For schools that are currently closed and unlikely to open this year:
Ventilation and air quality in the vast majority of Chicago Public Schools classrooms have been deemed safe for students and staff after district-wide inspections in recent weeks, officials said this week.
In an effort to prove its buildings can safely welcome back thousands of people during the ongoing pandemic, the school system said it conducted its own internal examinations of ventilation systems at all 500-plus district run schools and hired an outside, independent inspector to take air quality samples at those facilities.

Every city building I ever worked in smelled of mold and had the usual filth and funk that police stations usually smell of. I have no faith the city can muster up the resolve to fix this. It took years of OSHA complaints in one area to get any results. If the city does spend the money, I'm willing to bet that they will buy "portable" air purifier units from some connected vendor, and hire a union electrician to bring one to each classroom and plug it in at union cost. Then a privately contracted custodian (probably with a criminal record) will spray some cheap disinfectant around on a daily basis and mask the moldy smells emanating from the building. The cheap portable units will begin crapping out and never be repaired. They will end up in an unused room in a pile of used and defunct equipment.
Ask me how I know...
It seems that some, who knows how many, teachers are conducting remote classes not only from outside the City of Chicago, but from out of state and some from out of the country. No wonder they do not want to return to the classroom. Wow! 2 hours a day on their computer and the rest of the time a paid vacation. Teachers should be conducting these e-learning from inside the school ! But, CTU is a socialist bully and the mayor is certainly afraid of them. I work part-time at a private grade school. It has in-person learning 5 days a week. The school follows the recommended guidelines scrupulously and thus far, there have been no outbreaks of Covid-19.
My children have been withdrawn from CPS because of the CTU. My children attend a private grade school (not the same one that I work). The school my children attend also follows the recommended guidelines scrupulously and thus far, there have been no outbreaks of Covid-19.
Neither school has the vast resources that does CPS and yet are cable of safely teaching.

I am a 19 years old with a 14 year old sister in CPS because she has autism and CPS is able to provide extra help she needs. She needs actual classroom instruction and a structured schedule in order to really learn. She isn't learning anything over zoom. Both my parents work and I am away at college so I can't work with her. Selfish for CPS so not even try and do a hybrid schedule like the private schools!

I early voted on Oct 28th and did it on computer screen. Had a relative on southeast side, two relatives on southwest side and several north side coworkers say they were all given paper ballots on Election Day and the sharpies bleed thru the ballot. All said it looked like the paper almost broke were the sharpie was used. None of them voted for every office like Water Reclamation and were told their ballot was an under count when feed into machine. That happens every time I vote. You just wonder if Chicago Election Commission saw the early vote numbers in certain wards in the city and started playing games.
Off topic: Commanders bitching that activity is low, who gives a fuck...you want the Officers to get exposed to Covid? There is a second wave and it is stronger. We don't know where these pices of shit have been. We will still respond to service calls or Officer assist calls but don't expect anymore beyond that. Busses that were sitting at the academy last weekend had several officers that were infected. Several officers that were sitting on those busses tested positive. yet no word and those officers infected how many they came in contact with? Same at South shore for training, po's came ARE SICK, tested positive for covid and no deep cleaning was done, no quarantining, and training continues with no regard for the health or well being of police officers.... everyone social distance, stay at home , dont come to work if you feel sick or test positive, BUT IF YOU'RE THE POLICE.... Once again, the FOP should take on the teachers. Right now is the time to demand a vouchers. Your tax for your child's education should follow the child not the school district. Your tax voucher for your child's education should be able to be used at any school in the district public or private as long as they are certified program. The teachers are not providing adequate education and many of the private schools are back in school. Also, with all the animosity towards the police your children may be in jeapordy. Could they be targeted by other students or hostile towards the child because of his parents education. Something to think about. JCat you want to ruffle feathers find out how much officers pay in property tax towards Board of Education you have all the members information and poll membership to determine if a political push for vouchers is a viable option.

Thank God my day off is cancelled so that the community safety teams can do narcotics surveillance in my district and lock up a juvenile for a couple of baggies. It only took about 8 of them to lock up one kid. Great job! You must be proud.

Monumental waste of time. "It's all for the children" because the CPS Union use them for shorter work weeks, higher salaries and anything else they can sell the mayor and citizens. Highest salaries and lowest test scores and more on street violence. No 12 hour days, cancelled days off and changing shifts. Just collect the money on a full year vacation.

Lightfoot wasted all that money!! The air tests at CPS are invalid, virtually worthless. They were conducted on empty, unoccupied buildings. No Covid-19 in an empty building tells nothing about what happens when people sick but no symptoms are around other people all day. A super-spreader could infect dozens or even hundreds of kids who unknowingly infect parents and grandparents.

If that were actually true, we wouldn't have many problems.
Given the contracting procedures that exist for any city building project it is doubtful that the ventilation systems in any school building are adequate to remove covid droplets from the highly recirculated air. Probably at best all it can do is turn the droplets into aerosols and make the situation worse. Putting air filters in the classroom is probably about the best you can do to reduce the chance of serious outbreaks of the disease.
Given how infectious this disease is it's almost inevitable that if it takes hold in any building you're not going to be able to stop it very easily short of emptying the building for a couple of weeks and quarantining those who have the disease or have been exposed.
On the other hand most people that get the disease get a very mild case, or don't even know they have it.
It's a pretty good bet that many of the parents of CPS students are not going to follow the rules that would otherwise protect people from the disease.
I can't say I really blame the teachers for not wanting to go back to that kind of situation. Many of them are at risk, while the children aren't much at risk. But the children can still spread the disease to the teachers and staff.
I don't think there's a good answer to this problem. My personal opinion is the best thing you can do is have a mixture of in-person and remote learning, with a heavy emphasis on the remote learning. That way you can reduce the risk as much as you can.

Uh...I saw these lights in Catholic grade schools, probably put in during mid-50s polio time. The teacher switched these on on her way out of the room at the end of class, soaked empty classroom real good.

Vouchers your tax money following your child to a school of your choice the only way to get better teaching. Board of Ed. And CTU would have to compete with private and parochial schools for tax dollars. Right now your tax dollars are dedicated to the Board of Ed. If you think that is the way you want ypur tax dollars spent thats OK. But I am sure if manyj were given the choice and could get a break.on private school tuition they would support vouchers.
Most of our taxes go to CPS, I bet everyone can't wait to get that big refund check since they aren't fully staffed and operational!!!!!
