- As Interim Supt. Charlie Beck takes the reins of the second largest police force in the country, the department is facing some significant turnover in its top ranks in the wake of former Supt. Eddie Johnson being fired.
Sources told CBS 2’s Suzanne Le Mignot about 20 high-ranking officers have submitted their retirement paperwork. Most of those officers were appointed to their current positions by Johnson, whom Mayor Lori Lightfoot fired on Monday.
CPD spokesman Anthony [Google-me] confirmed Deputy Chief of Patrol George Devereux, Chief of Organized Crime Salvador Avila, and Commander of Airport Law Enforcement Thomas O’Brien were retiring, but could not immediately confirm any other retirements in the top ranks.
All of which we broke a week ago. There are a bunch more listed in various comment sections...some real, some wishful thinking, most no great loss.
The thing that needs to be done now is to close out those positions that were redundant or useless - cut costs, eliminate straight-line supervision, combine (or eliminate) units.

- There was ZERO reason to go from six Deputy Chiefs to eighteen
- There is no need to have commanders in charge of units of less than two-hundred-fifty officers
- Homan Square needs to be subjected to an efficiency review and about five-hundred bodies reassigned to District patrol
- Same with HQ and anyone associated with CompStat - you want to see how a District is doing? One person running a stat sheet from HQ is enough to drag a commander over the coals. You don't need four or five people in a front office tabulating shit.
Let's go Groot - you too Charlie. This is your big opportunity.

Remember, prior to McStreetlights reshuffling we had Assistant Deputy Superintendents. They were an equivalent rank to Deputy Chief but were in several positions. One was a street deputy which is now a Deputy Chief. So even though there are more deputy chiefs the exempt ranks are not as inflated as it looks. But how about get rid of XOs. Nothing but a gopher for their boss. Especially commanders as XOs for deputy chiefs. Gimme a break.

The total number of exempt positions need to be reduced. Exempt members need to be held accountable for the positions that they hold. If an exempt member's unit or units is failing to serve the public then they should be returned to their career service rank and not moved from unit to unit.

Unfortunately, I must agree with you. When I was on the job, the democrats hide more then a few very high paying jobs for civilians within the police department budget. A few of these assistant directors were within the first deputy office, but none of them ever worked there. Finance had a few, but none of them ever worked there. I found out when I had a job of listing department vehicles assigned to HQ . It is all a fraud and got much worse under Rich M.

districts don't need someone to run things at the exempt rank. Most cities do not do this and they work fine. The exempt rank has become nothing but a patronage and crony rank with the gold braid pension as the prize. Gold stars were a way to pass up captains for the job.
Get rid of gold braid pensions. Civil service rank pensions only.

How many years total at 016 and 050? I bet at least 25.
I'm wondering if Beck received a waiver from the ILETB. I'm thinking that if he attended an out of state academy 40 plus years ago there may be some training updates required. One can't just appoint someone as Chief or Superintendent without a waiver from the Training Board to attain Certification as a Police Officer.

Where are all the goofs talking about how no lowly beat officer or supervisor on scene would be punished. “It’ll just be the command staff since they passed it onto them.” WRONG. Those responding officers will be fired, guaranteed. As preliminary investigators they’ve been trained to recognize impaired drivers. At a minimum, you don’t allow him to drive away. What if he crashes and kills someone? Those officers on scene, through their indecision and neglecting to do what needed to be done, will be hit with the ol’ “discredit to the department” (the catch all rule violation). .

Agree they need to trim the gold stars and some of the Units, but you're wrong about Patrol. The lions share of police work is done there. Kids learn there and go on to be Tac guys, Dics and Supervisors. They need a lot of supervision and mentoring. Sgts, Lts and Captains on the watch to oversee and teach the officers that will move on. That's where most of your mistakes and then lawsuits come from too.
Remember Barb "Pillows" West used to bring her pillow to work. Unbelievable she is where she is. She should be gone.

When I came on, in the 80's, there were a total of 11 award ribbons you could have (including one you had to be killed to get). You'd see guys with maybe 2 or 3 (most common were D/Comm, Unit Citation, Lifesaving, Police Off of the Month, and Award of Valor). If you saw a guy with 4 on, you usually knew the story behind it, and it most likely involved that member with being shot..
Now, there are 34 award ribbons. Only 14 of them require the use of your handcuffs to get. In my last 5 years on, I was getting these "feel good" awards for, not going on the medical, crime went down 1 year, and Obama became POTUS. This feel good award system kicked off with the CAPS ribbon in the early 90's. When it came out, it somewhat resembled the Award of Valor. It was a common joke to those who wore it about what gun battle they were in to get that award, the they would sheepishly answer what the award was.
I had 7 on my dress blouse, of which only 3 involved making arrests. That's how everyone looks like a Mexican General. You could have about 6 rows of ribbons on your uniform, and had never made an arrest.
