Knowing Your Opponent (UPDATE)

The other day, Sharkey and his minions said (not verbatim) that Groot didn't have the balls to stand up to the teachers and they'd have schools shut down all fall. To prove his point, he called for a House of Delegates meeting to authorize a strike over something we're pretty sure isn't a strike-able action.

Turns out he was 100% correct and Groot caved:
  • Chicago Public Schools students will start the new school year at home next month as officials plan to announce as soon as Wednesday that they’ll back off a proposal that would have put children in classrooms two days a week, sources told the Chicago Sun-Times.

The decision to keep kids at home is an abrupt about-face from city officials who have faced heavy pressure from teachers and parents to go fully remote over health concerns during a pandemic, and who only four days ago asked families to tell CPS whether their children would opt into the district’s in-person plan.

The switch, spearheaded by Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s office, also comes mere hours after the city health commissioner said she was in favor of putting kids in schools with proper health protocols, and that she didn’t believe the risk of spread was significant.
So now - if we're reading this correctly - it's NOT about the science at all. It's about the teachers showing everyone exactly who their bitch is....and it's Groot.

They endorsed Prickwrinkle and lost. They walked out and squeezed an impossible raise out of the City. They kept all their members home AT FULL PAY for half a year and presided over online "attendance" that never topped 50%. And now they've made Groot cancel the entire first quarter of the coming year in complete contradiction of the science. Meanwhile, cops have been working three years and one month without a Contract, Groot disrespects our elected officers, her command staff cancels days off on whims and she's threatening to fire every cop she can for infractions that never even rose to the level of a Reprimand.

It's time for someone to look into pay cuts for the teachers. One quarter out of school means one quarter less supplies expended, one quarter less gas burned driving to work, one quarter less day-to-day expenses for showing up. A one quarter cut in pay seems like a good starting point.

UPDATE: Groot claims she isn't Sharkey's bitch:
  • Union pressure or a coincidence? The mayor said “no” when asked during a news conference this morning whether the decision had anything to do with a threat by the Chicago Teachers Union to walk off the job should schools reopen after Labor Day. But, as my Tribune colleagues noted in a story today, the official announcement comes just a day after word emerged that the CTU was considering calling its governing body, the House of Delegates, to gather and consider a possible strike vote.
But anyone with two brain cells to rub together knows that when Groot could have fired every single teacher on September 08th for job abandonment, she caved.

It's not just the gas that doesn't get burned traveling to school, the more expensive aspect of commuting is the time spent traveling to and from work. So to be fair to taxpayers, each CPS worker MUST be available online or on the phone not only for the amount of regular school hours, but also for the time normally spent commuting.

If they don’t want a class full of kids, fine. They still need to show up to the building and conduct their “zoom” classes from the school building. They can set up their camera in their classroom. They will be the only one in the room so social distancing can be maintained. Their lessons can be monitored by the principals and full workdays can be given to the students they love so dearly. They are getting paid to work. So work.

These CPS teachers are crooks. There is no scientific basis to keep kids out of school. American pediatrics association even said so. But they enjoy getting paid to sit at home and play on a tablet. Gtfo. Fire them and find some liberal numb nut to teach. It's not like CPS teachers are required to perform anyway. They just fill spots. But hey "it's for the children!" LOL I can't wait until the society turns on CPS teachers. Filthy useless crooks.

Loop resident and teacher (though not in CPS anymore) here. Pay cuts for teachers, CPS administrators in schools and at HQ are absolutely worthy of consideration and should be part and parcel of a declaration of bankruptcy for the city. The news posted here yesterday that Midway and possibly also Soldier Field were on the auction block is proof that the city can’t manage its own books, as if we needed more proof. Bankruptcy would of course wipe out and radically reconfigure the pensions for the police and fire as well and as pro-blue as I am, if this city is going to get it’s fiscal house in order, nothing can be off the table. The nuts and bolts of reform plans are never popular but how else is anything going to get done?

There is absolute no way that they have the same staffing needs as normal while working remotely.

