DCFS Abets Child Killer

  • The state’s Department of Children and Family Services says it is investigating a caseworker assigned to the family of a 2-year-old boy who was beaten to death Monday at his Washington Park neighborhood home.

The toddler, Ja’hir Gibbons, was found unresponsive by his mother at their home in the 6500 block of South Prairie Avenue after he was repeatedly struck by his mother’s boyfriend, Dejon Waters, according to Cook County prosecutors.

Waters, 21, is charged with first-degree murder in Ja’hir’s death and was ordered held without bail during his initial court hearing Thursday afternoon.

Cook County prosecutors said the DCFS caseworker assigned to the family had been to the home only two days before Ja’hir died.

On Thursday evening, DCFS announced the caseworker was being investigated for allegedly falsifying records.
There was a rather huge-ish scandal back at the beginnings of our careers involving DCFS, falsified records and a couple of dead kids. One kid might have been missing for months before the caseworker asked after him. It was actually standard practice at one time that DCFS was the LAST place you called because kids were in more danger with them than the abusers.

Looks like we're headed to those bad old days again. Maybe Kwame will prosecute someone?

It's a joke! If I had a dollar for every child pulled out of a home and the courts placed them back home, well lets just say I could donate the pension! When they started the BS about balanced and restorative justice years ago that was taking steps backwards! Then they raised the age for juveniles in many offenses. Now the democ"RATS" want to let 16 year-olds vote!
Tell me these "RATS" aren't out of their fucking minds with the BS reasoning, OR LACK OF IT, that they flip-flop back and forth!!!

suggestion

DCFS workers should have GPS and body cameras.
You can then document when they visit and record the actual interviews.

NOT VERY COMPLICATED

It appears that DCFS is just as complicit as the offender(s) in the death of the poor two year old toddler.

Most DCFS investigators work from home and only show up at the office on the first and sixteenth of the month for some reason...

Kwame is too busy in his office preparing his first Easter Basket safety list press conference. Red peeps will not be sold in Illinois as they may remind someone of a certain president.

Ja’hir’s father, Robert Gibbons, who lives in Waukegan, said his son’s smile “could light up a room.”

The abuse was long-standing how was he not aware, involved?

Seems DCFS investigators consistently fail to protect their underage charges. Perhaps too many unqualified employees? Too many lazy-ass employees? Or an impossible task, to protect underage children while still honoring regulations which require these social workers to respectfully tippy-toe around dysfunctional (and often substance-addled) parents, "protecting parental rights", obliging "ethnic traditions" of physical punishment of said children, drinking and drug-abuse within household, hoarding and/or unsanitary household conditions, ex-con and/or criminal boyfriends/SOs, etc. Seems like impossible job-description requirements for even the most qualified social worker, and worse, DCFS seems to hire the least-qualified least-motivated folks.

Foster-care is as ineptly monitored, poorly executed, and serves as a money-maker for often mercenary caretakers interested only in the cash. A child in foster-care in Illinois, unless an infant, has a poor life-quality prognosis long-term.

In an ideal world, Illinois officials would realize that DCFS's mission is impossible to execute, and rely on police departments to arrest parents who physically-harm their children, and rely on neighbors, relatives, and school-teachers to report suspect child abuse so that police can investigate home, inspect children, and make arrests.

DCFS is like the CPS when it comes to burning recklessly through “resources”.
Always threatened with budget cuts only to have funds increased and positive results from retreaded, incompetent slugs never come.

Top IL priority: Police and pensions need substantial reforms.

Stay Fetal.

Way to many times while working the desk (on seniority bid) had useless dcfs "investigators" come in to do a missing on the kid they were supposed to check in on awhile back, easily more than a week. I would always make my desk sgt. order the report done!!!

I call BS. You can't be the police. You don't have to "make" your sergeant order a report done. You just complete one.

Seriously, if DCFS took every kid who was in danger from mom’s “boyfriend”, there wouldn’t be a kid left in certain neighborhoods. I spent four years in Chicago taking care of kids with suspicious bruises, abrasions and fractures. DCFS would be called and they would “monitor” the kid and mother for a while, but they had no control over who mom let live with her.

My experience was that when a child died from “non-accidental trauma”, 9 times out of 10, it was the “boyfriend”.

Granted, DCFS is worthless, but they’re worthless because they don’t have the ability to take children at risk out of dangerous homes because of political realities; and even if they could, they don’t have any place to put them. Given that situation, is it any surprise they can’t hire competent people?

This seems pretty accurate. These social workers are as handcuffed as the police when dealing with the "citizens" . Perhaps worse. as they aren't armed when walking into these "impoverished" areas. And like any government job a lot of incompetents and layabouts have been hired. The trouble is every time one of these social workers cannot or doesn't do their job and a kid dies , you know who will get sued by other members of the fambly and some shyster lawyers. Got to pay attention these things , the lawsuits will eat up government dollars and reach your pension fund, "sooner" or later. IMO , it is in the police interest to do what they can to help, push , force, DCFS to do their jobs

Like a lot of dysfunctional government bureaucracies, the good people come and go, but the incompetent accumulate. And as the incompetent get “seniority”, they end up as managers, which further accelerates the departure of anyone competent who hires on.

Even the few good DCFS workers who are still working are stymied by the complex and often Byzantine regulations, rules and policies which force them to be “extra-special careful” not to offend certain ethnic groups. The result is - and I’ve seen this myself - is that a kid from a white middle-class family who has a “suspicious bruise” is more likely to be removed from the home than a kid from a single-parent home in “the community” whose older sibling was beaten to death by mother’s “boyfriend”.

Would you want to work under those conditions if you had a brain and a chance to do better?

You really want to know something sad? Way back when, when I was testing to be a cop, I wanted to be a homicide detective.
I thank God every day it didn’t happen. The kids, I don’t think I could have handled the kids being murdered.
