CC Sheriff Deputy Killed

Traffic accident on the way to work:
  • An off-duty Cook County Sheriff`s deputy was killed in a car crash on the far Southwest Side. Nick Theofanopoulos, 39, was involved in a head-on accident near 103rd and Kedzie in Mt. Greenwood on Monday night.

Theofanopoulos was on his way to Christ Hospital at the time for a work assignment. The crash was recorded on surveillance video. Police say a 21 year-old woman was driving a Jeep. The vehicle drifted into oncoming traffic, and plowed into the deputy's vehicle.

Police say no one has been cited in this crash, and have not indicated what caused the woman to drive into oncoming traffic.
The vehicle "drifted"? Sounds like either a medical emergency or distracted driving.

Or drunk at three time the limit.

RIP Deputy.

Yes RIP our brother, thank you for your dedication and sacrifice in an otherwise thankless job.
Heaven awaits.

Thank you CPD, Oak Lawn PD and Evergreen Park PD for coming out and escorting our fallen Officer. Our sheriff couldn't even support our fallen. What a "great guy" lives two blocks from the accident site and two miles from the hospital. A total POS. Nick was a good guy and your support will never be forgotten. There have been far to many loses recently.
Again thank you so much. RIP Nick

I don’t understand, wasn’t the woman involved drunk?

Run a red light, no headlights and drive in opposite direction? Sounds to me like a case of something.

From the video with her jeep (no lights) I'm guessing drunk. The damage didn't look catastrophic to either vehicle. I'm curious if his seatbelt wasn't worn or malfunctioned. A tragedy regardless and lives torn apart, RIP Sheriff.

There was a video shown on a Ch 9 Newscast. (they may have pulled it by now)
Either she was texting or drunk.
From the video I would go with texting while driving.
In the video as she drifts into the northbound lane, a mini van moves over the curb to avoid being stuck by her, then she drives into the CCSO's vehicle.

What do you want to bet the Jeep driver was texting? Cellphones can be deadly. Maybe Rahm should ban them before he leaves.

Probably texting or updating her social media. I can’t believe how many cars race to the red light just to look at their phones.

I'm suspecting that the female was impaired. And why hasn't she been charged, since the video clearly shows she was at fault? What's up with that?

Why did this happen? Public has a right to know. Is this a dui or a illegal? Is our sanctuary city at fault in some way ? I smell a attempt at covering up something. Since when is a officers death such a secret.

Something isn’t right. No lights on wrong side of the road and no charges. Papers said she was backing out of driveway, making a left turn. Video shows she was going straight for a good distance before veering into his lane

The video speaks volumes. She did not exit a driveway. She was driving on the wrong side of the road with her lights off and almost hit another vehicle prior to hitting the sheriff. Something isn't right here! Clearly seems that she was impaired.

Charges are pending against a south suburban woman who police say had a blood alcohol content that was more than three times the legal limit when she struck another car, killing a Cook County sheriff's deputy on his way to work

The driver of the "another" vehicle successfully took evasive action. If only the deputy had seen her coming. With no headlights showing, the Jeep must have just blended into the background.

No sympathy for this young adult. You chose to drive intoxicated and killed another motorist. The news plays it out like we should feel sorry for her because she has no prior arrest. If convicted she will have to do the minimum eight years according to state statue.

Interesting the Sheriff has to investigate if it was an on duty death. On his way to his external assignment in uniform.whats to investigate he had been given this assignment from a supervisor.
