- Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx has ended a tradition among prosecutors in her office she believes might be based on racism and lynching.
For decades, to celebrate a prosecutor’s first guilty verdict from a jury, their necktie would be cut off and placed on an office wall along with a manila folder inked with the names of the prosecutor and defendant. Female attorneys would often cut off a piece of their pantyhose, as was the case with Foxx in 2009.
“I had my pantyhose cut when I did my first jury trial years ago. I never thought about where the tradition came from; had not really thought about it at all other than, ‘This is a rite of passage in the office,” she told the Chicago Sun-Times on Tuesday.
It wasn’t until after she was sworn in as state’s attorney in 2016 that she learned it might be based on a tradition in the South when lynchings of black men were common.
Maybe we're just too educated to get it, but wouldn't cutting a necktie release someone from strangling? It's a harmless tradition THAT SHE PARTICIPATED IN...until some namby-pamby who probably doesn't like wearing a tie and looking professional decided this was his chance to score some Virtue Signalling points. I'd like to see Kim cite a source that connects this long-standing tradition to lynching. She won't find one, except in her own twisted mind. The tradition actually is modeled after the military tradition of pilots having their ties/scarves cut after their first solo flight (their first flight without their trainer sitting behind them yanking on their scarf every time they make a mistake) and signifies a person's elevation from rookie to professional. It's not unique to the SAO, as other professionals such as car salesmen have adopted the practice when they make their first sale, etc.
This is just one more thing on a long list of things Kim has done since she took office to try to paint the CCSAO, and the prosecutors who have dedicated themselves to working there, as racists. Take a look at her "transparent" data portal, for example. It contains no information that actually informs any prosecutorial decisions nor is it in any way helpful to actual examination and reflection regarding where and how there might be room for improvement in the criminal justice system. It just makes it look to the public like ASAs have been prosecuting and seeking sentences based on race, rather than based on the nature and heinousness of the crimes the prosecuted individuals committed.
All the skewed data, the removal of the tie-cutting tradition, etc. is meant to distract from the fact that Kim has done nothing to help reduce crime in Chicago. It creates a false impression of reform and action and makes for great sound bites at all of her speaking engagements (which are intended to further her brand and elevate her status on the national stage). But in reality, crime (including violent crime) is way, way up and ironically the neighborhoods Kim claims to care about are suffering the most since she took office.

Risa cut my tie and made my “trophy”. I have the folder to prove it.
Risa said that no one could take their "Trophies" down in her email (quoted in the contrarian), they were all removed/destroyed per Risa's order, and then Foxx lied to the Sun Times on Tuesday and said that ASAs could retrieve their folders... once this story started to play kind of bad in the media, of course.
