Here a Tax, There a Tax

  • For more than two years, Chicagoans have struggled with a nagging decision at grocery stores and other retailers – pay 7 cents for a disposable bag, or somehow do without.

Now, if Gov. J.B. Pritzker has his way, shoppers across the state will face a similar choice.

In his inaugural budget, Pritzker has proposed a 5-cent tax on all plastic bags used at checkout in Illinois. The goal is to reduce waste and raise revenue.
Unless Chicago is exempted from the tax (home rules stuff), Chicago shoppers would be saddled with a twelve-cent bag tax. That's enough to drive some shoppers to the suburbs.

Will everyone across the state pay the new tax or will there be exemptions carved into the tax bill?

What good will it do to go to the suburbs? If it gets passed (and I’m sure it will) the suburbs are still in Illinois. The burbs just won’t be paying as much I’m assuming?

The people of Illinois wanted him and they got him and they are going to get his policies good and hard, just the way they deserve it. Me, just more fuel for the fire to leave this state and watch it disappear in my review mirror. You wanted him, you got him. He all yours Illinois. Have fun with those taxes and everything else a Liberal Democrat brings with them into office.

Easy drive for me to County Line Rd. or Cass Ave. But then again I'm going to Kentucky soon to look at properties. My buddy who was a suburban cop moved there 3 years ago and has 10 acres of land that's beautiful and pays $400 a year in taxes... I'm done...

What else could it be other than taxes?

So if I decline to pay 7 cents for a paper bag, I get no bag and supposedly reduce waste. Yet the cashier will still print out and hand me a foot long paper receipt for the three items I purchased. Makes no sense.

No, that's enough to drive MANY shoppers to WI and IN for ALL their groceries, cigarettes, and gas.

What are they thinking?? Leveling MORE tax is going to generate more revenues?

It don't work that way and this demonstrates how naive MANY politicians are, who only have a hammer in their respective "tool bag of skills". TAX TAX TAX is NOT the only thing you can do.

CUT SPENDING! CUT OUT OVERLAPPING BUREAUCRATIC Agencies.

Take the CTA, METRA, PACE and the RTA and merge them into one Regional Transportation Authority - cut out multiple Chairmen, Presidents, multiple Boards of Directors, their duplicated benefits & pensions, and all the patronage jobs.

That may not solve everything but it sure would show some real visible progress in trying to cut out duplicate jobs that all deliver mediocre service at best.

Now if I can think of that why can't Pritzker and all his "experts" come up with something even more comprehensive?

These guys in Springfield are now just starting to chew around the edges of taxing retirement income too. They say no but it keeps coming up in conversations down there. When they tax plastic bags, what are people going to do about picking-up dog poop? I'm afraid a lot will just leave it where it lays. I always ask for double bags for just that purpose.

And this goof is also talking about more cigarette and vape taxing. I already leave cook county for both, but it would not bother me to go to IN or WI for those items. Oh, and I try to buy any liquor outside of crook county and don't get hit with that liquor tax. Just stock up on these items.

1. Perhaps more people will now drive to a grocery store, since they can simply load their groceries from their shopping cart (after checking out) directly into their car without using any bags at all. This is not unlike what happens at discount shopping club stores (Sam's Club, Costco) with no shopping bags. And if you leave your cloth bags at home or in your car, no problem.
2. If enough people don't use bags (see #1), you don't need as many baggers. Laying off baggers could offset the cost of the tax for those who use the taxable bags. Unintended consequences, Governor?
3. Speaking of Sam's Club or Costco, shoppers can buy 1000 plastic bags there for roughly $15.00 including tax (or 1.5 cents per bag) and bring their own plastic bags to bag their groceries. Easier to stuff in your pocket than cloth bags.
4. Why can't stores simply sell plastic bags (at 2 cents per bag) for shoppers to use in bagging their groceries, and thereby avoid the 5 cent per bag tax on "free" bags? There is an aisle full of (single use) plastic trash bags (of all sizes) for sale already, so why can't stores sell small plastic bags at the checkout for carrying groceries? Customers would bear the cost of the bags themselves, but the State would not get the 5 cents per bag additional tax (which otherwise amounts to a 250% sales tax on a 2 cent bag).

