Sigh
- An on-duty Chicago police sergeant was charged with drunk driving Wednesday morning after failing a random drug and alcohol test at the police department’s headquarters on the South Side.

Wow, if the W/C knew he was hammered and let him drive from Ohare area to 35th st they should be bummed up also.139 holy crap
I’m not defending what he did. MM, I just hope you get the help you need. Please seek it.
Maybe he is diabetic
The watch commander who sent him for the test didn't observe him to be a little tipsy in 017 and let him drive all the way to HQ?
Maybe he took a Uber there did anyone actually see him drive there?
Was he dropped off at H.Q.?
Please get some help.
Do you young bucks want to continue calling your sergeant to every incident that you refuse to make a decision on? Just because your sergeant tells you to do something, doesn't mean its the right thing to do. Using the excuse "I did it because the sergeant told me to do it" is not going to get you out of trouble. Learn to trust yourself. And if you can't, you need to quit this job.
I wonder if they thought the machine was malfunctioning and asked him for a second breath sample. Wtf
I can do that without a phone call.
How random was it? They should have never let him drive.
Nice guy. I've known him over 30 years. I haven't seen him much recently, but never heard anything derogatory.
Gotta love how they post his salary, like that has anything to do with anything.

No amateur there. He/she is a pro for sure.
WHY WHY WHY would you not hit the medical rather than go blow???
I looked at that and thought hmm what unit is 139.... then it struck me, DUI is .08. To blow .139 :O
Must have been mixing drinks all tour. Random drug gets midnight guys at the end of the shift. And then driving around in a squad car the whole time too? Some real stellar supervision there.
What about that lieutenant 'S. McD' on days in 014??
She comes in at least 1 or 2 times a week drunk off her ass!!
The superintendent actually picked her to go to captains training. What a fuckin' joke this department is.
One day she insisted on taking out 3 PPO's in a squad car and driving while she was still drunk. An old time officer (now retired) on the desk told her she better not because of her "condition" and she threatened him.
I'm sure shell be promoted to a commander spot in a unit soon enough.
sorry Mikey, If I can help in any way dont hesitate to call me , Bobby C

".139 .... at 0400 hours. That takes some doing."
Ha! .139 ... child's play, SCC, mere child's play.
From what I understand, he blew that hours after actually reporting to Random Drug.
Now I'm no scientist, but I'd wager that the good Sergeanto wasn't closer to .00 hours earlier.
Obviously too impaired to formulate the plan of just not reporting for the breath test when ordered to do so.
Me? I'm parking the squad, poppin' smoke and gettin' the fuck outta Dodge. I'll be answering the phone and/or doorbell only once I'm sober as a judge. You can start the administrative proceedings for me going AWOL/AWOP, but I sure the fuck ain't serving myself up on a silver platter for the numbskulls at IAD to hammer me both criminally and administratively.
Remember, kids... don't ever volunteer shit and only cooperate to the extent as mandated by the GOs and only while represented by legal counsel. They have to inform you when the criminal portion of your investigation is over and when the administrative portion starts. But why even voluntarily give them the ammunition for a criminal portion if the opportunity to avoid same presents itself, right? Ask some old timers from 010 about what Officer K _ _ _ A did when left alone with his "suspect bag" in an unsecured room by IAD ;-)
Good luck, Mike.
Cmon man there's nothing random about that. Check the call log history
There is a little guy in 002 who blew higher than that a couple hours into his tour not long ago and he wasn't charged with dui.
callback?
I’m not saying what happened to him is good. However,it beats striking a pedestrian on or off duty and ending up in prison. He is being given a gift. I hope he accepts it.
This is a game-changer!
Knew LT Steve Scholl for 20 years never saw him sober on the job the good days 10 Dist was the best

