Get Your Ballots In

The deadline is fast approaching for the FOP election and believe it or not, politicians pay attention to participation as a measure of how involved we all are regarding our representation.

No one says you have to vote for an entire slate - pick and choose. We went heavily for independents this time around.

Vote.

Question. Retired cop after 31 years at cpd. I was always in FOP and would send my check every year to remain in FOP after retirement. About 3 years ago, I never got my usual letter/bill in the mail to remain in FOP and send my check. I called FOP and was told too bad, once you are out, you are out.

This year I heard from another retiree that I could rejoin FOP and just pay what I am in the rears. I called FOP and left a message with reception, no call back. I emailed two persons listed on the FOP website, no email nor call back.

Am I crazy or wrong about this retiree rejoining FOP? Does anyone know a specific person over at FOP that I should be addressing specifically, if I can rejoin? Thank you for your time.

You can pay your past dues to become a member again, but you will not be able to vote any longer.

Call Pension Board and they will email, fax or send you Authorization form to take your yearly dues out for FOP ($40) in November.

No one votes because it's so hard and inconvenient. You have to fill in circles, then put the ballot not into one, but two separate envelopes. And then to top it off you have to drop the post marked envelope in a mailbox. That's too much work. [sarcasm off]

Still waiting to found out why we have 17 trustees—the average Fortune 500 board has 9.1 members. Surely the FOP isn’t a Fortune 500 organization.

Is it worth to rejoin is up for debate, but the life insurance could be helpful to your estate one day.
When my Ret. membership expired in ‘17 or‘18 it happened to me also.
I believe it was printed in a past FOP7 newsletter that due to the FOP changes in the rules/policy about sending out reminders to many retirees that for whatever reason didn’t respond.
So for me, I called and spoke with the receptionist who took my credit card number over the phone for the late dues and I was reinstated even though they said in the newsletter that they can’t. I now have the pension board make the annual dues deduction.

Don’t leave messages, there are many to sort through and they will get lost - even for the Actives... keep calling., seems midweek is best and before ballot counting starts too.

From an old retiree. Say what you want about FOP, but before a union we really had no rights. No cash OT, rotating every 28 days, no seniority on transfer or assignment, work sometimes 16 hrs on Election Day and those in the districts 12 hour shifts with NO COMPENSATION just to mention a few. Reason would be helping the officers now on the job. $30 or $40 isn’t going to break you. Benefits, probably none except maybe feeling you are helping the officers following us.

Might be older, doubt it but COP and local 1975 , remember that date because Mayor Byrne didn’t give us the right to unionize and have a contract until 1980. Also below is an exert from a 2016 newspaper article which clearly states the FOP negotiated the first contract 35 years ago. 2016 minus 35 equals 1981
Bottom line, COP never got us a union and all the benefits and rights were granted thru our 1st contract and improved upon in later one

From the moment Chicago's Fraternal Order of Police started negotiating its first contract with City Hall 35 years ago, the union identified an issue that would prove key to its members: ensuring officers had robust protections when they were investigated for misconduct.
City Hall had its own focus: money.

The current crop of CPD members most likely are not aware that Chicago FOP #7, did not exist until late 1981. That coincides with Jane Byrne being the Mayor of Chicago between the years of 1979 and 1983. Janie was the true heroine and benefactor of better work conditions and salary boosts for the CPD, though it was in the Byrne years that the FOP began representing us. However, it was police loving Byrne who caused the changes, not the FOP.
Since the FOP became our bargaining agent, I can say, with conviction, that they have not been instrumental in any MAJOR defining act to make the job any better. Anyone? Name one meaningful accomplishment.
And that people, is why there has always been a low voting turnout. In essence, they are useless and most cops know so.

Do you have an answer on how to get a ballot? Where? By when to vote? Answers to the original question? Or do you just like to answer legitimate questions with a " Why didn't you...?" As far as I know there's still time "before the election" so answers to the question would be helpful.