Of course, some people probably will not bother to try to avoid a “small” tax on bags, or a “small” tax (one cent per ounce) on soda and other sweetened drinks (Toni’s brilliant idea is bound to return), or a “small” tax (10 cents per bottle in Chicago) on water in plastic bottles. Others may do what it takes to avoid these taxes by using cloth bags, or by buying unsweetened drinks, as long as it's not water in plastic bottles.

And some may just get tired of getting nickel-and-dimed and just move out of Illinois.

Ha, ha the Nutt just took office and this is only the beginning of the Democratic Death by Tax torched. Every month or so another tax idea or bill floated, a nickel here a quarter there some dollars here pretty soon another 15% or so has been added to your tax burden. The sad part is that rather putting any and all revenue to the state debt it will be used to buy more votes for useless community pandering programs. Like the new Democratic Universal income all the socialists candidates are fawning over. State goes deeper in debt giving your tax money to people who refuse to work. But come next election you will keep the Democrats in power until there are no more taxpayers left in state. Great job Illinois voters.

It may just encourage people to bring their own bags. I see that a lot these days anyway. The plastic bags with handles are a whole lot more convenient in most cases than the old paper bags were although the paper bags tended to be bigger and sturdier, but when I can remember to bring them the reusable bags are a lot nicer.

But these days I don't do much shopping. I just type in what I want and when I want to come get it and when it's ready they send me a text message and I go pick it up. I just drive into the parking lot and a nice efficient employee comes out and loads the groceries into my car. Or order them from Amazon Prime and they come to my house in a big box.

LolWhen they tax plastic bags, what are people going to do about picking-up dog poop?

Most of the time the cheap plastic shopping bags you get aren't very sturdy and have holes in them so they really aren't all that suitable for picking up after the dog. I use small rolls of heavy-duty bags that I would buy at Walmart or the pet store made for this purpose. These things are tough. You can't hardly stick your finger through them if you try. Just stick your hand inside the bag pick it up pull the bag off inside out and tie it off and it's done. There are more elaborate versions but over many years of having dogs I found this was the best.

A billionaire "businessman " and all he can come up with is the standard democratic mantra of raising taxes? Here is the answer for Chicago, use the TIF funds to fund the pensions, 4 years they will be fully funded. Find out why the lottery money isn't being used for schools, then start using the money for schools. Limit government pensions to one. Term limits on all political offices. If you are convicted of a felony you are no longer entitled to welfare of any kind. Term limits on all entitlements. 5 years and you are done, you never get another handout again. People need to be responsible for their own lives. Look I just saved the government billions a year. Oh yeah and cut the number of aldermen to a third. Get warranties on all road projects, if they start falling apart within 15 years they have to fix it. For free. I guarantee you the roads will be made much better. And finally, stop electing these idiot liberals into office. How many times do you need to be kicked in the face before you learn.

RE: I noticed that has at COSTCO has gone up from $189.9 late December 2018 to $247.9 this evening.

What else could it be other than taxes?

I like how Jay-Bee the Hut says that a progressive tax will be on the rich like him. You do KNOW that he is a trust fund fat baby and the trust is probably outside Illinois. Hell it might be outside the country!!! Bottom line, he will not be paying Illinois taxes on all of it except for an ocassional trust distribution so he can go to McDonalds. Man, Indiana real estate is going to get expensive when everyone flees this communist shithole of a state.

It's easy tax to beat, until you realize that they're estimating huge revenue from the tax, which they will never get, leaving a hole in the budget they will need to fill with another tax that you can't beat.

This isn't rocket science

God forbid, you might have to spend some of your clothing allowance or duty availability on a few .99 cent cloth bags. Maybe buy them at a garage sale cheaper. I don’t know. Bag tax is an easy tax to beat. F*€k ‘em."

someone said that 1,000 folks a month are leaving Illinois, most for Indiana.....not sure about the numbers, but...Indiana has a cap of 1% of value on property taxes (some counties have an additional small % tax for local schools)....anyway, there seems to be a building boom in Indiana....anyone thinking of leaving Illinois for Indiana should go sooner rather than later...if not Indiana, then maybe Tennessee, Kentucky, Florida, Alabama, Arkansas, Texas ?....don't wait

It could also be that they changed from winter blend to the summer blend already. Big difference in price between the two and they charge more for the summer blend because more gas is used I. The summer

Very simple. Crude oil was $43 a barrel in late December. It is now roughly $56 per barrel.
