Time for a New Idea

  • Chicago taxpayers will spend $1 million to compensate the family of a man who died in 2015 at the lock-up of a South Side station despite his repeated requests for medical attention.

A wrongful death lawsuit filed four years ago in Cook County Circuit Court alleged that Charles Edward Jones died because Chicago Police officers denied Jones the medical treatment he desperately needed.
We have no idea of the circumstances, nor do we really care, except for the fact it cost us and other taxpayers a million dollars for someone who never would have earned a million dollars in twenty lifetimes.

Time for some new ideas, like in other counties and other states. When someone gets arrested by a smaller department, they don't always overnight in the town lockup. They're transferred directly to the County Jail, sometimes even processed there, and left in the custody of sheriffs who get them directly to court. Sometimes, there's even a medical facility on the grounds of (or within) the jail so that prisoners can be treated and cleared for court all inside one building.

If Cook County won't go for that, perhaps it's time to shut down the outlying lockups and go back to five Areas. Prisoners are processed in the District of arrest, then sent to the Areas to await transport to court. Optimally, there's a trained paramedic in every Area lockup who can determine who gets Dramamine for being dope sick and who needs to see an actual doctor to get stitched together - you know, people actually qualified to make medical judgements to limit City taxpayer liability.

But that probably makes too much sense.

Driving to work on midnights in 011, almost every night you could follow the the ambulance lights like a beacon to the front door of the station for a dope-sick prisoner. Much love to all the generations of CFD paramedics who ever worked "Killer 10."

How about stayin fetal. I know I’m gonna get the “I work my ass off everyday. I took an oath...” bla bla bla. Ok. So smart. Spend days. Weeks in fed court. Where they dredge your entire life out to people that couldn’t care less. Proactive policing is, in my opinion, becoming more n more dangerous. Most will not believe me. They’ll continue to do “their thing.” If you really knew what happens you’d think differently. But I’m just a “jaded” jagoff. Take a look around ya n see n ask yourselves: “where does self-preservation come in?”

If anything our union is ball less. Not a word heard from them after the 025th district Commander lied to the OIG about stealing citizen's tax dollars. The channel 2 news reporter even said that they reached out to both Police Headquarters and the Union whom both declined to comment. Our union President should have held a press conference bashing this asshole but we don't hear a fucking thing. I guess they expect the blog to do all their vocal work.

As far as McCarthy goes I think everyone will agree, (except for certain department members that are a little 'slow') that Compstat is ruining this organization. Most of these Police Commanders probably failed math and couldn't add without a 1980's calculator. Compstat is too complicated for these idiots to follow in a reasonable manner. All they know how to do is push numbers and try to kill crimes statistically. Do you really think McCarthy would kill his own creation with the ego he has? It would be ten times worse.

I got flak the last time I posted this but I don't care. Lightfoot would be better for us as Mayor then Gary. Unless your a proactive police officer, then you are playing Russian Roulette with your career. Just be reactive and barring any bad luck you should be fine. I feel bad for proactive cops but if they haven't gotten the memo yet then they are on their own. It's called Darwinism!

Whatever, he may not have earned $20 million in the span of 20 lifetimes… Quite the opposite, he would likely cost well over that in a single lifespan. Interestingly, a service member who has never been arrested, attended some college, has deployed to risk life and limb for their country is killed...their family is not given nearly as much for their service. Interesting concept that I will never, ever understand.

Oh please, stop it. You're not a doctor, the lockup personnel are not doctors. You don't play one on TV nor at work. If one of these fools gets sick, tell the desk sgt that you have one to go to the hospital and document the time of your request. Let them die in the hospital, where it will be hard to blame you for their death. Stop taking responsibility for these no account low lives that get arrested. They whine they are sick, off they go to the hospital, your liability just got diminished greatly. Tell me, are we really still going to risk our livelihoods for these bad actors in todays anti police environment?