R/O has no knowledge if you're alluding to the "El Tee" being inebriated while on duty. Can't say I've ever had the opportunity to witness such a thing.
Otherwise, if he were still alive and on the job today, Steve would see to it that Mike didn't get within 100 miles of the Breathalyzer/RDU. Same goes for just about any other copper with tit in such a wringer.
Old School to his core, he is sorely missed 14 years later. This job would be a much better place if guys like him were still around to run shit the way it needs to be ran. Everyone should have an opportunity to work with a guy like Steve at some point in their career. It's just too bad those days are loooonnnnggg gone.
Bad things happen to good people. He truely is a nice guy, worked with him for years and NEVER observed anything that would suggest any on going problem. I'm so sad for you Mike & pray for a soft landing.
A fire department spoken only identified as "Paddy" related that the fire department has higher standards. "Our fire personnel has the police department beat and scores much higher even after working a full-time job two days in a row and arriving at the firehouse", he mumbled. Hydration is an important component for fire fighting operations, Anything less is breaking with tradition.
callback?
No. It’s last call
Was the car impounded?
There are no more administrative blows, if you're ordered to do a breath test because you were driving those results are admissible in a criminal hearing. Case law from another off duty PO ordered then used in court. No Garrity when it comes to DUI.
I remember the "count" in 025 years and years ago mixing screw drivers in his personal car before the tour.
MMM is a jerk, plain and simple- Defend him all you want, it just means you havent dealt with him recently

Dude what the fuck are you talking about? The thread is about a Sgt who got jammed up......you off your meds?
Perhaps the sergeant needs some help with his/her struggles, not bashing.
Why do these new officers have to call the SGTs for everything? They should be embarrassed. 20 years ago our SGTs told us not to call them unless we were dead. These new officers are clueless.
Back in the day, that was average for afternoon roll call.
Now, kees me you fool!!!!
I entered the academy with seven years of sobriety. Retired two decades later.Sober 30 years. Let the circus parade come to you.
WHY WHY WHY would you not hit the medical rather than go blow???
10/18/2018 12:48:00 AM
Because, because, because when you’re officially notified you cant bail, go on the medical, and go home to glue. It doesn’t work that way. You’re disobeying a direct order. Go and ask the ex LT from traffic that tried that. Didn’t work so well for him.
Times have changed. They want to fire and punish all of us! Just step a little bit out of line!
10/18/2018 12:03:00 AM
Blowing .139 while on duty and driving isn't stepping a little bit out of line.
I wonder if they thought the machine was malfunctioning and asked him for a second breath sample. Wtf

I'll drink to that!

WHY WHY WHY would you not hit the medical rather than go blow???
10/18/2018 12:48:00 AM
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
It was a Random test. Once you are called for random, if you don’t show up in the allotted time frame it is
automatically considered a failed test. If you go on medical it is also considered a failed test.
If you are referring to the “arrest” for a DUI, I’m not sure that this will stand up in court. Did the arresting officer
see him driving the car? Who administered the breathalyzer exam? Was it the arresting officer? This seems like
there could be a lot of holes in this case.
BTW Sgt PLEASE get the needed help that you need. And that goes for EVERYONE that is having problems.
I know it’s funny to joke about and make fun of, but I hope this man gets the help that he needs.
I don’t know him, but make no mistake- he needs help.
Many of our brothers have found themselves in much worse predicaments, having killed someone behind the wheel in that state.
While technically it’s “no harm, no foul” at this point, he would’ve kept rolling the dice. And you can only roll the dice so many times before you crap out.
Take the wake up call my brother, and heal yourself!!!
There are resources available and people who care.
Who saw him driving? 10 grand from now he beats it
Back in the 80’s, that’s the level most of the day crew in 014 started at. Doulbled the BAC level by the end of shift while washing down the free pizza from Johns, hot dogs from armitage and western, burritos from Lazio and greasy burgers from Duks!
God Bless Billy “Wild Turkey” Connors from the old 014. Greatest FTO. Well never see an FTO like that again.

You mean the "SWEATY TUNA"!.
The Sweaty Tuna was in DC years ago on a chilly evening, and I witnessed him pull out a 12 pack from under his jacket. Think he had a cooler built into his jacket, for when he was not near a refrigerator. It was hilarious to see him as a fill in WC on a Sat or Sun morning, with sweat pouring form his forehead from his usual all night drinking binge at the Club in 010.
I remember back in 002 years ago, everyone on the watch being shitfaced. Back then, they figured it was better than being high on coke or heroin.
Back in my day, unless he was in an accident, we would have driven him home. Parked his car in front of the house and made sure he was alright.
Different times I guess.
For the poster that commented "Why not just hit the medical?" it's because you can't lol. Otherwise anyone drunk/high would never be tested and be on the medical.

