- Students marched and chanted for hours Saturday on the campus of the University of Chicago and in the nearby Hyde Park and Kenwood neighborhoods.
Protesters called for defunding the university police force, and funding more student programs.
Students occupied a portion of the street near 49th and Greenwood in the Kenwood neighborhood, outside the provost’s home. Students said they planned to stay until they get a public meeting addressing their concerns.
Hundreds of people, mostly students and young adults, marched around the university campus and surrounding neighborhoods. They called on the school to disarm University of Chicago Police Department officers, disclose the department’s budget, reduce funding by 50%, and ultimately abolish the force by 2022.

Young idealistic students want to save the world and to fit in with the groups so they find causes to engage in. Over the years the conservatives did nothing to invest their values and viewpoints into the colleges and universities. Sure they invested monetarily in their endowments but that’s about it. So there was a void and who creeped in but the Left. Many were socialists and some were communists. So now we have students being swayed by these “great thinkers”. The norm now is a radical left approach and if you don’t agree you are ostracized. These institutions were created to encourage free thinking with a wealth of different ideas. But not now, there is no freedom of speech. The pressure on the students is so great that they will believe in what’s fed to them rather to question it and examine all the evidence around them.

Former UCPD here - President Zimmer is no idiot, he understands what surrounds his school. Mommy and Daddy aren’t paying 60+k to have their children be preyed upon by the criminals. Having their own private department is selling point to prospective students. University police are necessary in an area where only one CPD beat (234) covers the main campus.
However, I’ll give the students credit for one thing; they’ve been looking to abolish their school’s police department well before the “defund the police” movement took off. If Zimmer resigns anytime soon, or some other liberal voice gets in the trustees ears, I’d be worried about them cutting funds. You see with Portland and NYC these liberal mayors don’t care what violence results from their actions, they’ll never backtrack from their anti police positions as their cities fall apart.
Hyde Park is one of two safe majority black neighborhoods in Chicago. Pill Hill is the only other one. Hyde park is large, Pill Hill is tiny. The only reason that the U of C is a safe neighborhood is because they made it that way, all the way back in the 1950's, on purpose. During the Richard J Daley administration there was a high profile crime on the midway involving I believe the wife of a U of C professor. U of C threatened to decamp for the western burbs and Daley began a massive slum clearance program. Look at Hyde Park population numbers between 1960 and 1970. Black population dropped by about 40 percent.
The slum clearance was absolutely necessary to keep the U of C which after the steel mills closed is now the largest private employer on the south side.
Some of the wags that started the Second City Comedy empire referred to Hyde Park as "whites and blacks united together against the lower classes." In the intervening decades the black population of Hyde Park has continued to decline as it has in most of the south and west sides. Asian population has gone way up as has the hispanic. Whites now a near majority in Hyde Park.
The blacks living in Hyde Park often have direct ties to the University as the University offers subsidies to any employee who buys a property within a certain radius. The crime in the neighborhood is largely committed by outsiders from Woodlawn and Englewood. The days of native Hyde Park gangbangers are largely gone.

If you've ever been around the campus in the afternoon it resembles a Chicago High School at the end of the school day with the number of cops around.
The department is absolutely necessary to the vitality of Hyde Park and the University knows it as do most of the long term residents.
A small, but vocal contingent of teachers and students disagree. They were out in force a few years back when the UCPD cop shot a mentally ill student who was advancing on him in homemade goofy body armor and a good sized metal pipe.
This is some of the best video of a police shooting I've ever seen and thankfully the UCPD cop only fired one round. Video also demonstrates that the cop tried to deescalate and retreated. It also shows that the student was having some kind of manic psychological breakdown. Two and a half years later and the case still hasn't been resolved.

