Guilty

  • A Cook County jury Friday found four-time felon Shomari Legghette guilty of the 2018 murder of Chicago Police Cmdr. Paul Bauer.

Seated in the front-row courtroom seat she had occupied for most of the trial, Bauer’s widow, Erin Bauer, showed little reaction as a clerk read off guilty verdicts on each of the six counts against 46-year-old Legghette.

Legghette, standing several feet from from Bauer’s family and rows of CPD officers, showed no emotion when the verdicts were read. He faces 45 years to life in prison.

Bauer’s family issued a statement, thanking the prosecution team, witnesses to the crime and the jury.

“Today is a bittersweet day for everyone who loved Paul,” the statement from the family read. “We are so happy and relieved with the verdict, but we are overwhelmed with sadness that he is no longer with us.”
It only took the jury three hours to convict.

RIP Commander

So grateful Commander Bauer was a very nice man and always had a moment to chat. He didnt deserve what this freak did to him.

Sad we now have to pay for his upkeep, but thrilled the jury made the right decision.

OT. Just got my census info in the mail...remember folks that live in some of our wonderful areas of EP, Mt.Greenwood, etc...When they ask your "ethnicity" be sure to put "African American". These communities seem to get the lionshare of programs, handouts, freebies, etc. So if the government sees an "increase" of certain ethnicities in these areas, perhaps they'll spread some more of that cheese on those crackers! Not only that, but when local and/or fed government tries to paint these areas as 100% white, racist, exclusive enclaves and attempt "forced diversification" through housing projects etc. The community will be able to deflect those accusations by pointing to the increase in minority residents, reported under this census. Afterall... If a man can "identify" as a woman, and according to our "trans" training... one can identify however they "feel that day" and we have to respect that. Well guess what? If I can do my little part to Fuck up the government data mining and possibly get more funds for my "community" while helping my neighborhood appear more inclusive... I, and my family, will "Identify" as African American this time around! They can't (by law) divulge my responses, they can't link it to ME or my household. They can just use the demographics and numbers for their $$ handouts. If you notice the census TV commercials, billboards etc. Not a White Man or Woman to be found among the people depicted... the ads saying it's "important" to respond, to stand up and be counted... Yah important, that's why they're stressing minorities in the commercials. The goal is obvious.

If ever there was a case that screamed for immediately carrying out a sentence, this is it. What's wrong with building a gallows in front of the Thompson Center and carry out the sentence a week after the verdict? The crime, the trial, the sentence, the punishment and most importantly, the lesson, could not be more clearly connected.

I’m not a cop but I was really affected by Commander Bauer’s murder.

I went to the service at Our Lady of the Nativity Catholic Church to pay my respects.

I took a rideshare ride there and got there way earlier, given I misremembered the time of the service as reported in the paper.

I walked in the Church and realized that I was way early. There was virtually nobody in the church. I intuitively took a seat, but as more people started to arrive my better senses took over and I said to myself, “This Church is going to be Wall to Wall brothers and sisters in blue and I’m not taking a spot for someone.” So, I went outside where people were also gathering.

I’ll never for get the weather chill that day; all the people gathered out side the church; and all the police and fire departments from around the country who sent people to pay respect to Commander Bauer.

I also remember the woman handing out Commander Bauer’s Funeral Memorial cards to some of us standing in the street outside the church, as some of us stomped our feet to keep them from going numb from the chill.

I will never ever forget the sound of Commander Bauer’s daughter’s Grace’s voice coming across the loudspeaker, as she read from the Book of Isaiah.

I was astounded by her composure in light of her young age and that she had just lost her father before Valentine’s Day.

I went online afterwards and found video of Grace Bauer reading from the book and I was speechless.

What an amazing young woman.

What an amazing beautiful example of the man Commander Bauer evidently was. I never knew him.

I hope the family will know, I, and many other Chicagoans will never forget he gave his life in service to us.

And, I know I will never forget his young daughter reading those words with such composure while also enduring such grief.

Commander Bauer through his heroic action the day he was taken by evil from his family and his young daughter Grace showed us Love and what is good in the world

Let us never forget that or him.

And let us never forget the sacrifices Chicago police make everyday they go to work.

======

May the blessing of God be upon you ...

May God keep you safe when you are in danger.
May God guide you in the way of Love.
May God support you in danger or hardship.
May God lift up your heart when you are feeling low.
May God comfort you when you are feeling lonely.
May God give you strength when you are weak.
May God bring you home when you are lost.
May God surround you with loving care, always and forever.

From an economics perspective, the death penalty makes sense. Keeping these 'humans' alive is a waste of resources. Mass murderers have no reason to be kept in cages. The CO's don't deserve to deal with lifers and the people on the street need to see immediate results. The reality is that these animals have no place in polite society, and are being used as a tool to bring chaos. Those that champion the rights of the killer, and screw the victims, are no better than the murderers themselves.

The death penalty is a deterrent when it is violent i.e. Electric Chair or Hanging. Not let's wait twenty or thirty years to have the guy lay down on a bed with a pillow and go to sleep. The wait should be no longer than one year and all appeals resolved by then.

The standard sentence for murder is 20 to 60. If it is murder by shooting there is an additional 25 years to life. Murder of a police officer in line of duty is natural life. Reading is a useful skill.

It probably was a very short time. Maybe not 3 minutes. Sometimes juries come to a decision pretty quickly but delay announcing it in order to get the Court to buy lunch.

Where is this "45 year max" coming from? With his record and all the charges that sounds low. A 45 year minimum is more likely.

Thanks to George Ryan Illinois no longer has a death penalty. Also the constant controversy over Jon Burge, not all unwarranted, raised so much ire and scrutiny that it became impossible to get a death penalty sentence in Illinois, much more so out of Chicago.

And there is no money saved with the death penalty. In order to pursue it the State has to provide top legal talent. Plus all the activists with constant appeals run the costs out of sight.

Not like in the 1930s where arrest, trial, conviction and execution were done in about 250 days.

45 years is the minimum sentence. Illinois no longer has good time credit for first degree murder, so 45 years means 45 years. Even if Legghette got 45 years, he’d be doing time until he is 90 (he’s 46 now and he gets credit for the time spent in custody, i.e. a little over one year). The maximum sentence is natural life without the possibility of parole.

This POS will appeal based on ineffective counsel. He will get a free Appellate Defender and the original POS Attorney will be suing the City for excessive force. They will also be suing the Sheriff for making it difficult to have meetings and trial prep because the POS was in another county jail.

This was the plan all along. The POS Attorney is a civil rights Attorney and represented the POS defendant for free. Free, you ask? Yes. The agreement was that he would represent him for a larger piece of the city pie.

Thanks, George Ryan.
