- A brawl involving dozens of teenagers broke out near Chicago’s Water Tower Place Tuesday night, prompting a flurry of 911 calls as the mob spread to Chicago Avenue and State Street.
The disturbance grew so large at one point that some businesses in Chicago’s busiest tourist district were forced to shut down, CBS 2 [...] reports.
“The group is running westbound on Chicago,” one 911 caller is heard saying.
One person who witnessed the fight asked to stay anonymous, but told CBS that a group of about seven teenagers jumped a person walking down Chicago Avenue between Wabash Avenue and Rush Street.
Witnesses reported seeing teenagers and adults fighting at Chicago Avenue and State Street, prompting McDonald’s and Chick-Fil-A to lock up.
So merchants in Chicago actually have to lock their doors, effectively closing down their businesses, due to the misbehavior of people (or folks) who couldn't find their guns to add to the daily carnage totals. Can the protests be far behind that these racist businesses denied some poor youths the ability to spend our hard earned tax dollars?

The email came from Lindsay Kahn, senior manager of public relations for GGP, the Fortune 500 real estate entity that operates Water Tower Place.
The CWB Blog helpfully included the email and business contact information of Ms. Kahn in case anyone wants to point out that Water Tower Place exterior is a building on the public way in full view of the public and accessible to the public at large.

When people used to ask me about Chicago versus places like Detroit, I used to say that downtown/the Loop/Michigan Avenue were always safe. I've been there many times, having a good time without a care.

I guess that's not the deal now. I've been in downtown Detroit (25 years ago as well) and after 5:00 p.m., it belongs to the animals.

Your recourse, go to the suburbs and spend your money where you don't have you put up with the danger and chaos. Talk to some people who know what it was like prior to the 1960s. You could go anywhere in Chicago without a worry. Now about 2/3 rds of the neighborhoods that were vibrant have been destroyed.
Good for Crime In Wrigleyville And Boystown (read the story) for printing the story and not backing down from Water Tower Place. So what Water Tower Place wants to do is rewrite history and pretend nothing bad is occuring at their location. Kind of like the City of Chicago and the news media in this town whitewashing all the crime. You would think if a company, WTP, had the best interests of their residents, shoppers and employees they would be warning them of crime problems at that location so they would be aware and take precautions. But what they do is deny and say, all is well. Best advice is don't patronize the place.

Met someone for dinner near Water Tower a couple weeks ago. Used to be I'd take a nice walk back to Union afterward. Now, it's always a cab or uber from the front door to the station. At Union, I noticed an Amtrak officer at the Adams St. entrance. I thanked him for being there, as they used to have such a problem with panhandlers opening cab doors and hustling for money. He says, "yeah, but the city doesn't allow us to chase them away anymore". WTF, who's running this asylum. Wait, I already have my answer. Head on a swivel in the city.

The street gang crowd has been exiting the Chicago Ave. CTA station for a few decades if I am not mistaken. I went to Loyola in the mid-80's and that area and the McDonalds was a haven back then. Robberies on that CTA station happened with regularity and fights in the McDonalds followed suit. But, it looks like it is getting worse. The police need to start making arrests instead of pushing these fools back on the trains. I have heard that the police department is hampered in charging people with " disorderly conduct" ? Is this part of the problem?

Yes, we must not ever forget him. It seems that the Housing Police and the good that they did have been forgotten. They had their problems, mostly derived because of political influences, but overall they did a good job and tried. Their biggest mistake was taking some of the officers from Chicago and promoting them way beyond their capabilities.
Fr Faker fleiger better get over there and demand that they unlock the doors of the Chic Filet and McDonalds. They don't lock the door when they see a riotous group of Asians coming their way or a large riotous group of whites coming their way.

CBS 2’s Charlie De Mar reports the horrific final moments for a Chicago teen, police say, killed by peers his own age. Friends of Guerrero say he moved to West Chicago from Mexico in fifth grade. They describe him as a good friend and student.

Crime is crime and laws should be enforced. I know it's a different day and age, and that the younger coppers have about as much respect for us old timers, as dinosaurs of the good old days. The National media doesn't really realize how many out of control neighborhoods we have. The big 70+ shot weekend I saw several shot in Uptown and a few in Rogers Park. The media sometimes wrongly assume that the 'North side" is always safe.
CTA needs to have some interconnections with all the various lines that end up running to that $100 Million station underneath block >whatever<. When these fucks are pushed onto a train - let them think they're getting away - redirect to the $100 million station, and when they get there - ARREST and PROCESS all of them. Haul them off to County for a hearing or whatever... Just make sure the 'process' takes 72 hours to complete...

If the FTO did his/her job correctly, the recruit will not pass the training cycles until the recruit demonstrates proficiency. Unfortunately, their are a percentage of FTO's that will not fail a recruit, they just pass them.

I travel by CTA--for various reasons, no choice. I hope police authorities have some mercy on innocent riders. The prospect of dozens of these "yutes" being pushed into a subway car one is riding in is horrific. Up on the street, you can get away. Locked in a subway car, you are trapped. Please tell Supt Johnson to think of us innocent riders. Perhaps he could board with the "wilders" and gallantly protect the passengers?

EEOC wouldn’t take that case. They only take cases that affect numerous people. Now if theFTO didn’t pass the prior 10 females, they would take the case. They spend their resources on complaints that affect groups of people. Plus what would be the complaint, all FTO has to do is document it
Downtown after 6 pm in Chicago has always been a problem. I worked downtown in the late 70's to early 80's. As a white female, who used the CTA to commute as I couldnt afford a car, I was always lookinng over my shoulder, particularly after dark. I always made sure I got on the train before nightfall. It became a whole different world after 6 pm. And not a good one.....
