CTU Priorities

  • The Chicago Teachers Union failed to participate in a major study aimed at protecting students from sexual violence, according to the study and its authors.

Consultant Maggie Hickey, a former federal prosecutor hired last year to help Chicago Public Schools revamp its Office of Student Protections and Title IX, wrote in a Sept. 26 report that she tried repeatedly to seek the input of CTU President Jesse Sharkey but received no cooperation.

“The Chicago Teachers Union President is the only person we contacted who failed to respond to our inquiries. We made multiple attempts to contact him by phone, by email, and through his assistant and office, during both our preliminary and follow-up evaluations,” Hickey wrote in a footnote to her 134-page report.
The union's concern isn't the safety of children - it's using the children as a bargaining chip to extract more money.

In this world of full employment (lowest unemployment in
50 years: i.e. December 1969), only fools would turn down
16%. Finance is not their strong point. That's why they work
as teachers. When the economy slows/turns, that 16% is
gonna look mighty good. Too bad it will be off the table by then.
Then the SSU (Sad Sacks Union) will settle for table scraps.

Meh. I’m not so sure about the mo’ money aspect, SCC. Word around the campfire is they want a much lower teacher to student ratio, more teachers aids, more security and nurses that are in the same school all day, everyday. Right now their situation is 1:30+. After my separation my ex and my kids live, well, elsewhere. Kids school is 1:15. At CPS you have these asshat “parents” that are “raising” these no-discipline kids to hate and disrespect ALL authority, and the schools are a sh!t show. City hall tossed a cynical 16% pay bump at them to see if they’d bite for the cash over the demands (which would cost a hell of a lot more), kinda like our pimped out union membership would. They didn't go for it, and I respect that. Our union sold out new hires and retirees for just a sniff of retro most gambled away at the casino like some ghetto lottery degenerates. Maybe if they get what they want (better work conditions), it might lead the way and our union members will grow some balls and make real demands for ourselves. Ja! Who am I kidding. Pipe-dreams go down the drain in this dump.

To address a few points made by pinheads in the comments, so far:

1. The "teachers" union, aka ctu, can Strike. The FOP cannot Strike. Thus, "protesting" for the ctu = Strike Picketing. "Protesting" for FOP = wandering in circles, somewhere, for some period of time. Big difference.

2. IF the ctu is truly rejecting city "offer" for the primary reasons stated most wordly in the easy to spot comment on this above, THEN the ctu would accept NO raise and an INCREASE to EQUAL percentage contributions to their fucking pensions as every other union, in exchange for these stated, in the comment, improvements, most costly, to benefit the children. AND publicly DECLARE this!!! If the teachers want to be respected, honored and appreciated, be WORTHY. EARN THIS. Will they???? (Yeah. I'm a funny guy. You kill me last, okay?)

3. The "Full Employment" economy point does not apply here. Union with Contract = doesn't give a fuck. Union, with Contract and democrat saturated leadership, supported by democrat saturated membership = does not have to give a fuck. Union, with Contract, democrat saturated and relied upon to hustle the democrat annointed candidates to reelection = does not give a fuckload of fucks. Catch up, sparky. It is ALL about the politics.

4. Taking typical retarded cheapshots at teachers, even ctu teachers, is assisine, as in: from the asses of nine assholes into the asses of nine assholes. Teaching children is, when not perverted by politics, as challenging as parenting. As is found in every union, the greater the union's leaderships are ASSHOLES, the more of it's membership will be ASSHOLES. FOP is a union. Do the math. PLUS, being a political union, ctu is packed full of ASSHOLES. Capeesh?

5. Were the NOT ASSHOLES members of the ctu to outnumber the ASSHOLES, the ctu leadership would not consist of ASSHOLES. Again, Capeesh?

Taxpayers, pony up.

Or move to another county, at least.

The crooks here are as durable as cockroaches, and more plentiful.

Capeesh?

I teach college and a lot of our students come from CPS and they are mostly functionally illiterate and are gang banger, punk, disrespectful idiots. But Maggie Hickey is a friend of loris and the machine. She will screw the CPD with the consent decree. When she was state inspector general she refused to investigate Frank capuzi and Patricia van pelt for corruption because these two were protected by the dummycrats such as madigan, Rahm and John Cullerton. She only wrote the report to help racist, hypocrite, fake reformer Lori. And Lori is also too stupid to realize that her own staff is tight with CTU leadership and undermining her from within. I am confused about the three month break for teachers? School ends in the third week of June. Most, if not all teachers return to their class room the last week of August (without pay) to prepare for the new school year. That equals 8 weeks or two months. You forgot to mention that teachers grade homework and papers without pay at home. Many teachers are at work one hour before class starts. Planning time for teachers were taken away by the city. Most teachers put in a 10 hour work day, every day. I agree the contract demands are unrealistic and it is too easy for the union to strike.

