Six Months Suspension

  • The city's police disciplinary panel Thursday night suspended a Chicago police sergeant for six months after he was found to have unjustifiably used deadly force when he shot an unarmed teen with mental disabilities in an off-duty incident two years ago.
The "merit" sergeant, who's been hidden down at "Pillows" West's office for a while now, avoided criminal charges altogether.

Perhaps someone downtown can now explain why a sergeant, who merely approved reports he was ordered to approve so the exempts could go home for a shooting he wasn't even on the scene of, got fired earlier this year.

The disparity is incredible to say the least.

I thought we called unjustifiable deadly force something else..? What was it again? Oh. Murder. Where the hell are the criminal charges if the police board thinks he murdered someone???

I am assuming the guardian of the kid got paid off or they are to stupid to pursue this crime. either way it is ashamed this moron only getting 6 months.

That other stupid fool sgt R.Garza better get fired or atleast a 6 month suspension for his drunk shenanigans and involvement with the suicide/murder of the off duty sergeant.

Thank you beck for ending the merit promotions!

Made merit sgt, taken care of right away and taken care of and hidden after the shooting. Copa said fire him the shooting was unjustified but Eddie johnson(his friend) said only suspend him for six months. Two young coppers(white) in 004 were almost murdered by a kid in a stolen car who can inches from running over and killing his partner were recommended for firing from Johnson for firing into the vehicle and NOT hitting the offender. The offender would later be shot and killed after the vehicle crashed. The Paul O’Neil shooting in 004. But this guy, unarmed gets shot and 6 months. These coppers are attacked with a vehicle and almost get killed ON CAMERA and he wants them fired. Double standard?? Yes.

You couldn’t have said it any better. Not to mention someone should do some looking into this further because this Sergeant changed his story multiple times. Why no rule 14. How may people who were on scene and or investigated went down several times to COPA because they all witnessed the sergeant lying. Because he is aligned with Farrakhan he is getting six months. Chief Barb West has hidden him in her office since the incident. Any other supervisor would of been sent to call back.

This is absolutely unbelievable! The discipline disparity in this department is outrageous. Anyone who is facing separation for anything less than shooting an unarmed autistic teen should file a class action lawsuit against the department and the city. Someone explain to me why he was never stripped in this whole investigation and put in no pay status yet an officer who was spat on immediately gets stripped for an emergency takedown. There is no legitimacy in this department, made bosses, and political hacks will always receive preferential treatment. Does anyone know if Farrakhan is hiring white PO’s? Could really use an insurance policy seeing as I’m a long way from retirement.

Well boss, tell me just exactly HOW it works then from your personal experience, who your attorney was, if they were from FOP or you made an investment with a lawyer the city is actually afraid of and doesn’t want to go toe to toe with. A wrongful termination lawsuit is entirely within possibility when you can show examples of punitive measures taken for rule violations which are doled out more strongly one one party than another. What it would take, is someone with nothing to lose and a smart attorney to take the case pro bono in exchange for the back end back scratch deal to take the counter suit after they win their jobs back and the lawyer take their 30% out of a bigger verdict on the back end. Say, a class action on behalf of many officers who have been punished more harshly for similar incidents than KM. There is a bigger picture. So stop jumping reds and blacks and start moving horses and bishops. You, sir man or ze, are ridiculous.

There has always been disparities in punishment and always will be. City isn’t afraid of any attorney and attorneys don’t do pro bono for police. Actually they don’t take 30% unless they have a sure winner They charge by the hour. Talk to people that have won and you will find the attorneys take a huge chunk. As far as a class action , you just don’t make it a class action suit

Is this the same Sgt Franko that has a relative that works for COPA?
if so I'd call his firing irony and poetic justice.
