Maybe you should get involved with the union and you would know that they addressed this issue specifically at last nights general meeting.
Here it is in its simplest explanation: The union immediately inquired on behalf of the membership. City attorneys promised this was NOT a fishing expedition for the rank & file, rather any inquiries they might ultimately make via phone/computer records will focus on transmissions between supervisors assigned to orchestrate the departments response to the riots. In short they want to use any mistakes uncovered as teaching moments to avoid the same mistakes going forward. You know, like in November when Trump is reelected and all the snowflakes start melting again and domestic terrorists begin their rioting anew.
That said, if you were on any scene where some Bosshole fucked up by making the wrong strategic call and you were texting, emailing or FB-ing it like some high school girl you should realistically expect it to be a distinct possibility that the city attorneys might be subpoenaing all these records from your service providers. And even if that is the case, there is a very limited scope of timeframe and content they would look at, and it would have to be specific to the particular incident they might be investigating.
So don’t sweat it, champ. Unless you’re one of the sacrificial lambs involved with the Bobby Rush caper and you texted pix to your friends saying how you pissed in the water reservoir of his coffee maker before you left the scene, you should be all right.

Don't use your personal phone at work for any reason, don't bring your personal phone to work because while on duty, you are paid to do work, not to conduct personal business or make personal calls to pass the time. Do not call from a crime scene, do not receive or send work-related messages, etc.
There is case law that if you are a public employee, and you use your personal device for your work while on duty, then your personal device is subject to scrutiny, can be accessed to see if you have biases, and may be used for impeachment by the defense.

All this - everything on the phone belongs to the nypd and can be viewed anytime the job wants. Also defense lawyers are now given department cell phone materials , so be warned.
