We don't recall going to Spring Break until well into college. These weren't college kids wilding downtown. These were juveniles, none of which should have any expectation of going to Spring Break for a few years yet.

The notion that there is something inherently wrong with young people wanting to hang out in the city is absurd. But what happens to these African-American kids once they get here is shameful. Actually a great plan. That job fair should scare them away.
How about a fourth option? Instead of catch-and-release or any of the other options, why not arrest and incarcerate them until the end of Summer?
Back in the end of the last century, my parents had their own summer job fair for their children:
Sweep the stairs and wash them.
Cut the grass and water the lawn.
Wash the car and vacuum the inside.
Water the indoor plants.
Clean your bedroom and straighten out your closet, dresser and chest.
Read something now that will be needed next school year.
See if grandma needs help with any of the above type tasks.

Once again, why is this not the parents responsibility to ensure that their teenage children have something productive to do over spring break and the upcoming summer? Beginning the age of 13, my dad found us jobs for the summer. Be it cutting lawns, bagging groceries, working summer camps, washing cars, etc. Responsibilities were given to us, and there were consequences if we fkd up. Our parents even made us clean the damn park several times a year - that we rarely played in! And now, the majority of us do the exact same thing with our children. Keep the kids busy with responsibilities and enforce consequences if rules are not followed.
Perhaps Mayor Lightfoot can sponsor parenting classes for these folks and have the teenagers clean the parks and paint fences or cut lawns of the elderly in their neighborhoods. You know, something productive.
Let them have at it. Don’t respond at all. Tell Lori and the black caucus to handle it. Operation PUSH should be there too.

I am Mexican. When I was growing up we were very poor. My parents had very little money so we never had the opportunity to go to places like Florida. Ever. My first trip to Orlando was as an adult taking my kid to Disney. How’ever, my parents still did what they could to entertain and spend time with us. We once went to Wisconsin Dells and stayed overnight in a motel with a pool and one slide. That’s was so much fun for us. Mostly though we hung out with the other neighbor hood kids and played games in the park. We were happy and we were well adjusted even though we were very poor. As teenager I got my first job as a busyboy at a local restaurant. I was 16. It didn’t pay much but I saved my money. Bought my first used car and had money to go to the movies and the mall. I never at that age was ever bored to the point where I though it would be fun to run in large packs and fight in large groups. And i never needed anyone to get me a job. I did it all myself by going to different places and asking if they needed help. I did all this not because I was privileged. Clearly I was not. I was able to do this because I had good parents who taught me right from wrong. They taught me how to work for what I wanted. They gave a shit about me. I could never see kids who insist on having new 200 dollar Jordan’s every month and wearing very expensive True Religion jeans ever to understanding what the hell im taking about because fucking asshole adults keep hammering in their brains that life owes them something for nothing. That the system has failed them. Thats it’s not their fault. That’s it’s racism.
The implication that Light-in-the-loafers and Glanton make is that African American youth don't have the self discipline and self control to be able to make positive decisions with their free time that are moral and lawful. Hence, Big Government must supply events and opportunities in order to divert their attention away from making immoral and impulsive decisions.

The implication that the majority of White high school youths go to Florida for Spring Break is Absurd and Racist! Dalheen is correct, but the definition of fun varies by skin tone. My kids used to go downtown on the train and hang out. They had a Ventra Card and 5 dollars. Sad truth is that many of these wilding kids have NO responsible adult at home, to provide positive parental guidance and discipline, to motivate kid to do well in school and stay out of trouble, to lead by example. Some of these parents are quite aware the kids steal while downtown, and don't care, knowing there's no genuine repercussion, and perhaps even encourage the thievery, because it's "something for nothing" mentality. Sad truth is that politicians and black community leaders are unwilling to say this, to address this fundamental deficiency in parenting responsibility. Democrats expect government to assume that role, which it does, inevitably badly. This isn't new issue. Low-income dysfunctional families don't function very well, even if these parents "love their kids". Worthy book to read: "The Promised Land: The Great Black Migration and How it Changed America" by Nichola Leman, well-written, set largely in Chicago, discussing in detail the socio-economic problems of low-income black families that lead to this sort of irresponsible behavior, criminality, and yes, "youth wildings". Until politicians can honestly flag problem AT HOME, to hold these kids' parents accountable, to dole out genuine punishments for petty theft and "beating-ups", we'll keep seeing the same Facebook summons for "evening of wildings on Mag Mile and State St".

Why do they have to have a spring break? Why is there summer vacation? It’s for the over worked, under paid, too qualified teachers.
Give me a break! If the teachers were working in a private sector corporation, they would have to be related to the owners to keep their jobs, creating a defective, useless nonproductive product. Why not have all students go to school year round? Give them earned vacation just like in the real world. Get them used to a schedule that is like having a job. There would be plenty of time to learn lost skills like manors and being tolerant with the people that give them everything they get for free, from the cradle to the grave!

