024 is slim too. Many clouted jumped ship b4 summer. Get your calls in.
Do they still do magic with the sheets? About 30 years ago we worked a very busy district in an area. So then you were only allowed two POs on the desk and two in each of the lockups. There was no way two people could run the desk or lockups due to the volume of prisoners that had to be processed for bond and court, besides all the walk-ins and line-ups for the dets. So to gather manpower you had to be creative on the sheets. So for the line-up where you had to man all the cars and certain foot posts, that the aldermen wanted, the the desk person would appear on a two man car or footpost but after the line-up was called in they were reassigned. So you had to lie to make the place function because headquarters never supplied enough people to man the district. I remember the inspectors would come in and see all the people working the desk and they knew what was going on. They would then ask you how many are working the desk and you say two even though they saw four or five. As long as you said two everything was fine. They knew you were kiting people all around to make it work.
This is the sheet for Easter Sunday. I’m sure a lot of officers requested the day off. I’ve worked many holidays with little man power so officers can be home with their family. What does the sheets look like for non holiday?
Pretty soon the citizens in those north side districts will have to hire private security or have citizen patrols. The other problem is the size of the beats, more area to cover than on the south or west sides. I remember 016 had a beat that went from 7600 N to 5600 N. Not good when you need help and help may be 20 or 30 blocks away. The beat sizes are determined by calls for service. They also need to figure in distance. Can you imagine if fire apparatus had to go these distances. CFD has 98 stations spread out evenly throughout the city and not the bulk being in certain areas. Imagine if they pulled their manpower from 016, 017, et. al and placed it in certain areas like the police.
I would LOVE to go to 017. I don’t care how weird that 3rd watch supposedly is. With that goof SGT with the gray hair and beady eyed glasses. Anything to get me off this zone 10 radio and all its bullshit.
Now that is definitely the definition of a " skeleton crew ". Bad wreck, bad fire, shooting, big shitkicker hillbilly fight at banjo practice, equals disaster.
Then again, let’s not forget sat, gang, gun and god knows what other citywide units are in 007.

3rd watch sheets in 11 doesn’t say anything. They won’t show 2nd watch work OT, Tact, Mission Cars, Robbery cars, gang teams, saturation teams, narcotics, and who knows what other secret squirrel teams.
005 is in the same bot as 017. Most of the time there’s only 2 supervisors on the street and only 3 cars per sector. Such a poorly run district. How about some PPO’s start getting assigned there instead of sending them all to 007, 001 and 018?

017 has been struggling with severe manpower shortages for many years. It’s the forgotten district. Possibly the lowest staffed in the city
Look at the total number of officers assigned to 17. Holiday or not, the number of officers assigned to the district are down from the past.
In the early 80s on Easter Sunday all the gangbangers would converge in the loop wearing there "colors" particularly to the movie theaters like the United Artists, Oriental, State Lake, Woods all playing the karate and black exploitation movies. Many fights, a few window smashing, battery of touristas etc. Mayor Jane Burne, the only Chicago mayor with balls, ordered all of the three Gang Crime Units to the loop with the simple order of "Show them our colors".
A lot of arrests, a few CRs and a few gangsters wearing white bandages around their heads and the Easter morning problem was solved. The arrestees were all charged and no I-bonds were given. Problem solved.

So, the neighborhoods that pay the majority of the property taxes and milk the least money from the system are the least protected?

Call the pension board or the FOP to determine the number of sworn personnel They know or check CLEAR. It’s no secret. There’s more sworn officers, they just aren’t on the street or in the districts
With 2nd watch, a lot of people are kept inside that could of been used on a beat car. Like caps having more people than needed....
Difficult to compare apples to apples without knowing more details. What's the population of the district? Is is a ghetto district, or is it nice? How many typically work per shift, since you're saying this is low for them?
I know suburban guys who run 8 single cars per shift as their minimums, which includes supervisors. They're in a ghetto town of 35,000.

It may be a holiday sheet, but it's shamefully short. The commander, the captain and most lieutenants don't dare to speak up... they don't want to get yelled at by a deputy or a chief!
The alderman have been ineffective and useless in getting more manpower to 017! Unsafe!!!

017 was a fun place to work in the 80's… anybody remember Eli Blumenthal?
017 has less than 170 PO's assigned to the district. In the early 2000's, we had over 300. Now, shush about, It's Easter! Show us the real sheets! They're short all the time, every day. Even on Mondays and Tuesdays that aren't Holidays.
Those are what the sheets look like on every saturday and sunday in 017. Been that way for years. Waller and nagode don't care. 016/017 have been short for the past decade.

I always get a kick out of these entitled suddenly elitist supervisors that observe the violation, make the stop, and then call someone else over to take enforcement action and testify. It makes the department look silly in court when you have to explain that the supervisor is above writing a ticket and testifying. Is there a G.O. that states supervisors can no longer write tickets? The individual witnessing the violation is supposed to write it. Case dismissed.

Just make sure you tell the truth in the reports if he does this to you. Start out by saying “you are only relating what was told to you by Sgt. #1234 and that you did not witness any of the events leading up to the arrest.” There’s nothing wrong with saying you were ordered if you were. You may get dumped but it’s better than getting rule 14, suspended, sued or worse. Protect yourself because when things go south you will be alone.

Retiree, who had a Sgt make a nickel bag pinch. Called me over and I was happy to help. Did the processing and asked Sgt what court date HE wanted. Was shocked, then I handed him the inventory pouch and explained to him HE had to hand deliver the marijuana so as not to break the chain of evidence. Those days arresting officer had to hand carry evidence to ERPS or crime lab.
Never had him call me again
