How Many Bankruptcies?
- Ald. Carrie Austin and her six children and stepchildren have declared bankruptcy 14 times, often while they were holding down government jobs, largely at City Hall, records examined by the Chicago Sun-Times show.
The bankruptcy petitions filed by Austin — the longtime 34th Ward alderman who’s come under scrutiny by a federal grand jury — and by her family over the past two decades have sought to get them out from under debts including federal taxes, court fees, highway tolls and city of Chicago parking fines.
One daughter has filed for bankruptcy court protection five times. One of her sons has four cases.
Does she get partial credit for each pension fund that goes belly up...along with Chicago itself?

So Carrie Austin chaired the Budget Committee on the City Council. What a joke. Multiple bankruptcy filings for her and her family. Well at least we know that poverty was not the cause of her and family’s financial woes since they all were on the city payroll. Just runnin’ a con, Miss Carrie.
Is this one of the people that sets the budgets and priorities of the City of Chicago?

You guys don't understand how bankruptcy filings work: The family filed a total of 14 bankruptcies. If they get up to 20 then they can get two filings free!
This is like the coffee house loyalty program, buy ten cups of coffee and get the card punched each time and the 11th cup is free. No difference there.

I'll bet anyone $5 that despite the 14 bankruptcies (thus far) the Austin family still gets junk mail telling that they are all preapproved to get a new credit card with a special into APR for 12 months and bonus points at sign up etc. No one would take that bet since we all know is it true. They get such offers.

To be fair, I had to resort to the most embarrassing decision of my life, and file for chapter 7 to relieve myself from some serious medical bills from treatment for a serious disease and the credit card debt that mounted from the loss of work and my wife’s inability to work while I was receiving treatment. Someone had to be home with our young kids and for me at the times I was so weak and useless from treatment.
The things I learned during the process made me sick. First and foremost the scrutiny I got from the court and the trustee were uncalled for. My attorneys assumption was that it was because I had a good city job that I had been able to go back to and most importantly the color of my skin. Austin’s family walks in and out Scott free multiple times. I used the law once to get myself out from under a pile id never get away from for decades if ever and keep my tiny house and 9 year old car. Not because I’m greedy, but because my small kids dont deserve to be tossed out of their good public school and into some shithole section 8 apartment over my Illness.
Lastly, you can only petition the court for a discharge once every 7 years. That means that her most useless son, the namesake of her late husband and Saids father has done just that, filed every 7 years. Typical GST.
I never thought I’d have to. I’m glad I did, and I never....ever want to do it again.

WOW I thought the dept frowned upon and watched you more closely after you filed bankruptcy because they deemed it as less credible behaviors making one more suspectable to engage in criminal behavior.

Years ago I was working in Austin’s ward and had to escort the repo man to grab the aldermen sons car!
And he worked for city. Give me a break, he was a deputy commissioner.
I have seen the CPD do credit checks on future employees and recruits.
I have seen them stop hiring relatives of officers and say they did not pass background investigations
But the city does nothing and allows the entire family to work for city departments
Then allows them to bring discredit on city multiple times just to get out of paying for the obligations on car and credit loans.
Or just not pay court ordered child support.

Years ago I watched a officer go thru bankruptcy.
They took his car and had to sell his home. All due to bad investments. Only after 6 years on job.
He went back to credit union and asked for a car loan and was denied.
But he was not a relative of the Austin family?

There’s a reason insurance companies use risk factor ratios to determine rates.

BK can be used as a financial tool. Use of Chapter 7 or 13 was not mentioned. Chapter 13 is a nifty little tool one can use to keep property and lower taxes. However you DO have to pay for them. It seems someone in the family is or is married to a bankruptcy attorney. Doing what they are doing so many times is chingles $$$. And creditors look at Chapter 13 differently. They do get their money back on secured loans. And the 3 years between filings they can rape you on interest. Seems a hard way to make a $ but really common. Ever have time, talk to a accountant whi understands bankruptcy and get your eyes opened. And it varies by states. Here in Texas I am surprised anyone loans money to anyone. There are so many ways to hang it to creditors.
Kudos to the Sun Times on this one. They dug hard and deep. Good job. If only more of this kind of reporting was done on our so-called leaders.

As a member of the Chicago City Council, she serves on six committees: Budget and Government operations; Energy, Environmental Protection and Public Utilities; Finance; Health; Housing and Real Estate; and Zoning.