What do you mean? Diabetics blow .139 on a breathalyzer because of their disease? What am I missing?
Really neither here nor there, but I can remember when the legal limit was .15.
Seems more and more Sgts are getting into trouble.
"Just step a little out of line, they want to fire and punish all of us"??? Listen here stupid... this is exactly why this dept is sooooo fucked up. No one is saying you can;t get rip roaring drunk but if you are stupid enough to show up shit faced to work its ON YOU!!!!! Many years ago when I hear a saying when somebody unexpectedly took a day off. When asked where he was they would say "day off drunk". There's a reason you stay home on those occasions and if there is a "problem" then get some help idiot! This just makes everybody look bad because this stupid shit makes the press and they love to make us look like shit.
Everyone giving bad advice about how he should have hit the medical or left and went home and faced an AWOP are giving bad advice. Once the WOL orders you to go down it’s a direct order. Failure to show up is a charge of failure to obey a direct order and is a fireable offense and they DO go for 30 pending on that one because they assume you are trying to keep from pissing hot
Came on the job in 1970 and went to 012. All of the new guys got paired up with the drunks on the 1st and 3rd watch. Some of the supervisors were drunks also. We were nothing but babysitters for these lushes. We were sent on two man cars on jobs but in fact we were all by ourselves.
We had a Sgt. in 018 yrs ago who would drink his 5th of Vodka in the Zoo by the polar Bears on Mids, Come check off, he'd be as drunk as Otis from Mayberry.....
Well if he went down to blow before he got into a squad car he wouldn't get the DUI. This guy needs help for sure or maybe it was a one time deal. Only his co workers know. He will get reduced in court, go into a program and get 30 days. But he will be subject to a check anytime now, not just thru the computer which supposedly picks out randomly.
The late LT Steve Scholl only drank at work his old lady didn't want him drinking at home the good old 10 Dist best time I had on the job
In the day, that was happening a lot. Bosses at the time were ex-drunks so a lot of the incidents were resolved; they were forgive for their sins. Way different day my friends, be safe and leave as soon as possible.
This goes under the category of "you can't be that stupid!" He may be a nice guy but wow!
"Times have changed. They want to fire and punish all of us! Just step a little bit out of line!".... that is a lot out of line!!!!
13 isn't shit he can still drive Get a good Attorney beat the case hands down might take a few days IAD fucked up
Call Attorney Terry Lefever he is the best hands down!
How in the hell was he off duty!
Mike is a really good guy. Hope he checks himself in and straightens himself out.
“Did you drive here today?”
Entrapment.
“No. I took, ‘was directed’... to the Red Line.”
Acceptable.
Hope he learned his lesson.
Comment On The Post, Regarding Calling Your Sgt. I must confess, early in my career, I did call my Sgt. "Often". More times, than not, I had great supervision. Very, very true. Some people call a sgt on nearly every call. Just because he makes a wrong decision that does not mean you will be covered.
To swerve and protect.
I had a great w/c on first watch when I retired. If they punched your number to go test he would always ask, “ do you want to go test or take time?”

You’re asinine, good thing this moron didn’t kill someone
A .139 may seem high to normal drinkers but alcoholics can have incredible tolerances. A family member works in a ER and once had a guy at a .42 BAC and he was still talking somewhat normally. Opiate addiction is the new epidemic, but alcohol is still destroying people.
This Department has a LOOoong history of babysitting drunks with a problem. I've seen Lockup personnel come to work half in the bag, and leave more in the bag. I've seen squads pull over so the drunk partner can vomit. I saw a copper slur his words at roll call. I've been on long enough to hear of them dying soon after retirement. I'm pretty sure this wasn't the first time this Sgt's. intoxicated behavior was observed.
We all learn to read the writing on the wall, or listen to the sound of the bell tolling for thee...Do a fellow copper a favor and quietly tell them, to get some form of help with his problem. Is that so Hard?
Why can't common drunks get help before it becomes a danger? We have all heard the stories over the years. The fact is, if your are routinely drunk on duty, you are a danger to yourself and others. GET HELP!!! Call Peer support! Living in inebriated denial is NO way to go through life son...
There are no repercussions for getting help through the proper channels...Incessant drinking is also very expensive hobby. Why would you not seek help???
We drank everday at work how the job change retired in 2004 I miss them good old day
There are people who drink every day and go to work, and no one would notice. Those are true alcoholics. Its a shame. I was related to one. She died because of the booze.
Watch party's went for 2 days Chicago park Dist pool were open only to CPD a lot of drinking and gambling and every thing was free I miss them days
Is he that experienced to think he can drink and not be drunk? How much did he drink? He drives himself and if he knew he was drinking going to your own demise. Wow how incredibly stupid or insane can you be?
So sorry how just one guy can make it look bad for all of you. All of you do your jobs well, and deserve so much more respect than youre given. It just gives more ammunition for the haters out there to look down on all of you.
don't blame the WC , some drunks can walk and talk normal and blow .13

