COPA Shooting

  • A man who works for the city agency that investigates allegations of misconduct by Chicago police officers is now under investigation himself after he allegedly fired a handgun at two men while trying to reclaim his stolen car Sunday morning, according to CPD, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), and a source.

Chicago cops heard gunfire near the 1300 block of South Central Park around 5:30 a.m. Sunday and began following a vehicle that was leaving the area of the shots. ShotSpotter gunfire technology reportedly detected three gunshots on that block at the same time.

Police pulled the car over and interviewed the 39-year-old driver. The man, who reportedly works as a COPA investigator and as an auxiliary police officer for a west suburb, is a concealed carry license holder, according to Chicago police.

The COPA employee told police that he saw two people getting into his stolen vehicle on the 1300 block of South Central Park and he fired two shots at the men who then fled in the stolen car, according to a CPD spokesperson. Chicago police detectives are investigating.
When a cop gets arrested or charged or convicted of a crime, every single case he touches is pretty much toast. Look it up. So now, every single investigation by this jackass needs to be tossed out, based solely on the evidence and information at hand.

It's only fair that the same rules apply across the board.

Nothing will happen to him. He is part of the protected class and part of the problem. Speaking of protected. What ever happen to the two police officers who shot the unarmed Hispanic guy in the back as he was running away up the CTA stairwell?

Come to think of it what ever happen to the that Sgt who shot that unarmed kid? Is there a double standard?

A COPA employee fired at a criminal or criminals in defense of property? Insured property and on the public way? 😕 I thought that was a no - no according to them (COPA). He could've recovered his vehicle at a later time and not endanger the citizens of this fine city. I wonder if he'll be stripped or suspended? Oh wait, he's not even a CPD officer... What will become of his career?

So he knew where his stolen car was. Instead of calling police to go secure the vehicle before he goes there as a civilian, he goes all Rambo on the west side to get it back himself. Then as the two yutes get in and drive away, he shoots at them. 1) he should’ve called the police. 2) you can’t shoot at people driving away from you in a stolen car. You fire your weapon in deadly force situations, situations that you fear could result in death or great bodily harm, not because your car is rolling down the street away from you. 3) even if the car is driving at you, Chicago determined a vehicle is not a deadly weapon.
This guy should be fired and charged by the states attorneys office. If you had paid attention in your concealed carry course, you’d know that wasn’t a justifiable situation to shoot. Simple property crime. This imbecile doesn’t even understand when deadly force is allowed even a simple black and white situation like this, but he’s to judge if other people’s use of force was justified? In situations far more complicated? How can he be employed with such a task when he clearly has zero knowledge in regards to use of force? Fire him at minimum, charge him to do the right thing. Which won’t happen. Don’t worry everyone, COPA is investigating, it’s all legit.

As a tax payer and Activists for law and order in Chicago, I am demanding that the COPA investigator be immediately FIRED, and the Head of COPA resign IMMEDIATELY! I also demand the name of the copa investigator who fired warning shots at UNARMED citizens, and want his suburban department to relieve him of his police powers and ability to carry a gun.
I am also demanding that the ISP immediately revoke his CCW permit for firing at UNARMED citizens who posed no threat to his personal safety.

He should have used kind words to ask these young & underprivileged indiciduals to kindly return his car, just like he and his coworkers expect the police to do in such situations. Perhaps they should review the recommendations on cases he has previously reviewed and copy/paste exactly the sort of discipline he recommended of officers who had to make split-second decisions while on duty and in dangerous situations. That would probably be the most fair way to treat him... with his own medicine.

Right there. He needs to be named, in case he slips through the cracks and this event is forgotten. Any officer who has him as an investigator can bring this all up IF we make his name PUBLIC. If he works at copa, he is NOT a true cop, no matter where else he's employed.

Maybe COPA has a different set of rules of engagement. They may have, for all we know, a different policy on use of force from CPD and state law. Let's just wait to see how it turns out....

COPA does have a "use of force" policy for their investigators, right?

Most important question of all, is what were the races of the COPA investigator and the alleged offenders, as we all know that this is the deciding factor in turning it into a media circus.

Considering I was onscene, I can tell you this guy seemed quite level headed and nice. He misspoke by initially saying he didn’t shoot and then said that he actually did. So we would have an investigator at COPA with first hand experience that stress and adrenaline can cause someone to misspeak immediately after an incident. If I had a bullshit investigation, I’d bet my money that he’s probably the best guy COPA has to be reasonable in deciding whether to unfound a complaint or not. Note, he actually said he was shot at first before firing. Context matters.

Aggravated discharge of a firearm? Where is the arrest and charges? Book this guy. He was out looking for his stolen car and then sees two people get into and fires at them with no threat against his own life. The only way he could get away with this is if he was at his home and they broke into his garage and he caught them inside his garage attempting to steal the car. This actually looks really bad for the officers on scene. They could get stripped for "protecting" one of their own since this guy is apparently law-enforcement. Blue code of silence. I hope at least an LT showed up to this scene.

That idiot chief over at COPA Sitney Roberts has a history of hiring idiots, to wit;
Date line January 2019.
An employee of the Civilian Office of Police Accountability has been charged with sending a phony shooting threat to the oversight agency’s West Town office. Alison Yohanna, 35, was charged with official misconduct and disorderly conduct for falsely reporting an offense, Yohanna allegedly sent an email about 9 a.m. Dec. 28 to the city inspector general’s office claiming that another COPA employee would be carrying out a mass shooting at the COPA office in the 1600 block of West Chicago, police said. Yohanna wrote in the email that one of her coworker carries firearms and would commit a mass shooting, starting at the intake room of the COPA offices.
