Teachers Want What Now?

We thought they represented....you know....teachers:
  • Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has raised another issue that she said is holding up an agreement with the teachers union: affordable housing.

In a statement late Tuesday — nine days from a strike date set by the Chicago Teachers Union — the mayor said the union is “demanding that the city enact CTU’s preferred affordable housing policy as part of their contract.”

    [...]

In a response early Wednesday morning, the CTU tweeted that “we have nearly 17,000 homeless students in CPS.”

“Our proposals demand more staff to support families in danger of losing housing, and advocate for a program that financially helps (support staff members) and new teachers purchase a home,” the union continued. "The mayor finds them ‘unreasonable.’"

    [...]

But [Groot] said the CTU’s collective bargaining agreement “is not the appropriate place for the city to legislate its affordable housing policy.”
No shit. Even though we live in Chicago - unlike many hundreds of teachers - we don't get to choose CTU delegates. We choose aldercreatures who are supposed to represent the citizenry. CTU dictating policy for 2.6 million citizens is a non-starter here and Groot really ought to hammer them on it.

Do you really believe that? Parents homeless also?
Think about that. That means no property tax. How
can teachers justify a raise? Sounds like D.C. Swamp
Politics to me. (Tweets come back to bite them)

From the article:

Union officials also noted that other groups of public employees in Chicago, like police officers and firefighters, receive housing subsidies. The union also claims that about two-thirds of teaching assistants, school clerks and other paraprofessionals qualify for free or reduced lunch for their children, and many cannot afford a two-bedroom apartment based in any Chicago neighborhood based on prevailing rental rates.
_________

We get subsidies? Where's mine? I asked around. Apparently they forgot a lot of us. Or is this like the 3% compounded COLA. Nonexistent.

Trot out the old "Officer Next Door" program

Maybe a teacher or three will be incentivized

CPS will be hiring more teachers soon. It maybe a great time for a change of careers for some coppers! Just think you will have Summers off and your paycheck will not be hit up with a hefty pension contributions. Life will be a lot easier dealing with 36 second graders instead mentals, domestics, and traffic stops. Do not believe that CPS takes all types of kids with emotional and handicaps and crams them in normal kids. Private schools get their fair share of problem kids. The big plus is having a real union that can have its members strike for a contract with better working conditions, not a contract decided by a machine influenced arbitrator.

Mayor Lightweight fancies herself a "Progressive", while Jessie Sharkey is an outright Communist! Remember this summer, CTU secretly sent a delegation of teachers, at a cost of several thousands of dollars, to Venezuela.(SCC was the first to report it.) While there, the Chicago Teachers Union representatives rallied around the Communist Tyrant, Nicolas Maduro. CTU representatives were photographed chanting: "Viva Maduro", with their fists raised in the Power Salute! El Presidente Maduro, is a multi-millionaire phony, who has virtually bankrupted, what was once the wealthiest nation in Latin America. Family members of El Presidente, are living lives of luxury in Europe, while the countrymen they abandoned are eating out of garbage trucks! Yet, the CTU representatives stated that as bad as conditions are; El Presidente should be praised because he kept the schools open. WHICH TOTALLY IGNORED THE FACT THAT CONDITIONS ARE BAD BECAUSE OF MADURO! CTU Teachers chose to ignore the root of the problem, just as they choose to ignore the fact that way too many of the kids graduating from CPS are functional illiterates! The parochial school system survives in these secular times; because the Chicago Public School System, with the exception of a handful of Selective Enrollment schools is an Absolute Disaster and Failure! Whatever the final outcome, the taxpayers will be the Ultimate Losers! And if there was ever an argument for school vouchers, it is CPS. What CPS wastes and charges to produce functional illiterates, is far more than the cost of a Performance Based School Voucher System. Stay Safe and Strong! Baby "G"

Why not build dorm rooms across the city for the “ homeless” students. And to prevent problems, have Sharkey, Gates, and the rest of the union bigshots move into each building as a role model. The money can come out of those huge paychecks the union brass is making. Thus the crime rate will go down and everyone will be happy.

Read many posts where they say we should fire all the teachers this should be done immediately, the mayor could really stand strong for the taxpayers for the citizens of Chicago enough of this organization with their bullshit I agree order them to come back to work or they be fired simple as that. When is enough enough they are embarrassing the mayor that’s exactly what they are doing why don’t they have a no strike clause in their contract? So many of them live outside of the city anyway in violation of the contract using city addresses why not set up a unit with enough people To investigate this? Look at all we could terminate immediately it’s ridiculous they violate everything just like a communist organization. Now they want this why don’t they open their homes for all the homeless children they are a bunch of liars.