A job fair is a great idea.
I don't remember anyone from my school going on a spring break vacation. Any vacations were during summer or Christmas break and were short, with the family and the destination was visiting other family outside of the region.
What did we do during summer break? Played/hung out with friends in our neighborhood, helped with extra chores around the house, volunteered to help at church/with shut-ins/elderly and worked at a job (part time 10 years old, full time at 14). In the spring we "pounded the pavement"- going business to business filling out applications, handing in resumes and interviewing. Apprenticeship was one goal and unpaid was not uncommon.
The problem isn't that black kids want to come downtown and hang out.
The problem is that many of these kids want to come downtown to steal, rob, damage, destroy, fight, disturb, etc

When I was in high school I worked at a frame factory, a deli, a gas station and a pizzeria. You think any of these places would hire a young inner city kid when they can just hire an illegal who will do a better job and be more reliable? I live in a little neighborhood that is going through a building boom with dozens of Central Americans working on each block building new houses. Then you go over to the train station and there’s a few dozen abled bodied AA men hanging out all day long. Why is it taboo to suggest we kick out the illegals and give the work to the unemployed men of this very neighborhood?

Civil society and this city need to figure out how to best educate our youth on the unwritten contract people have with each other in which we follow rules and laws in order to peacefully co-exist. The issue is complicated and most solutions that are being talked about by the politicians and the cultural elite are oversimplifications. During my career as the police I've felt many times as a social gap filler while resolving disputes that are minor in nature but overwhelming to others to deal with (e.g. he/she took my keys, he/she took my phone)Someone is not fulfilling their end of the social contract and hence the gap. My personal answer to this inequity is parenting. Parents are children's first role models and when parents fail in this role the child and society as a whole are detrimentally affected. I was disappointed, to say the least, when I did not once hear the mayor elect mention parents as a potential answer or the columnist do the same in her piece. Hopefully, before the year 2100, someone will have figured out that it takes a lot to become a positive contributor to society but a big part of it begins with parenting and personal responsibility for ones actions.

Hey Dahleen, how many are going to hire over the summer? Some can work at your office sort of like an internship. Maybe you can have some come over to your house and mow the lawn or some light yard work. You can pay them a decent hourly rate or better yet ask your bosses at the tribune if they will hire a bunch for summer jobs? Even better convince your bosses to have these youth come over to their houses and do some landscaping or pool cleaning. I'm sure there is a lot of work that needs to be done on their suburban lots especially after the winter we had.

I NEVER went on Spring break - not even in college. Worked hard by taking extra hours at the part time job so I could have money for books. Why is it assumed that white people are rich or that we get our money for doing nothing, and hence, why we should give it to assholes who don’t want to work hard? Each of these punks needs to be arrested when stealing - they will never know better if there are no consequences. Their parents (if around) sure did not teach them right from wrong.
I find it fascinating that the powers that be still think crime is a product of not having enough activities. That it’s a product of boredom. I thought we’ve been through this flawed line of thinking. “The kids need more after school activities” unfortunately the kids that will attend these activities, job fairs, and pro social events, are not the ones we have a problem with. There’s no amount of activities you can provide to solve this problem, because it’s not a problem of unfilled time. But, Lightgroot and all the other movers and shakers in this city and country will continue to invent different reasons as to why dookie blew someone’s head off at 15yo to take a 2016 Hyundai. I am Mexican. When I was growing up we were very poor. My parents had very little money so we never had the opportunity to go to places like Florida. Ever. My first trip to Orlando was as an adult taking my kid to Disney. How’ever, my parents still did what they could to entertain and spend time with us. We once went to Wisconsin Dells and stayed overnight in a motel with a pool and one slide. That’s was so much fun for us. Mostly though we hung out with the other neighbor hood kids and played games in the park. We were happy and we were well adjusted even though we were very poor. As teenager I got my first job as a busyboy at a local restaurant. I was 16. It didn’t pay much but I saved my money. Bought my first used car and had money to go to the movies and the mall. I never at that age was ever bored to the point where I though it would be fun to run in large packs and fight in large groups. And i never needed anyone to get me a job. I did it all myself by going to different places and asking if they needed help. I did all this not because I was privileged. Clearly I was not. I was able to do this because I had good parents who taught me right from wrong. They taught me how to work for what I wanted. They gave a shit about me. I could never see kids who insist on having new 200 dollar Jordan’s every month and wearing very expensive True Religion jeans ever to understanding what the hell im taking about because fucking asshole adults keep hammering in their brains that life owes them something for nothing. Jesus Christ , sounds like we grew up in the same household. We NEVER went anywhere for spring break and I didn’t even know other people did. We camped in Wisconsin once .... I also had my first job at 16 and my mom gave me $500 towards my 1st car that was $850. I went to community college and worked bullshit jobs until I was old enough to get on the job.
That had to be the most ridiculous article I've read all year. The special kids must be entertained at all times or else. How could a grown person write such tripe. They will be replaced by the next generation of illegals, the legal ones, and when their block comes to power the Community will be just as well treated as they are in all Latin countries. Mom worked. Dad was a teacher and was off the same week I was. It was the week for projects around the house, cleaning the yard for summer, hand washing the car one afternoon.
Wilding downtown with facebook 'friends' wasn't on the list. I was lucky to get one day or maybe a half-day to myself, to ride bikes down to the lake for a chilly afternoon at the beach.
