Term Limits

  • Former Gov. Pat Quinn on Monday filed more than 86,000 signatures to place a binding referendum on the November ballot that, if approved by voters, would set term limits for the current and future Chicago mayors and add an additional challenge for Mayor Rahm Emanuel to overcome in his bid for re-election.

The measure is not certain to end up on the ballot at all, however, as Emanuel allies could challenge the validity of Quinn’s signatures or seek to block it in court.

Noting that Emanuel is in his second term, Quinn said, “this is the right time to have a referendum on whether or not there should be more than two terms for the mayor of Chicago.”

“New York, Los Angeles, they have a two-term limit,” Quinn said. “We think there ought to be a two-term limit in Chicago.”
We expect numerous court motions and challenges, all of which will enrich connected lawyers and which was, most likely, the original intent of the effort anyway.

Anyone know why Quinn didn't collect signatures at any police stations? We got almost 11,000 a decade ago to reduce the size of the City Council - it would have put him near the 100,000 he said he wanted.

Why stop there? Include the Governor's office to the aldermen. Eliminate their pensions, their generous health care package and 25 aldermen positions altogether.

They should have made the referendum for the mayor AFTER Rahm, that way he might not fight it. I think he's pretty close to done anyway. His support might have made it happen.

Quinn. Just another rejected Illinois political figure who just cant seem to get a job after being tossed out of office and trying like hell to remain relevant and in the public eye. You would think after giving away 50 million to the political class in his , " anti-gang program" most of which seemed to disappear, someone would hire him. How about Dorthy Brown? It seems she and her phony counselor husband got a lot of cash from Quinn.

Here's what transparency means to CPS
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-edit-cps-sex-scandal-redact-20180803-story.html

523 children! Look at the picture of the paperwork that was sent look at all the hidden lines on here, you talk about a major cover up look at this here look no further in the mayor did say that we have a blue wall of silence what about this wall of silence what color is this with this be called the black wall of silence? I don’t know I guess the children are expendable have you noticed how silent it is been with City Hall with this have you also noticed that all of the leaders of the Chicago public schools are still in place getting raises and none of them have been terminated it is amazing the children are pawns in the game politics!

Where are the marches? Where all the phony’s priests phony’s revs? Crickets, that is all you hear why or not they taking to the podiums to the streets marching in front of the mayor’s house marching in front of all of the elected officials homes and City Hall where are they at are they sleeping or did they enjoy getting paid off and not doing what they’re supposed to be doing going after the real criminals the ones that let this happen to our children!

Pat Quinn, reformer.

Where was his reformer message when he passed out $50 million on the south and west side in his "anti violence initiative" in a desperate attempt to get reelected?

The Casinos in Indiana and various car dealers really loved his reform money.

Howard Morgan...... That's why bubble head didn't go to any police stations. Morgan shot 3 PO's and Quinn let him out of prison. I was getting all these junk emails from Quinn's group. I replied asking why Quinn let Morgan out, I was taken off the email list.

Need term limits at the state level even more so, just like many/most states. Governor, Lt. governor, comptroller, treasurer, secretary of state, state superintendent, attorney general, state senate, and especially state house. Yeah, that means you Michael Madigan.

Unfortunately that turd will die in office before term limits are passed.

Isn’t this the same Pat Quinn who opposed term limits when his opposition (Bruce Rauner) made term limits one of his platforms?

How many terms in city and state offices has Quinn held?

After any of his terms been viewed as successful?

Sounds like Quinn is upset about his loss and lack of support for his 3rd term as governor.

GTF out of here with your BS potato head.

Madigan will see to it that some other 'fill-in' topics will instead be on the ballot.
It's not the first time that the Democrats have roadblocked unfavorable topics on their behalf off the voting ballots.
A mere typical evasive maneuver as seen in the past.
Madigan didn't even have the common courtesy to give Quinn a 'Reach Around' as referred to in 'Full Metal Jacket.'

Not quite, gov Potato-Head. New York City *had* a two term limit but little Mikey Bloomberg didn't like that and he didn't want to leave office. So Mikey being Mikey, he bullied the City Council and had the law changed in 2008. New York City now has a Three Term Limit.

(Hey Potato-Head, how hard is it to do a Google search before opening your yap and saying something dumb?)

Just a regular humble guy, Quinn has always been pro-police and protector of our pension.
Rahm despises any competition and interference.
Arrogance that only compared to another weak, ineffective braggart and failed politico named o’hussein.

Quinn knows Rahm’s probably sent his henchmen to write it a few hundred phony names on his petitions, and when the time comes his weasels will scour the pages and point out the discrepancies to void the entire mass. Something Rahm won’t challenge or care do with allegations of phony voter registrations. I believe Quinn managed 30,000 additional signatures in the past month to reach + 80,000.
Remember what Your City Council is proposing for the Nov Ballot:
- How to spend CPS money
- How to spend on Mental Health
- Ban plastic Straws.
These are not valid referendums, they’re mis-management issues.
Banning a straw? Either you use them or not, like a plastic bag or water bottle with added taxation for sure.

GET OUT AND VOTE - NO EXCUSES.
DUMP RAHM - Dump Section8’Arena in the 45th Ward.

For the record, Garry “Jerry Gmac” McCarthy - just lost my vote. I was really behind his effort but I don’t see much of a campaign here.
Declared himself as a Democrat, which is ok but he denounced the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump.
Look it up, he was just endorsed via Tweet by former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) and then throws it back with a snarky remark.
Can’t have that.

Paul Vallas - mild mannered, honest and nationally recognized as a real reformer.
Perhaps not a POTUS DJT resistor or supporter but I don’t think he will be a nasty divisive foe like Rahm.
What do we have to lose?
Plenty under Rahm or any other radical Democrat. Pension values and taxation for starters.

You can thank short shanks for taxes, he sold off parking meters, the skyway, the millenium park restaurant, and God knows what else all while cutting crime by threatening the coomanders with their jobs if they didn't cut crime. cutting crime meant he didn't need to hire Policemen and that along with early retirement led to a run on the pension, higher taxes to pay for what he wouldn't do. RAM is a victim of circumstance but guilty of not hiring Police to trim the budget.

Sad to see only 31 comments on the most important possible law to come around in years. Come on people this would be the start of ending the stronghold the Democrats have on city. Start with Mayor then expand it to cover ALL elected officials. If you don't get behind this one your doomed to repeat the current state of affairs. Either support this or STFU about anything regarding your city government.

Term limits won't have any impact in Chicago. The machine is so powerful, that it is a revolving door of corruption. So much money is being stolen, through corrupt contracts and deals, that a legitimate candidate will never stand a chance in an election. The park district, board of ed, cta, ohare, are bottomless pits that will never be given up.

Representing the people in government wasn't intended to be a lifetime job. Back when this country was founded, men left their homes, farms, and jobs to serve the people, then went back to their regular lives. Political office has devolved, almost to a Monarchy in some instances. We have as an example locally the Daley's, Madigan's, Lipinski's, and on a national level, Bush's and Clinton's among others who feel governing us is their right, and they can pass the office on down to the next family member. Until we somehow disabuse the elite of this notion, this passing the torch scenario will continue.

Stop the illegal alien voting. Purge the voting rolls of dead voters. No early voting. Open and close polling places, especially the ghetto locations, on time. Voters show ID. Ballots printed in English only, since you have to be a citizen to vote, and to become a citizen, speaking English is required. And if the republicans had any stones they could put some real effort into breaking democratic stranglehold on city and county. That would be a great start.
