The schedule change is a done deal. All that's left are the details to be hammered out on paper:
- A controversial plan to change the starting times for Chicago police officers across the city will take effect in January over the objections of the Fraternal Order of Police, Mayor Lori Lightfoot and First Deputy Police Supt. Anthony Ricco said Tuesday.
“This isn’t the sign of the Apocalypse. Everything will be fine,” the mayor said after her weekly “Accountability Tuesday” meeting with police brass that went on without Supt. Eddie Johnson, who just returned from a vacation in London.
“This is something that’s really consistent [with] and maybe mandated by the consent decree.…We got a little ahead of ourselves….The union absolutely has to be read into it. And we’ll give people time to adjust their schedules accordingly. It’s gonna be part of a pilot program that is launched in January.”
Riccio said the scheduling change was announced last week, then temporarily pulled back because the FOP was not notified in advance.
Special Fred was no where to be seen during this presser. Interesting. Someone talked some sense into the brass:
- Although the union is up in arms, Riccio characterized the time changes as “minimal.” It’s not enough to disrupt the personal lives of officers whose days off have already been canceled throughout the summer.
“I believe it’s 30 minutes that the shifts will change in time, so it’s not a big time change. It’s nothing dramatic,” Riccio said.
“I understand that that could cause some child care issues. Some issues at home. But the change in time is very minimal. And…not rolling it out between now and January gives everybody time to plan for….child care issues are or anything they have going on at home.”
Which is what should have been done in the first place instead of alienating the men and women working the actual new hours. Riccio's never had a bad spot in his career and certainly not one that required him to show up anywhere on time. Neither has anyone working for him. Which is fine - the is Chicago after all.
But don't pretend to care now. It's insulting our intelligence and the intelligence of all the men and women of the CPD.

New cameras for the ET's sat in storage for so long the warranty is expired. They are all down and not getting repaired since there's no funds. Old cameras back in use but there aren't enough memory cards or old out dated batteries. So about all they can do is pick up rape kits & process burglaries. This happened years ago with the old cameras and you would hear ET's on the radio not being able to take jobs because they did not have a camera. Yet the exact same people are still in charge of the unit! The place is long overdue for an overhaul!!!!

As a C/O years back the Sheriff started to strictly enforce dress code violations at the jail even though he walked around looking like a bum with a ripped Mt. Carmel pullover. The next month was the highest absenteeism ever costing over 250k in ot. If Lightfoot like Dart wants to pick petty wars with the employees, there is more than a few ways to fight back.

It's a minimal change if you work days. Only one roll call is affected. Same for afternoons. Midnights, however, gets the hour change on the early side and thirty minutes for the late side. Also, thank god that all the inside dollies and house mice don't have to have their lives uprooted.

So, what will be the schedule of the gold stars? Oh, that’s right, while everyone else will struggle to find new solutions for child care, the gold stars will not have their schedules changed. And what if there are no solutions for a change in child care schedules for that small percentage of officers? What happens then? When both spouses work and the officer can’t change his/her schedules, is the non-police spouse suppose to tell their employer that they can’t work X hours because their spouse is the police? See how that plays out! And what of the sitter who provides care, now their schedules are going to be impacted and inconvenienced. The Department and City thinks that child care is just going to drop out of the sky for married couples who both work, and especially for married couples who are on the job. The Department and City don’t understand how hard it is to find qualified child care that fit the schedules of the officers and working spouse. There will be a percentage of lucky officers who have family members to fall back on. The rest will have to “go fish”. The Department and City don’t care as long as the Consent Degree is fulfilled.

- rotated every period
- had stand-up roll call everyday
- had weapon inspection every Wednesday without exception
- had to call the desk in the morning to see if our felony arrest cleared for court - and if so, go to the bond/prelim hearing - even if we worked til 0200
- had no automation to expedite report writing, arrest processing etc. (90% of today’s CPD doesn’t know what a paper arrest report or inventory book even look like). Raid Book? What’s THAT? Call OCD to get your vice RD # and narcotic street values??!!! Whhhhaaaaaattttt????
Oh yeah...
Those of us with families and kids managed just fine. We dragged our asses out of bed on little/no sleep and handled business. We made arrangements with family, friends and neighbors to take and pick up kids from school and let the dog out to piss.
Couldn’t get CU for juniors big game? Try again with a PDay. Still no luck? Ask to work a late or power car. Still no luck? Oh well, suck it up and do what you have to until you have the seniority. Hell, my family would oftentimes adjust holiday dinner times to accommodate ME. 1500 start? We had Thanksgiving dinner at noon.
You’ll you get no sympathy from me for a half hour or hour start time change. If you can’t figure out how to adjust to something so inconsequential, you don’t belong on this job.
There’s gonna be a lot of crying come the first of the year when snowflakes learn exactly how much weight seniority holds. Because something tells me gone are the days of throwing a couple packs of smokes or a half dog into the watch secretaries drawer for “consideration”.