1236 am hit it on the head. It’s not just about the money, but that’s apparently too complex for most coppers to understand. You voted for the last contract to get raises while getting screwed. New guys and new guys who aren’t even on the job lost money they will never recover. Retirees now pay for healthcare that was free and guess what, the City wants more than a 100% increase this time around. We lost in tuition reimbursement. We lost in healthcare with copays and a two-tiered hospital system. Ultimately, you will have given back any raise you got in that last contract. Wake the fuck up!

I guess you same people would take 16% if we lost sworn affidavits and some of the other disciplinary protections we have because it’s apparently all about the money. You need to realize this, that is exactly what the City is trying to get back in the next contract. Any raise is meaningless when you don’t have a job because you gave up rights that protect you

It’s like none of you armchair quarterbacks have ever set foot in a public school. Most of these teachers put up with shit you’d all have a meltdown about. One of the issues 1236 left out is that CPS wants to save money by taking prep time away from the teachers so that they can be used to shuttle in and out of an absent teacher’s classroom instead of paying a substitute. Loss of the prep time means doing work at home. How many coppers would do a lick of work at home for free?

We all bitch when people who don’t do our job complain about us or tell us how to do our jobs. Now, all of you hypocrites are doing the same to the teachers. If you’ve never stood in their shoes STFU!

I read somewhere that CPS is only now going to spend $7 million on the program to address the predatory behavior.
But it’s not tied to their Greedy Contract demand proposals:
$2.5 Million for new nurses... 30 nurses that is.
$3.5 Million for new case managers, is that for 40 of them?
$3.5 Million for new social workers, how many that be?

It’s for The Kids.
And GrootFoot says schools will remain open during any Strike. Not for learnings reading, writing, arithmetic but so The Kids have somewhere to go and eat. I imagine the yella’buses will still be running too.
It’s not like many households would be empty of adult supervision being that hardly anyone’s working these days.
But having The Kids come to a school and not read-write-arithmetic anything... is pretty much what they do anyway during a school year.

Let them, (the 94% in favor) sstrike and fire the lazy lot.
Clear out all the corrupt school management too.

You wonder why Paul Vallas was ousted from CPS...he wanted to clean house and have accountability for the spending and the wasting of money, particularly the appointed School Board. Shortshanks didn’t want that and neither did Rahm, and looking at the past mayoral election neither did the Taxpayers and the Teachers.

Although I have deep respect for teachers in general, way too many are leftists, socialists who spend too much time indoctrinating instead of educating . I spent a year as a sub in CPS and was shocked at what I saw and heard. The leadership of the union seems to be socialist and, yes, pay and benefits and increasing their membership is their primary concern ( as it should be), with little concern about children as a whole. The fact that the union would not cooperate with a plan to stop the endangerment of of children from sexual predators is shameful and telling. Many times I have heard teachers blame the poor performance on the children themselves instead of the educational environment in the schools. A cop out on their part. Too bad the mayor cannot fire all strikers and replace them. They have a great deal with high pay, short work year and pay little or nothing into their health care and pension. But, bankruptcy of the CPS will be a cure for their greed.

Can other employees from a separate union (nurses, doctors ect) be added to the teachers contract. Wouldn't that be similar to police asking for more fire personnel to assist in our jobs?

I am retired cpd and married to a cps school teacher. All the comments I’m reading about what teachers are/should be/should do remind me off the advice given to the police department about what the police should do that is given by non law enforcement. Teachers know about as much about policework as police know about teaching. All you coppers should take a page out of their book and show some solidarity. Until then you are of no consequence to the mayor or the city . I know there is a no strike clause in the cpd contract. Refuse any overtime offered. Send the city a message. ( this will never happen because 95 percent of copper are too short sighted and are not willing to make any personal sacrifices). Gotta make those payments on their big shot jeeps

Why doesn't the mayor tell CTU to go pound sand? Answer: Federal funds! All the local pols count on those for their slush funds! The longer the kids are out of school, the less money the city gets from the feds! Otherwise, I would love to see the teachers cool their heels on the picket line, earning nothing! That would cut into their Acapulco Christmas vacations!

Now they claim they are broke the months school is out!

You forgot to mention that teachers grade homework and papers without pay at home. - That's why they were paid for the months they did not work to amend for that.
Planning time for teachers were taken away by the city. - NO it was taken away by their demands in last contract because the lack basic financial skills also probably one of the reasons why male scores are so low in Chicago!

You’re not confused, you're deliberately miss characterizing what occurred most likely cause you're married to a teacher.

