I was on the job for 30 years. I'll say it again, I was on the job for 30 years, meaning I didn't do the job for 30 years, at times I did more than others. At times I did less than others. In the end, everything balanced out. Looking back, it was a good job and a noble profession and it still is. With police officers hands cuffed behind their backs, the job is now easier than ever before. Anyone with a few years seniority knows this. Having said this, all the negativity, all the complaining by the P.O.'s is more toxic than anything headquarters and cityhall dishes out. What's worse, whether we admit it or not, we bring it home to our families. I walked in your shoes for a mile or two. This makes me qualified to voice a fact or two. There was a block of time in my years there, when I too became angry and bitter. This can happen easily with everything that's wrong in the department. During one of my bitching session, a young officer said to me, "Wow! I hope I'm not as angry and as bitter as you are when I have your time on the job". The young officer's words were a wake up call for me. We all seen the following comment on this blog: if you don't like it, go do something else". Fact is, as bad as things are, the pay and benefits are still worth staying for. Many have forgotten the pride and honor this profession brings. There's a happy medium in this profession. Find your happy medium, your comfort zone, and stay inside it. Thruths are simple, our thought become our words and our words become our actions, hence our happiness, or our bitterness. Don't change the world, change your world. We're supposed to be Chicago's finest. We can't change the department, we can change our mindset. For anyone thinking this is easy for me to say because I'm now retired, you're correct. It's easy because this is the same advice I give my son, who now wears the CPD uniform. No ones mind needs all the negativity and toxicity. As for the change in starting times, this department will never throw anything at us we can't handle, we're that strong. Stay strong and stay safe.

Fellas, I went on in 1968 as a Police Cadet, then sworn in as a P.O. in 1972, It hasn't changed and won't change. Moved to Central Florida on the East Coast in 2001. Best thing I ever did. Low taxes, no state income tax. I could go on and on. Try it, you'll like it.

As a black man born and raised in the projects of Chicago, I find myself in the unique position of knowing both sides here. Many times I find the comments offensive (feral beasts, free shit army, social program feeders, etc) but I can understand the frustration. After all if you have been working for 10, 15 years, you look at a able bodied adult and ask WTF is your excuse? Well, the government does not help. That free shit openly discussed is a pain in the ass to obtain as it should be. 150 a month if that for groceries is nothing compared to the millions wasted each night. Ask someone at Walmart, Costco and Sams about what happens to the milk and chicken each night. Two, jobs. When I was younger, we had a boss, not a CEO, no CFO, no CIO, no CTO. Just a boss, bonus checks, health care, tuition. Greed and automation killed that. Plus the very cheap foreign labor market. Not everyone can work for a hedge fund. Also, these young men 18-25 are not realizing one felony ruins your life. I have been in three situations with cops, two saved my life. I got robbed as a youth near Robert Taylor Homes and stupidly went looking for them, a white cop saw me with a broken bottle, stopped me, gave me 20 bucks and told me to go home. The next time a female acquaintance accused me of assault but the detective came to my house, was very polite and said after talking to me, he could tell the charges were bullshit. Yes this is out of control and the homicide numbers let alone the robberies and assaults are off the charts but cops and civilians are pitted against each other. It keeps government in charge