Teachers are needed to man the many protests/riots planned: 13 out of 20 protesters arrested recently were teachers.

1) Minneapolis leaked the full bodycam footage of Floyd arrest. All 4 Officers will walk, as they are currently charged.

2) Public will NOT believe the mail-in election results; results certification will be delayed indefinitely by Court challenges.

Riots will be 10x once all that happens as Street Social Justice gets rewarded lately.

Please be gentle on the protesters when manning the lines as many of them are educators.

This is BS!!! Last school year teachers did not teach students. Applications taught students and teachers check to make sure tasks were completed. Teachers only “checked in” with students once or twice a week. 30 min checkins quickly turned into 10 and then 5 min checkins. If students did have to watch a video made by their teacher, then it was previously recorded. If kids are working from home why do they need a gym teacher, music teacher, and foreign language teacher . All of them recorded 1 video a week for the entire school.

What about the school supplies that were unused? Where did they go. We had to buy Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer, tissues, plain and colored paper, etc.... I can use those supplies at home as I teach my kids.

No kids in school.....no full pay checks for teachers!!!!! Where’s my money for teaching my kids?

Sharkey like the Mayor is not from here, nor did they ever attend a Chicago Public School. Sharkey comes off as a spastic Gilbert Gottfried, or Arnold Stang for you older readers, while Larry tries to come off as a Tough Guy, especially when dealing with the Police. However, it is obvious, that Sharkey is the "Butch" and Larry is the Fem in terms of CPS! And the Ripple Effect will further demolish the quality of life and diminish the desire to reside in Chicago. Over the years, a lot of young families have moved to Chicago and begun to use the CPS System. Schools like North Side College Prep and Walter Payton have kids who come from some Middle Class families, where both parents work. The idea of kids having to stay at home and remote learning means that these parents are either going to have to quit their jobs, or hire day care; or look for jobs elsewhere. In addition, the Remote Learning is a Disaster, and Failure! Students are NOT participating, with teachers being told to pass them regardless of their attendance or participation. How can the Third Largest School District in the nation, just abandon attendance without a study or evidence showing that Remote Learning works? Apparently, the Primary Concern of the Chicago Public Schools is appeasement of the CTU, not the Teaching and Development of the city's Youth. "Fly Eyes" is All TALK and nowhere near as Tough as her Talk. She is Ball Less, Clue Less, and Spineless when it comes to dealing with Sharkey! Tens of thousands of kids loose on the streets and CTA, thousands of parents at home because of closed schools; Thank God, there will be a Cure for the virus, the day after Election Week! But our vary way of life as a City will be changed when this is over, and that "Change" will not be for the better! Stay Safe and Strong. Baby "G"

How is CPS going to track the online attendance of all its teachers online especially if the all the kids don't have computers? Who is supervising the overseers? smells like corruption to me therefore a pay cut is in order.

Ethical people pay attention to the moral compass of people in positions of authority especially teachers and Mayor Lightfoot. But it seems like the moral integrity of these leaders is as flexible as an Olympic gymnast putting on a gold medal performance.

It seems that CPS, CTU, and Mayor Lightfoot wouldn't recognize the truth if it landed on them but they sure know what's like to be self-serving LIFE SUCKING entities.

For CPD officers that insist on sticking it out for 20 years do it and get out but if you just got on the job in the last 5 years, think about it very carefully and make an informed decision. But for God's sake don't do 30 years unless you have a death wish, just don't do it no matter what.

That is three semesters for the kids with remote learning, or shall I say, no actual learning. The private and Catholic schools are going back so lets see how that works and if the public teachers are embarrassed. I wonder if the Governor will make an attempt to shut down the private and Catholic schools claiming that it is dangerous but with the actual mission to help the unions? But, not to worry, I don't think our Chicago kids learn much even if they are in the classroom

Put some of this on Governor Fred Flintstone, he helped Sharkey by cancelling all Fall Sports in Illinois High Schools. Look for a move out of families who have kids involved in Fall Sports. Families are looking to rent or buy places in Wisconsin, Indiana, even Florida so their kids can play sports.