So this a$$hole is a high up exempt member (first deputy Police supt) and while addressing a schedule change that was supposedly already approved by them, doesn't know the actual schedule?????? BELIEVES???? That is the kind of bullshit people say when they are lying but they still want an out in case they get caught doing it. At this point an exempt should not "believe", he should KNOW. They are trying to do damage control and minimize the impact it has on officers. Why not tell the truth? It is an hour change for early cars and a half hour for late cars. This time change also puts these cars in heavy rush hour traffic further impacting their days and making it impossible to pick up or drop off kids from schools.
The members should have been asked for input and the fop should have been consulted. There are many other possibilities that could have been explored in order to improve manpower on the streets (10 or 12 hour days, 10 hour days for certain watches etc.) But this shows a complete disregard for any of the "backbone" of the department.
And BTW, if you are a midnight late car with court in the morning, make sure you adjust your overtime slip. It should include that hour between 0800 and 0900 (when court starts). They expect you there 10 minutes prior to 0900. That means they have to pay you for that hour in between your shift and court.

I blame the citizenry who voted for Rahm, who brought in Mc Carthy who started the destruction of the CPD, I blame Rahm for bringing in Lightfoot into our city who will place the last nail in the CPD coffin. Business as usual will be for the department upper echelon. Just like Special Ed's recent end of summer vacation. Now you will need to be a Merit-Cloutorious just to get a summer furlo pick. If you have under 10 years on, you wont care. Only officers of higher seniority will be affected. I see Another reason to cheat on the promotion exams.
My first day at the academy, they talked about holding on to our integrity, honor, and sense of duty. Ha! Where's the payoff on that one? All I see from our leadership is "Do as I say. Not as I do"

Anyone with over 26 yrs on the job did this before permanent shifts came into place.
Reading the above comment about dress code in the jail. It was always hypocritical in my opinion for the sheriff to be unshaven in casual street clothes demading his staff to follow the Go's to a tee. But knowing the sheriff as a rich entitled kid didn't surprise he was above the rules. Remember when he lost to Judy baar topinka and thought the 19th Ward didn't help him enough. He ran around like a petulant child blaming the Hynes Family. Skinny Sheehan felt sorry for him and gave him a job. Why he was ever chosen to be Sheriff was baffling to me.

The city and most of the department brass, has been insulting the intelligence of the members of the departments for more then a generation. They do not care about you and most likely, never will. Just look how long it took to improve training, get you decent station houses to work in ( now they have bad construction), bad vehicles ( still not improving), a fixed and rigged internal investigation system, a fixed and rigged promotion system and unit assignment system, I could go on but my head hurts thinking about it.

I am from your era and you are 100% correct in everything you say. Those times were much worse then today's job experience in so many ways. Recall losing all of your built up comp time ( no money back then) at the end of the year or when you came back from furlough and furlough was only 15 working days.Hot and broken down cars and station house. Yes, things were not good. But, that is no reason for the department to make such changes now. Things should be getting better, times change and there is a union now.

Unit 277 is a complete joke of a unit. Sgt’s are scared of there own shadow from loosing there spot so they won’t speak up for the troops. Nothing is gonna change same ole same ole. They have 20 or so new cameras is the back that are waiting for a ghost class that’s suppose to happen in the future. Which won’t happen with the hiring freeze. Makes total sense let’s keep the new cameras in storage to collect dust. Meanwhile HK is still exempt from swiping, wobbling around the 3rd floor halls on OT.
At the end of the day all of this bitching and moaning isn't going to stop what's already going to happen. If the FOP hasn't done more than send out their little letters, then that's all they're going to do for us union paying members. At this point I only care about this new contract. Like Jerry Maguire "show me the money". If the greedy CTU can turn down a 16% raise over 5 yrs and still give a go ahead on a strike, then sky's the limit right?

New cameras for the ET's sat in storage for so long the warranty is expired. They are all down and not getting repaired since there's no funds. Old cameras back in use but there aren't enough memory cards or old out dated batteries. So about all they can do is pick up rape kits & process burglaries. This happened years ago with the old cameras and you would hear ET's on the radio not being able to take jobs because they did not have a camera. Yet the exact same people are still in charge of the unit! The place is long overdue for an overhaul!!!!

It's a minimal change if you work days. Only one roll call is affected. Same for afternoons. Midnights, however, gets the hour change on the early side and thirty minutes for the late side. Also, thank god that all the inside dollies and house mice don't have to have their lives uprooted.

It sounds like you have been issued a camera. The ET's requested that but were told no so they are dragged in and out of the cars after each shift being used by different people each day. Our equipment is also so outdated they don't even sell batteries for the cameras & flashes

This NBA backlash is just the tip of the iceberg of doing business with these people. Now maybe you might want to rethink that communist tendency in current US candidates. HQ is working on no 6-9th period furloughs. They saying man power because of the no hiring. They did it before for NATO for 5th period furloughs. And won the grievance. Just gonna expand it and stick it to you harder.
1st watch start times at 2100 & 2200
2nd watch start times at 0500 & 0600
3rd watch start times at 1300 & 1400
2nd watch handles the students arriving at school and 3rd watch can handle dismissal. Everybody with kids on 3rd watch and 1st watch can handle at least part of getting or picking up kids from school. The bosses can't argue with this.
Start taking care of yourselves and your families while all the changes take place. This time next year there will be a new Supt. in place along with many changes to the command staff.