When I was in the academy, many moons ago, instructors said don’t bother the Sergeant, you get paid to make decisions, and I always tried to live by their advice. Some instances it is unavoidable, but for the most part you can noodle it out yourself using your common sense, which doesn’t seem too common today.
Here endeth the lesson.
Maybe he is diabetic
Another dumbass who doesn't know what he is talking about. Diabetics can have the "odor" of an alcoholic beverage due to their disease but they blow .00.
ssc if they are going to fire this sgt (which I hope they don't) then why didn't they fire frank radke when he smashed up a couple of unmarked squads, hey frank I work in 016 now and I take retire now and yes I will dui you in a new York minute.

Yeah. No they don’t.
I can recall waking up to do PT when I was in the Army after a night out, and although I doubt I was ever at the .13 level, I was probably skirting the edge of .08.
Those were the days, and the morning workout was actually the best cure for the hangover/residual inebriation.

At work, before work and after work. The Crown Royal never ran dry. When he’d show up and play Watch Commander it was a real comedy seeing a drunken buffoon wearing the same uniform all week, stumbling about grunting and looking ready to vomit. He basically drank himself into an early grave, never saw a pension, left behind a wife and daughter. If you’re following in “Big Steve’s”footsteps, please get help.
Drive right to the hospital for mental health evaluation. Give them your gun and strip down and crawl under the covers and take a nap and long vacation. Guy prob needed it.

Not true. The courts found that Garrity cannot protect you from evidence you already provided. The point of Garrity is to TRY to get your job back AFTER getting fired for refusing to provide incriminating evidence against yourself.
Kinda like refusing to do the field sobriety test, all they then got is weaving or no headlights or whatever.

Mike was always very neat and clean. He went on the medical and was gone quite some time for I believe a heart ailment. When he came back he wasn't the same. He looked tired and worn down. It's a shame, he's always been nice to me.
E.A.P
Sorry, but if anybody working around him noticed he was drunk and didnt do anything about it "in house" is just as bad. His excuse is that he has a disease. Lt should have been notified. Lt should take him in private and give him a tough love ass kicking. Lt himself or some trusted old vets drive him to AA, st michaels, to eap, to chaplains... whoever. Zero tolerance after that. At at least you give the dude a reality check and a chance.
For all the Steve Scholl commentators who are talking shit. Go FUCK yourself. Steve saved many coppers. You never had enough balls to say anything to him when he was here. I know 2 or 3 guys who would gladly listen to your shit in person give them a call. You know how to reach them.

The topic the other day was about p.o.'s calling sergeants to the scene and letting them make the decisions. The point here is be advised that you can have a drunk sergeant show up and make your decision, or a sergeant who is stupider than you show up and make your decision. P.O.'s need to grow up and use their brain and keep learning the job as they go along. Now let me get back to my ganja.
I met Mike a few years ago, he seemed nice. He was all messed up back then, I hoped he would get his shit together. Apparently he did not. I really hope he gets the help he needs now!

I storngly disagree. It's true we all have to.learn to make decisions, and it can be tricky, and there areany ways to handle jobs. But if in doubt, what the not ask a supervisor? One has to learn, and no one is born with this knowledge. We were all young and new once. Give these guys and gals a break. Things happen. I feel it takes a long time to learn how to be a good police officer. Plenty of people helped me, I try to help others.