Let’s be honest, these teachers give 2 shits about the kids! Sharky gives even less then 2 shits. His job is to line his pockets and the teachers pockets. If you calculated the exact hours worked vs. Police it would make you sick. Earning 70-100k for 9 months of work. How about the bill Governor pritzker signed, waiving minimal requirements to be a public school instructor. Let us and the public remember their contribution to their pension vs. police. All while they protest with their representatives shouting “fuck the police”. CTU endorses a curriculum of anti-police propaganda. Not to mention that they do not adhere to the residency requirements. FOIA the records and fact check these comments. CTU = Leftist socialism

Well OK sport lets play teachers get 2+plus weeks at Christmas, extra days for thanksgiving, spring break week, every holiday, teachers institute days and 1/2 days more like 4 months off minimum! Grading papers hah yea OK! Lori should do what President Reagan did with air traffic controllers, fire all of them and start over this would save taxpayers billions, and as a bonus maybe we could get new teachers that teach and not bullshit. Oh and then they could contribute at least 9% to pensions like police and fire do,and the savings to taxpayers on real estate tax bills would be monumental, and the sjw teachers could them teach where most of them live in the suburbs violating the ordinance to live in Chicago! that would be "winning," #Firethemall

How is that spelled...... BANKRUPTCY ….FOP needs to get off their asses quickly, with a new contract

Let’s not forget that FOP went down to Springfield with Rahm to lobby legislators to extend the amortization of funding our pension to 90% from 25 years to 40 years. They also back loaded the the payments to give Rahm more budgetary wiggle room, with the larger payments kicking in 2020, when Rahm was out of office or into his third term. Why did the FOP make a deal with the devil? Why did the FOP help Rahm when the pension problem was solved by the previous legislation? Read the Tribune article folks, it spells it all out in plain English. The FOP is not our friend and can’t be trusted. And not just teachers, some of those “Ph.D candidates” who work in the CTU administration office drink and use too. And they are SO damn smart and intelligent they don’t even show up for their VOS court dates. Too busy I guess. Warrant issued. Next case...

I know a CPS teacher who just retired, has a helluva heroin addiction, was a regular user while teaching. She travels the World now to drug -friendly destinations. She said all those lunches we pay for, the fruit ends in the trash can. She could not believe the wasted food.

Teachers want more helpers, more nurses, more shrinks.....but they keep voting Dem? Don't they realize that Dem Officials support bringing the unwashed masses into our schools, complete with diseases, behavior issues, cultural problems? Socialists always want to hire more help instead of correcting the problem (parents). They shit on the Church, then wonder why the kids are unholy terrors. They embrace degenerate lifestyle, yet confused as to why so many mental issues. They adore single parents, yet baffled by undisciplined kids. They encourage sex changes in children, yet alarmed at tranny suicides.

Delusional? Most teachers have to live in the city. Weekends off is a normal benefit for a majority of occupations. I challenge you to show aides that grade papers and develop lesson plans.I know several teachers that are close friends. They have residency requirements, buy city stickers, AND they are required to develop weekly lesson plans on their own time. They have the same problem that police face. Very liberal administrators demanding new lessons every week. If students are failing or even missing work, teachers must make contact with a parent on their own time. I learned a majority of teachers do not agree with the CTU and their liberal policies, just like the police and their clueless command staff.

“The Unions only concern is not to pay over 2% into their pension and letting the tax payers keep fitting the rest of the bill for them.”-10/06/2019 07:09:00 AM

Last CTU contract (2015-16) raised the pension contributions to 9% only for new hires, added some healthcare costs too.
There are 35,000 CPS employees covered and include 21,000 that are teachers, don’t know how many new hires are paying the 9% and which pension the aides, nurses, admin pay into. Must be small or Rahm wouldn’t have agreed. It’s also about votes.

If Larry LightLoafer was serious about education and it’s being fundamental civil right, then CPS shouldn’t be allowed to close their doors.
Plenty of out of work eggheads would gladly take $15 hr to teach rather than brewing coffee or bagging dollar store potpourri from 5am -11am without benefits.
And the way some institutions of higher education dole out teaching certifications is troubling whereas some really demand putting in the full effort, resulting in some new teachers coming out with a decent frame of mind to actually try to teach the 3-R’s.

But I’ll agreed, it’s more about money than the kids.
Shame on the 94% that voted to close the schools until “demands” are met.

I keep hearing the old tired refrain that the teachers spend a lot of time , their own time, grading papers . I also read here that the teachers come in early a week before school starts without pay and they come in early every day to prepare for the classroom. Well, that is true, but for a very small portion of teachers. They are on yearly salary and are not hourly, but they do get paid extra for every little thing they do. I was a teacher for a bit and have teachers in my family. If spending all of this time grading papers and doing lesson plans was really true and accurate, the union would make an issue of it and demand more money. Let the CPS actually research this issue and show it for what it is, falsehoods. Then some liar says kids are dieing in the schools because there are no nurses there. That is the biggest lie of all. Yes, kids get sick and need to be sent home and sometimes they cannot locate a parent to come and get them, so the school is stuck with them. There is no need for a nurse and a counselor in every school. Have one of each for a school district and let them make the rounds. Just an excuse to add more people to the union. Lets have facts and not rhetoric