Mayor take a stand you were elected to take the stand to stick up for the people you say you’re a fighter don’t be a coward and get into these idiots. Let them strike Like many posts have said get rid of all of them go back to work or you’re fired simple as that when is enough enough and then you say mayor that they will get paid at the end for all days that I miss that as an incentive to stay off another vacation ridiculous how can this be they didn’t vote for you anyway they went for the Tonithey are embarrassing you and embarrassing the citizens of the city of Chicago. They gave Tony millions and millions of dollars and she lost which is a great day for the city of Chicago only thing better is to get rid of her completely along with her aid the states attorney who has caused so much despair.

Over 17,000 homeless students! Where the fu@k do they come up with that number? Does anyone with some common sense know or have an understanding of what over 17,000 students looks like? Tie that in with the alleged tens of thousands of homeless adults and the homeless should be living by the dozens on each and every block of the city. That would mean no one could walk down ANY given street without running into scores of homeless people. IS THERE A PROBLEM? Yes, but not to these over inflated extremes. They will do and say anything to grab a headline and steal money for human services, while deflecting attention to the truth of the matter and focus on real solutions. Lori it is a simple solution order them all back to work immediately the first day they strike and if they refuse fire them I would bet strongly that the social justice warriors the so-called teachers who are overpaid by a huge margin would march right back in probably as much as 80% also put in their contract a no strike clause if they come back and if they don’t start all over again the kids could be out of school maybe a month or so maybe two months maximum we have a brand new school system brand new teachers also fire all of the top of the Chicago public schools get rid of all them assholes all out on that sexual assaults to occur and none of them were fired

That number is self reported to CPS. If you fit into one of their categories, you get enrolled in a program where all fees are waived, you get free meals, uniforms, tutoring, school supplies, medical care, etc. All good for the homeless student, but a real incentive to lie about your situation.

Also, the homeless count includes children and youth who lack a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence and includes children and youth who are sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or similar reason (referred to as “doubled-up“)

So, if you move in with a relative to help you with your kids while you work, your kids are counted. If you move in with a friend as a roommate to save money, your kids are counted. If you move out due to a divorce, your kids are counted.

The 17k "homeless" students are part of the large contingent of students invading CPS from the suburbs from homes who don't pay property taxes that subsidize the cost of their education. The school administrations will tolerate these students as long as they don't cause problems because each one is government subsidized and the schools don't want to lose that $$ (another reason why a CPS education costs upwards of $13-14k/student).

So because 17,000 CPS students are homeless, they want the city to help new teachers and support staff buy homes. That doesn’t make sense. The students are homeless, not the teachers. Why would my tax dollars go towards buying a teacher a home? Of course I mean outside of their salary. this is like us saying “the crime rate is too high, the citizens of the west side need to feel safe, therefore the city should purchase every Chicago cop a new security system”. One has nothing to do with the other. Just a word salad by the CTU.

Secondly. They’re trying to use their legally binding contract with the city to enforce their progressive ideology on the entire city. It’s a brilliant idea, and one that should be shot down at all costs because of how dangerous it is. So the city will have to build so many units of affordable housing because of the teachers contract. Or next time around they’ll ask for in the teachers contract for a $20/hr minimum wage for all People working within Chicago. Or the city has to provide healthcare for all residents because it’s in the CTU contract. From a SJW point of view it’s a brilliant strategy, but it’s super dangerous. This is overreach of unbelievable proportions. They’re trying to enact city wide law through their contract. How about in our contract we negotiate for taking away the CTUs ability to strike. Lightfeets might be down for that one. Sorry CTU, you can’t strike, it’s in the FOP contract. No one should support them in their strike. Ridicule them as you drive by when you see them protesting in the streets outside of the schools. They’re a complete embarrassment.

I hate Lightfoot. I think she is a complete fucking goof. But I hope she stands strong on this one. Let them strike, let them strike all year long. Every week they strike, the offer of a pay raise drops another 1%. Put out commercials about how unreasonable they are, about how they’re refusing to sign a contract because of stipulations having nothing to do with teachers. Run a whole campaign against them. Her initial offers were already way too generous and should’ve never been that much. But if she stands strong on this and tells the CTU to beat feet, she’s get a little tip of the cap from me, then we can go back to hating each other.

They had the teacher next door program (and officer next door program). Good luck actually getting a house, it has to be a fha house, with no bids at the auction, and in one of the worst census tracks in the city. During the housing boom, few meeting the fha foreclosure criteria with no bids at the auction were impossible to find. A dem. program in name only.

