Info for Retirees

From the comments:
  • OT for retirees...Pension board sent out signature forms which must be notarized and returned by 30 June...12 days, hope none of the people in Arizona or Vegas went on a road trip this week...
Is this a regular thing, Proof of Life?

If you take a picture of yourself holding up the daily newspaper will that satisfy the Pension Board?

Is there some scandal brewing about Indicted Johnson collecting and cashing dead coppers pension checks? We're hearing the Pension Board was inundated with calls regarding their completely unreasonable deadline considering that it's summer travel season, especially for retirees who don't have to return to the job.

Well, you can almost guarantee there’s some scamming or theft going on. This is Chicago. Probably some connected people again. If anyone steals from the pension they should be prosecuted. Unfortunately the “legal” theft has hurt the pension with the gold braid friends promoting friends pension grab. Lt should be the highest pension one can receive. It’s the last testable rank. After that it’s all who you know.

Leave it to Johnson to cash "dead money."
Dude, you need 3 squares and a cot, like for life.
Low life scum causes trouble for everybody.
On another note, the local Democratic Machine
actually has a non-threatening flowerly title that
pays big money with no indication relative to the
actual job duties: checking on the dead to make
sure they stay dead and vote on Election Day.

This is a completely normal procedure that many employers use. I had a PI company that was contracted by the city to do these checks in-person. We made an appointment with the benefit recipient so that it worked with their schedule, and they showed ID and signed a form which we witnessed and notarized. It’s not something to get all pissed about. I’m sure it is more cost-effective to mail the form to the retiree and have them return it - although not as fool-proof. And yes, it’s to stop fraudulent benefits collections. No one should have a problem with that. I’m sure that those on vacations won’t see their benefits stop if they miss the deadline. They should give you more time. I’m sure those who have moved have sense enough to have their mail forwarded.

If they are going to send these by mail, what they should do is have a PDF online that can be filled/printed and then notarized and mailed.

For everyone crying about how you “shouldn’t have to do this”, you’re right. But scumbags like some in your ranks shouldn’t have been cashing deceased mother’s checks either. Thank the rotten ones for putting this on everyone. And the pension is so underfunded, that protecting what money remains should be high priority for those who stand to collect from it.

This is for the hospitalization subsidy they were supposed to be paying but weren't. $55 a month for non-Medicare and $21 for Medicare. The court ordered it and they are going to pay it on the August check. If you had hospitalization taken out of your pension check you don't need to file the form.

Just called the Pension Board. If there is no answer to the first letter, another will be sent out in the middle of July. I do live in Arizona and leaving friday for 3 weeks in the mountains. Not a big deal. Been retired 12 years and if I have any memory left, this will be the second time they have done this. Obviously, someone was caught or suspected of chicanery.

Calm down and relax. The pension board isn’t going to stop your check immediately. The date was probably set so the retirees would get it done and no set it down and forget about it. OT. This morning, Wednesday-19 June 2019, the FBI raided the 34th Ward office of Alderperson Carrie Austin, located at 111th & Normal.

They removed computers and multiple boxes presumably containing paper files.

Alderperson Carrie Austin is currently the longest serving African-American on the city council. She was appointed in 1994 by Richard M. Daley to fill the seat vacated by her recently deceased husband, Lemuel.

Austin was a Preckwinkle supporter, but she appeared on stage with Mayor Lori Lightfoot earlier this morning, prior to the raid, at Percy Julian High School to announce a summer youth initiative.

I’m not sure why everyone is so upset over them attempting to confirm the annuitant is actually still living. Maybe they could have given everyone longer to return the forms but it’s a good idea. My friend who use to work for the Municipal Pension Fund said it is not uncommon for family members to continue receiving the annuitants checks for long periods of time and they rarely ever prosecute and attempt to recover the money but usually are unsuccessful. They are not going to advertise how often it happens it would expose their incompetence.

My husband receives a pension from the Teamsters and he has to complete such a form twice a year, although he just has to include a copy of his DL, no need to get form notarized. If you don't want to wait for the mail, just go to the Chicago Police Pension Fund website and print out the form - middle column, the blue Affidavit Letter link. That's what I will do, since I am many, many miles away.

