

God watch over all my hero' in blue.