Quit making drug arrests would be another good idea. If people want to kill themselves then go ahead. In this day and age of information everyone knows the dangers of heroin and cocaine. You can't stop stupid people from doing what they are going to do. It's usually the gang and tactical goofs that lock up some obese elderly ghetto female, that's already knocking on death's door, for dope possession. Then they hand over their hot potato and get an early duck and everyone else has to deal with their mutant arrestee that's wheezing and getting dope sick.

Yes it's difficult because of all the pretending to be ill to get out of the lock up and potentially a chance to escape or get an I Bond. Many years ago didn't Cook County jail have a hospital wing called the "Bridewell" ?

from Cook County jail wedsite
Spurred by a series of federal court orders and overcrowding, the CCDOC continued expanding the jail’s housing capacity.

Promising horizons
Sheriff Thomas J. Dart sponsored legislation such as the Rocket Docket, advocated for a cashless bond system and promoted electronic monitoring for non-violent offenders. Over the past decade, the total on-site detainee population went from near capacity to approximately 7,500 individuals. With less inmates to house, Division 5 is no longer an inmate housing unit, Divisions 3 and 17 were demolished, and Division 1, the “Bridewell” previously belonging to Chicago, has been decommissioned.

After more than 40 years of operating under the Department of Justice’s oversight, the Cook County Department of Corrections underwent a systematic overhaul and in 2017 was ruled in compliance with a federal consent decree.

Yeah if there are no criminal in jail that means they are all on the street victimizing us

Perhaps it's time to stop getting involved by stopping, detaining, chasing, arresting people. All of those actions will get you disciplined, sued or maybe charged and going to prision for doing your job. Let the concealed/carry people take over, recently a few good outcomes with them. Put yourself on autopilot and just enjoy the ride.

In DuPage County they have nurses at the county jail. Except they are there to screen all incoming prisoners and if they claim to have any type of ailment the nurse refuses them and you have to take your arrestee to a hospital. It’s not easy sometimes explaining to an emergency room physician making $300,000 a year why they need to write down that your prisoner is “cleared for incarceration”.

Ever try to deal with an arrestee seamed to be a mental? Holy shit. Why can’t we take him directly to Cermak. Instead the arrested gets put on lock down in some hospital and we end up rwoc because we can’t be in the mental facility with weapons to stand guard. It is a total mess. How has this not been addressed yet?

Just as it took Decades for the Chicago Police Department to get out of the business of handling dead bodies; it will take millions of dollars in lost litigation, and cops being fired, before the Department realizes that we are NOT in the business of running mini- jails! There is One Jail in Cook County, and they should be processing prisoners. Jails and Corrections is very different from Patrol and Enforcement! The concept of District or even Area lock-up facilities; is archaic in this era of a litigious society. Stay Strong! Baby "G"

The dumb ass running for mayor of YOUR city is correct about times are changing. It's time that you, the cops, change with the times.

Cops use to be the protectors of society. Society, at least in Chicago, no longer wants you to protect them. You cops are banging your head against the wall. The rock them, sock them days of policing are in the past. Go to the calls, call every asshole, regardless of age, sir and madam, tell them it is either a civil problem or you'll take a report and submit it for judicial review. Don't charge the sound of gunfire, take your time and the problem will resolve itself before you get there.

The fewer cops on the street the more opportunities for the community to celebrate its culture.

The Millon’Dolla Man...and suppose the estate of Charles EdwardJones (sounds financially viable) can now reimburse the city for all his contributions to the life of crime, property loss, medical costs and arrest processing costs like copier paper (a huge expense) with their own civil suit.
Of course firstly the bottom feeder attorney still gets his 40% cut before the city.

Think they once proposed civil judgements against deadbeats but took backlash from the caucus and the commurnity, putting a lickity-split kibosh on it.

I'm sure county wouldn't go for it, but I've long said non bondable arrestees should just go to Cermak Hospital when they complain they need to see a Dr. Other arrestees should be printed and given an I-bond so we don't have to deal with the hospital details. They are getting I-bonds anyway. I'm sure it would cut down on a lot of requests to visit the hospital if they knew they were going to Cermak regardless.