.., ahahahahahahahahahah ah oooo my god my stomach hurts from laughing oh god
Nope he’s drunk siting in the hole waiting for check off!!!!!!’
The units all have people who cant be on street unless they take a pill or a pull. The bosses all know but do nothing.
Alcoholism is a disability in the police work profession. Take 65% and free medical
I remember 2 goofs on a wagon back in the early 90's. Had a pony keg in the front seat and drank it the whole tour. Ended up rolling the wagon 8 hours in. The look on their faces was fucking priceless.
There was a supervisor on the midnight shift who always brought his lunch that included a whole onion that he ate like an apple. Guess why?

God Bless Billy “Wild Turkey” Connors from the old 014. Greatest FTO. We will never see an FTO like that again.
Amen
RIP Billy

Sorry to hear he passed away. Was a great guy.
Hes getting more then 30 days with the new discipline matrix. He will be fighting for his job. I hope he gets the help he needs. Bad situation all the way around.
What cracks me up
many of us on the job are on some heavy legal medication.
on the side of those little bottles it instructs you not to man heavy machinery or drive.
So one day the city might decide you the next person under the bus because you did not want to be on the medical for a few months.

For all the Steve Scholl commentators who are talking shit. Go FUCK yourself. Steve saved many coppers. You never had enough balls to say anything to him when he was here. I know 2 or 3 guys who would gladly listen to your shit in person give them a call. You know how to reach them.

Sounds like you're advocating being drunk at work and drinking yourself to an early death.

Hey you idiot when I get summoned to the scene of some nonsense by an idiot, or idiotress, who never should have been hired, it’s my pleasure to direct them to do everything by the order and in accordance with all applicable laws, policy and procedure to the extent the ensuing physical, emotional and cognitive exhaustion will temper any future decision to take shortcuts and try to middle the sergeant by saying, “uh, duh sargent said it was otay!” And if you think otherwise it’s clear why you still sport your faded blue shirt.
10/18/2018 10:59:00 AM
The word idiot is gender neutral moron. Now go wash the yellow armpit stains out of your white shirt.
10/18/2018 06:30:00 PM
Uh, sarcasm Mr. Bitter Blue Shirt. I’m not your boss because I don’t know basic grammar. Now go get a bus check, chump.

Stop calling yourself a boss and I wear sweat pants to work, go finish up your log.
When will the LT from 014 days be called down to provide a sample... she needs help BIG time!
Had an old black sgt. in 007, back in the mid 80's/ His normal blow was always at least a .20. You would never know it as he kept it that way in order to function. I also had a guy smash his car, was slurring and could not walk, he blew a .00. Immediately called an ambulance, he was having a diabetic episode.

Seems more and more Sgts are getting into trouble.

I’ve said it once and I’m saying it again, the supervisors especially the sergeant’s are what’s wrong with this department.
Some sergeants have no business supervising anyone.

You must be one of his flunkies he was an embarrassment when he was drunk which was most of the time...

There is a little guy in 002 who blew higher than that a couple hours into his tour not long ago and he wasn't charged with dui.
That little guy hasn’t learned and drinks as the day goes on, he won’t learn until someone gets hurt.
Sounds like the old Midnight shift on Sunday morning.
Steve Scholl died young I believe? He was not yet 50. Or, do I have him confused with someone else? Didn't Steve make Lieutenant in 1988?

MMM is a jerk, plain and simple- Defend him all you want, it just means you havent dealt with him recently

A bad divorce will do that. My interactions with him pre-divorce were fine. Never tried to jam up up a blue shirt, instead would go out of his way to help. Like others who actually know him, I hope he gets the help he needs.
And to whoever alerted the media, GFY.

Because cutting it would make him cry?
Because onion rings would take too long?

Because he was one-ion a little short on protons?
It is disappointing that anyone has to use a officer's full name to make a point on this blog. The Lt. was old school, where bosses had balls and watched out for everyone. One thing has not changed in the Department: it's not what you know but who you know.
Way back when...Sgt Warner, 015 desk, had two quarts of Schlitz in paper bags under desk. Wore his WW2 ribbons on his reefer in St Judes. Scared shit out of PPO's. different times