Preckwinkle’s proposed $6.18 billion budget, which establishes the spending priorities of the county, marks an increase of roughly $260 million compared with last year’s proposal. Much of the money, $2.8 billion, goes to the county’s health and hospital system, which covers health care costs for lower-income, uninsured and underinsured residents.

Ummm. Whatever happened to Obamacare, you know, the mandatory health insurance?
2800000000.00 for health care? Just in this county? That's almost 1/2 the county budget.

A pension consolidation task force Thursday released a report that recommends the state combine roughly 650 suburban and Downstate police and fire pension funds to try to increase efficiency and lower costs — while also increasing pension benefits.

And while many cheered movement on a huge problem, not all are on board, including the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police. The organization was blunt in its response, saying the state has a “worst in the nation” track record of managing public pensions, which they called a “cause for concern among working and retired law enforcement officers.”

The report argues that the funds are largely falling behind in meeting their minimum required investment rates of return, and should be consolidated to achieve substantially higher returns and to save taxpayers more than $160 million on an annual basis. It’s a plan local governments have been pushing for years — and one that would require legislation as soon as possible to get it running.

It’s just one piece of the puzzle to fix a statewide pension mess, which also includes $134 billion in unfunded liabilities from five statewide public pension funds and Chicago’s $28 billion in four of the city’s own funds.

The task force — led by Deputy Gov. Dan Hynes — recommends consolidating the pension plans under two new statewide funds — one for police and one for fire. As separate plans, each would have its own board in charge of its own personnel and asset management decisions, and each would remain separate from the assets of other statewide pension systems.

In forming the task force in February, the governor’s office argued that the $355 billion in accrued liabilities from the state’s pension funds are placing increased pressure on local governments and the state, driving up property taxes and crowding out funding for public services. Of the state’s 667 separate public pension funds, 656 are suburban and Downstate police and fire pension funds regulated by the Illinois Pension Code.

Maybe when Jaba the Hut gets his little sausage fingers on all these new fresh funds, he can provide some of that low income housing.

Keep voting democrats, they are great until the spend all of your hard earned money.

17k homeless students? I doubt that number is what the CTU claims; higher or lower.

EVERYTHING that our students and schools deserve, in writing, includes:

Place full-time librarians, counselors, clinicians, psychologists, social workers and nurses in every school
Make sure all students get special education services they are entitled to by law
Hire special education teachers, case managers and paraprofessionals
Maintain real class size limits
Give us the freedom to plan, grade & be professionals on our teacher preps (the limited time during the day when we don’t have students in front of us)
Establish true restorative justice programs in schools
Take police officers out of schools
Make all schools sanctuary schools
Provide mental health services for all students and staff

Typical. Mayor wants Trump to pay for the police and city expenses at his rally, but doesn’t want the money from other rally’s. Certain organizations and political rally’s get a freebee others have to pay. Sounds familar

Get over the residency. You can’t win on a lawsuit. Been tried and failed. With the juice of the CTU m, number of employees, sentiment towards teachers, don’t you think they would have filed a lawsuit against residency. A lawyer could make plenty of money if he could win the residency , so why aren’t they lining up to file the lawsuit

This is so correct if Lori stood up to these SJW urban terrorists that threaten the well being of "the children," fire every last 1 of them, how about also investigating and terminating all of them living in the suburbs using city addresses? Why not no strike on their extremely overpaid contracts? At least get this at a minimum. The days of support from the public for these morons is over, hope they get terminated quickly, watch and see how many then beg to keep that gig for 7 months that they work!

Fire teachers??? Have you guys lost your minds? You do understand that a four year degree and specific certifications are required to be a CPS teacher. You do understand that anyone in a classroom of diverse learners has to have additional certifications to write the IEP's. You see, the legal paperwork is something that gets no media attention, but it drives out most teachers who quit the profession after a few years. The paperwork for each student is unbelievable-- ask anyone who has ever had to actually do it.

You think Lightfoot can find 25,000 people with these specific certifications in a few weeks??? LOL... Enjoy trying to control 350,000 kids on the street and 10,000 teachers tying up traffic downtown. The CTU is everything YOU WISH the FOP was... now get your nose off the storefront window and get ready for some overtime.

Inaccurate journalism has led people to believe that fire & police get subsidies to live in the city. Ridiculously untrue. When I was a new officer over 20 years ago, I looked into the “Officer Next Door” program. I decided that I didn’t want to be raped, robbed or murdered in my own home and especially even more so targeted because of my profession in the neighborhoods the program was open. Better yet, these days, some liberal news outlet would’ve demanded I be prosecuted if I happened to successfully defend myself as a victim in one of those neighborhoods.