“ It's time for someone to look into pay cuts for the teachers...A one quarter cut in pay seems like a good starting point.” -(SCC at 12:04 AM on Aug 5, 2020)

- exacting what I thought when I heard this. 25% cut isn’t enough for a tax bill (due 2 days ago) that takes 55% chunk of the payment.
There’s no mention of Operating expenses for CPS that have been reduced since they Closed the buildings. What is the CPS Executive HQ doing ? Operations Costs are based on a formula: 5 days/week, 10 hr/day, 50 wks/yr, 2500 hrs total.
The Skrool Budget goes on, open or not. Are the invoices for textbooks, food, supplies, equipment, cleaning, building repairs, busing transportation, etc, etc, etc. still getting paid? Gas, electric, phone, cable tv, pest control, HVAC maintenance - you name it, are these items still paid?

Depending on who’s doing the counting:
640 public schools
360,000 students (dwindling in grade levels and in enrollment)
22,000 teachers
37,000 staffers
Plus a bloated HQ admin staff

- CPS gets 55% of TIF Fund surpluses. City gets 24% for operations and remaining to various other programs.
- CPS has a $8 Billion budget, utilizes $900 million for Operating expenses, not sure how much for Capital expenditures.
- CPS paying out $7 billion for wage and benefits?
- CPS puts more into the Pension than the cost per student cost due to mismanagement, waste and regulations.

Does anyone know if all those reduced class size demanded teacher aids, nurses, social workers ($100 million increase) that were negotiated into the Contract are getting StayAtHome pay too?

Schools been Closed since Mar 17th 20 weeks so far and their Demand will extend this StayAtHome another 20 weeks or longer, around 8 to 9 months after the holidays or beyond...That’s A School Year.

25% should be a Minimum rebate of our tax bills, even for those who don’t have children using public schools for babysitter services.

Keep them Home and let parents know what little monsters their children can become. The Non parenting type will give in immediately and tell their "chllin'" to go outside, cuz I already got's me some high blood...and I don't have time for that. Then it's out to the street for murder and mayhem. The decent parents will persevere and overcome their child's wild tendencies and keep them properly home schooled. As it should be.
Our urban schools have become juvenile delinquent monitoring facilities. Teachers are more security guards than teachers now. We spend more money for Dumber kids. It's time to scale back a bit here, and reap the rewards of that failure known as the Public School System. It;s time we change our mantra from :it's all for the children" to "it's all because of the children" (and their parents)

Why the city gave in to the CTU again is beyond me. Let them strike. Either way the kids are going to be at home. Let them picket at empty schools and downtown which is a ghost town. Let them go without pay and benefits. CPS could easily hire a few individuals to adminster online learning, which only has a fifty percent attendance rate anyway. As usual though the city caves and the CTU wins.

8am-9am Section 1: English Language Arts.
9am-10am Section 2: Mathematics.
10am-11am Section 3: Science.
11am-12pm Section 4: Social Science.
LUNCH BREAK
12:30-1:30pm Section 5: World Language.
1:3--2:30pm Section 6: Fine Arts.
2:30-3:30pm Section 7: Career ed /Financial education, etc.

THE REST OF TEACHERS CAN BE IN NO PAY STATUS UNTIL SCHOOLS FULLY RE-OPEN. (like everyone else they can apply for unemployment benefits).
ALL closed school building can be overseen by 2 building engineers (1 daytime/1 nightime).
Any maintenance required will be called in thus no full time maintenance personnel required.

So in other words, the kids have a very extended summer break. How disciplined are they to sit at home with a tablet and be taught as they cannot sit in school and be taught ? You think momma or grandma are going to make sure their kids sit still at home when the streets are calling them to go out ? There will be just an increase of teenage killings.
You think those teachers really care ? When most are failing the teachers will be forced to give them passing grades anyway. That’s what the do. They don’t want to look bad. The miserable failing cycle continues.