This is because retirees die on occasion and the money keeps being direct deposited in many cases until they find out the beneficiary is deceased. They probably should have given people longer but I would rather have money go to the right people late than the wrong people ever. Lots of social justice warriors up here, but they don't get NETFLIX, like we do), Anyways, like I initially said, I've been dead for five years and my old lady, with her gambling jones, was NEVER gonna make it on the 50%, so each time the pension board questions my existence, she tells them that I'm functionally illiterate and invites them to come to the house. Then she tells them that I'm having an "episode" and refuses to let them into the house. BUT, she has a card-board cut-out of Michael Jordan that she rigs up to a rotating turntable and it moves back and forth. She convinces them that that is actually me, walking around the living room. Devious little bitch that she is. Don't know why I ever married her. I'm guessing, that's why all the rest of you guys are now going through this nonsense. Don't worry. Once you get here, it's MUCH, MUCH better. We all get to vote on who gets in! Ruth Bader Ginsberg is next up on the list. So far it is 85% to 15% NO!

6/19/2019 10:34:00 AM

Hey asshole you’re missing the point. We’re not say the verification is wrong we’re saying “12 days by US Mail” is insufficient time to respond. Pay attention!

Tell you what, Konet is a good guy but here are a few points. If you don’t live in Chicago it is not a buck to get something notarized. As usual the Pension Board has to start a panic as there is nobody in charge there. Don’t forget the city fucked all of us out of medical insurance. This may be the procedure with other pensions but it isn’t with ours. Again I don’t need a Captain to tell me what to do, most retirees are officers and don’t have that pension and Sox job.

You'd think people were being asked to walk 50 miles, build a skyscraper using only their toes, and answer 5 $1000 questions from Jeopardy. Go to your bank, sign your name, drop in mailbox. Ain't that fuckin hard. These are probably the same people that would dog jobs when they were working.
And yes, a few years ago there was a news article on all the spouses of dead city workers who continued cashing the pension checks.
Take 10 minutes out of your day, then go back to watching Judge Judy.
You should see the conspiracy theories on the Retired FB group. Some people who are retired see black helicopters following them for some unknown reasons. Another post is about what color envelopes you got to send this form back, pink or blue, and why?

Downstate retired officer, We have to complete a similar form every year, have it notarized and return it to the pension board. Seems like a reasonable precaution against fraud.

Don't have a problem with the notarized affidavit......have a real problem with the threat of cutting off benefits in 12 days, along with it being required to be returned in only 12 days......wtf......

I agree.
It is the insult of being treated like child pisses me off.
Do this in 12 days or no food for you.
It is an empty threat, so why make it?

They do this every 5 or 10 years. I bet they find a few still collecting money from the grave. Probably voting too.

I have no problem complying but it’s asinine that you sit waiting for the efficient us mail to deliver the form. In this day and age you should be able to download the form. The moron that says just download the form, once again demonstrates the ignorance of someone that doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

The Fund has recently experienced a failure of several members and/or their families to notify the Fund upon the death of a member, and as a result benefits were allowed to continue.

6/19/2019 07:30:00 PM

I wouldn’t do that. Had an acquaintance who had that same attitude. What are they going to do to me, I was a boss on the CPD. Ignored 2 or 3 follow up notices. He showed them. Then one month he ran down there like a little baby. They stopped his check. He really showed them

Don’t understand all the anger towards the Pension Fund an Board The “go fuck yourselves” and other comments. I find it hard to believe the board just decided to do this to the retirees just to mess and inconvenience them. For whatever reason it must have been required by pension law or had something to do with fraud on the fund and that a notarized signature was required to prove the case. Can’t see the board putting the additional burden of the letters and follow up on the the retirees and pension staff for no reason and if it was not necessary
Enjoy your retirement and don’t let a simple bs thing bother you

Start a panic by sending out a simple letter? Are you for real? You might have panicked, imagine 90% signed the letter and returned it without giving it a second thought. I can’t imagine a retired officer panicking because he or she is asked to sign a letter and get it notarized

To 6/19/2019 09:52:00pm. Totally agree with you on sending FEDEX. May cost a little bit more, but item is delivered and can be tracked.
Went this route after Post Office lost my certified return receipt card that I had paid for, then when I went to question where card was (had to go back three times) they handed me some copy of a receipt anyone could of scribbled their name on it (as this is what signature looked like) claiming original card could of been DROPPED! Yeah right!