Well said. I was considering running for FOP but there are so many entitled asshats on the job. Benefits need to be taken away in order for us to stick together like the old timers who got our benefits did.
So the CTU is now demanding affordable housing in their contract. For them, for their students, and for other staff. They want CPS to help them buy houses. Well they are by paying you a salary. Save up, buy a condo or something small in an area you can afford. Fix it up, sell it, and buy something better. Repeat. Thats how it's done. Their contract is not the place for public policy.
And they're misleading the public by saying police officers and fire fighters get housing subsidies. Thats a bald faced lie.

When I came on the job we:
- rotated every period
- had stand-up roll call everyday
- had weapon inspection every Wednesday without exception
- had to call the desk in the morning to see if our felony arrest cleared for court - and if so, go to the bond/prelim hearing - even if we worked til 0200
- had no automation to expedite report writing, arrest processing etc. (90% of today’s CPD doesn’t know what a paper arrest report or inventory book even look like). Raid Book? What’s THAT? Call OCD to get your vice RD # and narcotic street values??!!! Whhhhaaaaaattttt????
Oh yeah...
Those of us with families and kids managed just fine. We dragged our asses out of bed on little/no sleep and handled business. We made arrangements with family, friends and neighbors to take and pick up kids from school and let the dog out to piss.
Couldn’t get CU for juniors big game? Try again with a PDay. Still no luck? Ask to work a late or power car. Still no luck? Oh well, suck it up and do what you have to until you have the seniority. Hell, my family would oftentimes adjust holiday dinner times to accommodate ME. 1500 start? We had Thanksgiving dinner at noon.
You’ll you get no sympathy from me for a half hour or hour start time change. If you can’t figure out how to adjust to something so inconsequential, you don’t belong on this job.
There’s gonna be a lot of crying come the first of the year when snowflakes learn exactly how much weight seniority holds. Because something tells me gone are the days of throwing a couple packs of smokes or a half dog into the watch secretaries drawer for “consideration”.
Seniority. Get some.

Yes. You get to wear skin tight tactical pants and shirts with some type of warrior logo. A backwards ball cap. You can grow your hair out and get sleeve tattoos.

Screw this. In the last few weeks I applied for a few suburban departments and did very well. But I made sure I told them I had children and family needs and that I expected them to work around them after I was hired. They listened and told me they would get back to me. Suburbs must be busy because they haven’t gotten back

Alot of that sucked. Are you going to say not one copper bitched about any of that during that time? I call bullshit if that's what you're saying. I'm positive you had your fair share of crybabies. Hey you know what else you guys had over today's coppers? Freedom. There were no TRRs, GPS, ICCs, BWCs. You didn't have mandated ISRs and had to hand out receipts with your info. You weren't gigged for not carrying a taser or mic. Some asshole got out of line? You put the boot to his ass now we have concepts like de-escalation and force mitigation that we have to strictly adhere to and consider and a force review unit to make sure of it. The previous generations got away with so much shit and don't try to say you didn't. You don't police in today's environment which I'll argue is more anti-police today than in any other time in history, even more so than the hippy 60s. Some things have gotten better, some things have gotten worse, so don't get all fuckin high and mighty because some coppers are voicing their dislike for the schedule change that can disrupt personal lives and for having to swipe in and out....

I’m sure you can. No one ever suggested you stay on the desk and eat your lunch. You can go back to the desk after lunch and continue your shopping on Amazon and EBay

Well said. I was considering running for FOP but there are so many entitled asshats on the job. Benefits need to be taken away in order for us to stick together like the old timers who got our benefits did.
Years ago it was easier to be United because the majority of officers were in patrol rotating every 28 days and had rotating days off. All were in the same boat and there were less “entitled”
All veterans over 15 years still in crap holes - I wish you all good luck on your tranfer bids. Same to all veterans this watch selection. Be aware these clout / never been the police alderman like commanders will not open quarterly bids. Make your decisions soon. Units you had it good and won if yiu were in a unit a long time. Now run for the hills! Guys 55 get the hell out of here. Guys under 5 years get yiur nice lateral move somewhere better for crying out loud. Guys 7 to 14 years on pace yourselves. Couldn't agree more with you! Take the full uninterrupted 30 away from the desk or put in a 30 minutes overtime slip. Although you technically can leave without swiping out, I highly doubt anything would come of it. I would advise against it but as a DSS I could careless. It'll be on you to explain should it ever come up. This job is becoming progressively harder and harder to endure. Eitherway, Officers, please slow down you have 8.5 hours to complete a given task.
-DSS (139 working days to go to 29+day) Hope I make it.

While you are at lunch maybe they could backlog those reports like they do for the beat cars. Can’t really be that urgent or an emergency if they walk into the district to file a report
I agree with this person. Some people on the desk would not take your arrest/inventory because it was "time to leave" even though it was not. Were talking 2-3 hours early sometimes. Why should a person who risks very little to nothing on the desk, watching TV shows, Shopping, gossiping and eating, every single day, be entitled to leave early all the time? So yeah, I really don't feel sorry for them.