Right now CTU & teachers think they are so smart. What they’ve actually opened the door for is the future elimination of public school teachers. Like robots in factories, self-driving trucks, etc, eventually politicians will figure out the learning rate (in CPS kids are all pushed thru now even with IN CLASS ) is the same. Additionally, since standardized tests/SATs/ACTs etc are on the way out as a means to lower standards in the name of diversity, in classroom learning will be a thing of the past, to the extent it is now. Parents able to- will take their kids out & enroll in traditional private schools. Since we are broke, politicians looking to rid themselves of the burdens of pensions & maintenance of aging schools, will sell off school properties to the connected (if that property is worth anything). A school district could easily hire an outside firm to create standardized curriculum for every grade level. The city may even consider giving parents a little $ back in their wallets. I’d gather this teaching could easily be conducted by 1/2 the number of teachers. Lower wage jobs, like test graders & on-line attendance monitors, will easily replace quite a few teaching positions.

BEWARE CPS TEACHERS: unless you’re close to retirement, you may no longer be needed in the very near future. When you sleep with dogs, you get fleas.

The BGA’s requests sought records related to the discovery of lead in the drinking water at Chicago Public Schools (CPS). Defendants appeal from an order of the circuit court directing them to inquire whether relevant records exist in certain of their officials’ personal text messages and e-mail accounts. Defendants primarily argue that these communications are not subject to FOIA because they lack the requisite nexus to a public body.

They will milk that for all it’s worth and be home til after the new year. In January they will claim it’s still too dangerous and stay home til spring break, then claim spring breakers could still be spreading the virus and probably come up with som BS about the vaccine(if it’s out by then) not being effective and not wanting to take any chances.

After a whole year of at home schooling, they will declare it is the new way forward and the city will see dollar signs for all the school buildings they can close and sell and not spend money on heating, cooling, and keeping the lights on.

Virtual school will be in session forever! And the graduation rates will be through the roof!

Our first order of business should be to change the “ no strike” clause in our contract. That would be the difference maker for us. Teachers get what they demand because of it .

The no strike clause isn't part of our contract, it is actually a Federal Law. Police and Fire are considered essential employees. Right after CFD went on strike back in the 80's all the politicians got together and had this law placed on the federal charges to eliminate police and fire to be able to strike. We can thank all the greedy politicians from the past for putting us in such a terrible position.

I have friend that works in their union hq. He told me weeks ago that school would not be in session. The radicals in their hq are doing groots bidding by refusing to work intentionally so they can close all the schools to steal election in November. Schools and churches are where people vote and if there closed then they can force mail in voting on us all. Then they control the elections and cheat by disqualifying most of people’s votes that are republican. There scared dems will loose there extremist lefties through out Illinois since everyone with half a brain has figured out the criminals are in charge of Chicago and the county. Same reason goes for churches, keep them closed thru election so no one can vote there. That’s why we can fly on airplane, shop at Costco, but churches are somehow closed. Also the mayor is letting extremist lefties know exactly what she is doing nationwide by using her voice as dog whistler saying “schools will be closed until end of November” meaning their doing it to try and steal elections to demolish anything that’s left that resembles America. Officers need to step up and be election judges for what now they call the polls but come Election Day will be opening envelopes for mail in voting then entering them in machine. If we do this we can help by making it harder to cheat. If no one steps up for the day or two to count votes were fu$ked. The mayor and her cronies at cps are smarter then people think and highly motivated. Tell family members to volunteer for elections if you can’t!

I think SCC's suggestion of a 25 percent salary reduction is fair. I don't hate the public schools, and went all the way through another big-city public school system that some people don't like. I do think remote learning is the correct choice right now, but then CPS employees need to make some concessions too. The teachers should feel free to report to work in clean, empty classrooms if they choose, a suggestion I've seen here.

My guess is that when some of the private schools start getting virus cases, they too will discontinue in-person classes.

One thing I wanted to mention: a while ago a police officer on one of the threads offered to teach any K-8 class in any Chicago school. I thought that was a very generous offer.
