Incompetent Judge
For the first time in memory, the Sun Times appears to have found a judge unworthy of retention:
- Thirty-four times in the past six years, the Illinois Appellate Court has upended decisions by Cook County Circuit Judge Maura Slattery Boyle based on her errors, overturning her decisions at a pace far higher than that of other judges.
Slattery Boyle is one of the six Cook County criminal court judges who will be on the ballot in November, seeking retention. The other five have had their verdicts reversed or cases sent back for new hearings a combined total of 38 times during the same period.
Those other five judges have been reversed a total of 38 times - Slattery Boyle has been reversed 34 times all on her own. So what exactly qualified her for judgeship? Here's a clue:
- Slattery Boyle grew up in Bridgeport, two blocks from the home of the late Mayor Richard J. Daley. She graduated from John Marshall Law School in 1993 and went to work for the state’s attorney’s office.
In 2000, at 33, she ran for judge with the backing of Cook County Commissioner John Daley, Mayor Richard M. Daley’s brother. “I’ve known her all my life,” he said at the time. “She has a very good background.”
Nice recommendation. And her family history?
- The alliance of bar associations that rates Cook County judicial candidates has an agreement that it will not rate any candidate favorably who has fewer than 10 years of court experience. Slattery Boyle, who did not seek the endorsement, was given negative ratings.
She won anyway. Six years later, as she was running for retention, Patrick Slattery, her brother, was convicted of fraud for giving city jobs to former campaign workers for then-Mayor Richard M. Daley.
Again, we remind readers, you're better off voting "No" on all judicial retentions.

Since when do we listen or agree with the Suntimes? I’m voting “yes” for Slattery. Judge Slattery treats all police who wnter her small courtroom with respect (even jagoff cops). She knows scumbags when she sees it and is a right thinker. Have we looked at the Appellate ct lately and wonder why they over turn her cases? Don’t we believe the Appellate ct takes orders from police hating politicians? How about we ask “good judges” who we know for direction on retention? I’d rather have a building full of Slattery-Boyle’s than a bldg full of Hooks.

A judge who actually holds defendents to the law and hands down stiffer sentences only to have her rulings overturned by the 0bama appointed appeals judges who created the society we now have to endure. Her statistics are being compared with the judges who brought about the policy we as law abiding citizens condemn. FOP should applaud and endorse judge slattery-boyle and encourage a retention vote!

FIRST OFF SCC, Not sure the last time you testified in a criminal trial at 26th st, but I have had a half dozen cases in front of Judge Boyle, and I can say she is PRO Police. Did you ever think she gets reversed a lot because she is convicting sooo many people? Second, The appellate court is a joke, Most of them are hard left liberals. And no, i m not a good friend of Judge Boyles , but I have won every case infront of her with stiff sentences. She IS a friend of the Police.

I voted no on Stephanie Miller, as did enough others to vote her out of office, only to see her appointed. The will of the people means nothing in the land of Lincoln.
If you read the article she is overturned because she convicts to much, and they feel her sentences are too high, and she believes the police to often. I can see how these are problems for the PD's office, but for us it is a blessing and she is being called out for it. If she is not retained, no worry, they will come up with a substitute that will acquit everyone and the problem is solved. Be careful what you wish for you will get it.

It's possible she's being reversed by liberal judges. Why else would the Slum Times make bring it up?
They are calling her out because her sentencing in cases she is on fits the crime. That runs counter to the cat ch and release tendencies of most other judges in this County. There are plenty of judges for us to hammer on this blog, this isn’t one. She is one of the few pro police, and pro law and order judges out there.