This is why I brought all of my kids to Chicago and toured the southside to show them the sights. They now understand my decision to live in a boring, small town. They attend a small state college in a nearby small city with an excellent reputation for under 40k for all four years with grants and scholarships. College isn't expensive when you don't have to pay for a massive campus police force and a BS reputation that means nothing in the real world anymore. Hyde Parkers realize the importance of the U of C Police Dept. The Dept. Protects the residents AND university students and employees. If the demonstrators don’t like the U of C Police, then they should move to Pullman.
I worked a beat car in Hyde Park in the late 60's and again in the mid 80's. As I recall there was a sergeant and 5 one man cars from 47th st to 61 st. That never was enough to contain the crime there. I lived in Hyde Park for 2 years in the early 70's. There were 3 murders on my BLOCK during that time. I moved. Without the University police Hyde Park would be unlivable. That area is surrounded by predators . Sen. Braun was robbed as she walked down the street. I found the University police to be pretty good, a pain in the ass at times, but glad we had them. They carried zone radios in their cars besides the college radio. Many times the professors and students would call the school cops rather then us. OK with me. The school knows this and they will never allow their police to be eliminated
As a University of Chicago alum I feel I must weigh in. Any reduction in the UCPD is clearly insanity. I want to thank all the members of the UCPD for keeping me safe during my years as a student there. I remember a friend saying that the university was surrounded on three sides by ghetto and one side by lake. Each day I had to run the Garfield Blvd gauntlet from I94 to the campus and I would breath a sigh of relief once I crossed onto campus property.
Even in my day this idiocy was there. In those days it was anti-Reagan, anti-CIA recruiters on campus, anti-Allan Bloom (the professor who wrote "The Closing of the American Mind") and pro-Marxists like Mandela and Tutu. The "Divest from South Africa" was in full swing. But in those days we had Hanna Grey as president and she would not cave to those imbeciles.
I'm not sure whether the current administration has the balls that Hanna had. They did cave to becoming a Level I adult trauma center once again. Those uninsured gang members must be draining huge quantities of money from the hospital. But, on the bright side, if they do reduce the police force those little SJWs will be happy to have a trauma center right down the street. They will certainly need it when the barbarians move in and they get a taste of what "social justice" really means on the streets, as opposed to in their ivory towers.

When the Obama Library, and I use that term loosely since there will be only electronic documents there, is built, many people will go there. The CTA El stop on Garfield Blvd will be a prime stop for tourists. I am sure they will have lots of security at that stop, for if they did not, many tourists will get an ugly surprise when riding that line and trying to exit there and walk to the library.

Paying big bucks, and I mean big bucks, to attend an urban university is a real dumb idea. It seems most of these institutions of higher education are surrounded by wild jungle where the residents venture onto campus now and then and create mayhem. I recall when some Illinois Institute of Technology students decided to venture down 35th St heading East in their quest for food and drink. Believe me, that did not end well for those students. The same goes for the U of C , DePaul, Loyola and in many cases the U of I Chicago campus.Without the police these schools would be overrun.

A friend of mine attended U of C in the 80s.
He said that, because of the overlapping jurisdictions, it was the most heavily-policed neighborhood in the nation and the response time to someone triggering one of the police call stations on campus averaged 30 seconds.
Don't know if either of those statements are still true today but, I know from the times I visited his brownstone in Hyde Park, it sure as hell was true back then.
There is a missing voice in this conversation: the parents. If there was any less policing at U of C, I would pull my freshman daughter out the next day and send her elsewhere. The campus is an island. If any kid wants to feel the what less policing would be like, they can wander off campus. The kids are told, many times, not to wander off of campus. Only kids with a death wish would ignore that advice.

Let me tell you something. UCPD officers are the best. They knew we were defenseless eggheads and did their best to keep the neighborhood safe. Those kids arguing to defund are morons. This will get NO traction. You will find no more pro-UCPD group than U of C alums. Every one of us has a story of how UCPD saved our skins, either directly with almost instantaneous response times when we needed help or just by being about the only friendly faces on campus. (U of C has a deserved reputation as a place where "fun goes to die.)

Mine got a free ride thanks to the US Government. Even then I had to occasionally explain that their friends with liberal arts degrees, and no job prospects were not 'Brave' because of it. Very simple; STEM degree or work. Even a full ride scholarship is not free, as there are opportunity costs; i.e. the wages foregone by not working. One school I would never bother with is UC. I know their system and it's corrosive to put it mildly. And a UC degree holder will still end up pissed off at life, as getting rich is not an option.
In UC one has the poor little rich kids getting their BS/BAs and then the poor, broke grad students trying to avoid a real job. The deal is the first year, fellowships cover every thing. The next year, only a select few get that full ride, with most being scaled back to 50%. And so on. Therefore, grad students are always trying to stab each other in the back and sabotaging research. The library is constantly having to replace books that have pages torn out by aspiring "Academics". With this background we can understand just how warped the UC graduate is by the time their Piled Higher and Deeper is 'earned'. Think 'Mean Girls' in a rainbow setting.
