New SWAT Policy?
Donnell Gardner had a basketball game to watch. But the outreach worker with the Chicago CRED anti-violence program was busy Friday night helping Chicago police officers negotiate with a man holed up in a home in the Roseland neighborhood on the Far South Side.
He kept texting the man, encouraging him to surrender and telling him he didn’t want him to die in a shootout. Finally, Gardner found a way to get through to the man. He texted: “I’m trying to watch the Lakers game, come on out.”
And the man walked out with his hands in his air.
He probably came out because he couldn't believe anyone was actually watching the NBA any more. Did you see the ratings this season? Down 51% from last year. When Jordan was in the Finals, 33 MILLION people were watching. Now they can't break six million on a weekend night with nothing else on.
We had a few questions about using a multiple-convicted felon to negotiate with a barricaded subject, but the results seem to be positive. And certainly, in this environment, it's better than gassing and shooting a non-compliant subject, so there's that. Odd times call for odd solutions.

Professional basketball has the potential to solve all the problems of the inner city.
It's not just in Chicago. The whole "kinder, gentler SWAT" movement is spreading. No doubt it'll be as effective as the “No Vehicle Pursuit” policy. Why should the bad guys surrender if the cops will give up first?

Colorado SWAT Leaves Standoff to ‘Avoid Unnecessary Confrontation’
Agency officials said the community has made it “very clear” it wants a different police response when “there is a possibility of using serious force”

AURORA, Colo. — A SWAT team engaged in an armed standoff last month decided to walk away, leaving the suspect behind, after four hours, according to CBS4. An agency spokesperson cited a desire to “avoid unnecessary confrontation.”
The encounter unfolded September 24 when officers surrounded the home of 39-year-old Eric Burns, who was being investigated for felony child abuse, officials told CBS4. Burns was wanted on a misdemeanor domestic violence warrant out of Denver. Police later learned he was also wanted for a felony kidnapping warrant.
The SWAT team was on the scene for hours, negotiating with Burns to surrender. Authorities said they believed Burns was armed. Burns eventually released his 6-year-old daughter but refused to give himself up. After about four hours, there was a “decision made to vacate,” according to a police report obtained by CBS4.

Sounds like the SWAT Team did an excellent job of thinking outside of the box to bring this incident to a successful conclusion. Great job!

Why do we even need SWAT anymore?
70 miles south of Aurora, in solid red Colorado Springs, this never would have happened. Aurora is a ghetto with weak leadership. They built the billion-dollar over budget, years late VA there just so they could stock it with ghetto bred affirmative action hires, it is the only part of the state where enough low-grade buffoons can be found to man the desks to screw over Vets.
The best outcome is no one gets hurt. Does not matter much how it got accomplished.
The only reason to watch an NBA game is to make a list of the sponsors so you can tell them why you won’t be using their products or services henceforth.

Was there an NBA this year? I bet the NBA games were big in China. I missed seeing all the "Chinese lives matter" shirts, though.
Off topic, but my favorite Biden line in the town hall tonight went something like "instead of shoot to kill, the police can just shoot them in the leg." I am surprised he didn't add, "More time at the range, and maybe, just shoot the gun out of the killer's hand. Matt Dillon could do it." So clueless it's laughable.
If it turned south and guy killed himself, people would have been critical of coppers using a person who most likely has no experience in negotiating with a suicidal man.