Veeeeery Interesting. I read the entire article and Judge Maura Slattery Boyle appears to be -- what used to be called -- 'A Hanging Judge'. Unlike the incompetent criminal-friendly felon-hugging Crook County judges, this judge is 180 degrees opposite and appears to not take any bullshit.
So she may mey overturned more than most Crook County Judges but at least she errs on the side of Public Safety. As to that knock against her for 'being harsh' and handing down 'longer than average' prison sentences, cry me a f--kin' river. Her stats are being compared to incompetent criminal-friendly leftist judges who would hand out Probation for Convicted Murderers if they thought they could get away with it.
Which brings me to this hit piece and its authors; Jacob Toner Gosselin and Kobi Guillory of, 'Injustice Watch'. First of all there's something OMITTED from this Sun-Times piece, and the article that appears on the Injustice Watch webpage, the HEADLINE is different. It turns out that Judge Maura Slattery Boyle is, as they put it: 'Chicago's Harshest Judge'.
For some odd reason that's not mentioned at all in the Sun-Times?? I guess that could be assumed by the article's inference, but knowing she's the toughest of them all removes all doubt and could lead the reader think; 'Well gee, maybe that's why she's overturned so much'. After all, if your the toughest in anything, there's always someone looking to knock you down a notch or two. In a Judge's case, that means defense attorneys Appealing your rulings. So Injustice Watch can take that critique of the judge and stick it up their collective asses.
As to the Appellate Court & its judges, that's another matter all on its own. Maybe some intrepid journalist should look into how many times THEY'RE rulings don't stand and are overturned by the Illinois Supreme Court!
ps: In case anyone's wondering, 'Injustice Watch' is another leftist organization full of Social Justice Warrior idiots.
Is she the most knowledgeable about the laws, perhaps not, but the activist and the attorneys who represent the garbage that get arrested all the time are afraid of her courtroom. That says a lot! She doesn't put up with their crap and she locks them up. She supports the police unlike so many other judges. She is the only judge that has my support for retention.
FYI, Bridgeport lost most of their clout years ago, even Richie didn't care about Bridgeport except for his family members and a few others who had dirt on him. Most of that is gone now.
The sun times is doing the opposite of what should be getting done. Calling out a judge that actually finds people guilty. A great way for “the people” to vote her out, thus forwarding the agenda that they’re pushing.
She is very pro police and an actual good person at heart. She is one you want to vote YES on, trust me.

I have known Judge Slattery- Boyle for many years .i have sat in her courtroom and observed her as a judge . Judge Slattery is a very good judge who is pro-police and takes no nonsense from lawyers from the wrongful conviction movement . She has control of her courtroom and does an extremely great work as a judge . Ninety - percent of the overturned convictions the jury found the defendant guilty . The Scum - Times is gonna decide who is a competent trial judge ? How did they rate the judge who allowed a twice convicted cop killer to walk in an I Bond ? I support Judge Slattery - Boyle and hope you will also !

This judge is pretty fair in her courtroom to all parties. The real scam is the innocence project and these wrongful conviction attorneys, why doesn’t the Slum Times write a piece exposing their unethical and questionable methods?
She is one of the only judges that I’m voting to retain. She’s A okay in my book. Connected Bridgeport family or not.... she’s the only judge with enough guts to stand up for the police. If we weren’t living in an upside down world right now, the sun times would be investigating judges who refuse to sentence convicted repeat offenders the sentences they deserve.

Her verdicts are being overturned by the appellate court - yes, it sucks.
Yet, at least her fortitude continues to shine through by making determinations that uphold the law - the law of the land.

Rather than demonize her, perhaps the better answer is to Advocate for her.

I was starting out as a new Detective around the same time Maura was beginning her career in Felony Review. I worked many cases with Maura and found her to be fair, competent and Pro-Police. This is just the latest step by Preckwinkle and her ilk in their attempt to destroy the so called justice system in this county so member's of the "Community" are not held to account. I'm disappointed SCC is buying into this. Maybe you want more Judge Hooks'. Do not fall for this. Every Police Officer and their family members need to vote YES to Retain Judge Slattery.
Her rulings are fair and setences are largely appropriate. She has an appreciation for victim rights and displays respect for the police. It’s for those reasons that these cases are being overturned or granted new trials. The offender must prevail in Cook County...unreal!

Retired and can no longer vote in Chicago, but my theory was always, that a no retention vote ever could hurt a judge that shouldn't have been retained in the first place; could only help the cause to kick one off the bench.
Seems to me that the Innocence project is giving Maura a hatchet job because she does not give in to the lies that they spew. We need more Judges that are not intimidated by these lying lawyers. She gives stone cold murderers longer sentences, so what they killed a human being. They should spend the rest of their evil lives in prison.
