More Taxes

Has anyone seen a single proposal to cut spending? Besides the one where they defund the CPD and everything becomes rainbows and unicorns. Because this is getting seriously dumb:

  • An alderman introduced a plan Monday to tax deliveries by companies, such as Amazon, as the City Council also capped fees third-party delivery services charge pandemic-stricken restaurants and teed up Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s 2020 budget for a Tuesday vote.

Bridgeport Ald. Patrick Daley Thompson wants to charge an additional $1.25 for packages delivered by ground to addresses in the city that weigh 50 pounds or less, and $2.50 for heavier deliveries. Prescription medicine and food deliveries from restaurants would be exempted from the extra tax under Thompson’s plan.

Ruin businesses across the city, county and state, then raise taxes when everyone is sitting home not working and not getting paid. At least those not working for the government aren't getting paid.

I saw this, I’m actually shocked that someone could come up with such a half-assed ridiculous proposal. You motherfuckers better vote this asshole out come next election. I already pay taxes on my purchases, now you want to tax a delivery? Fuck off, people will just continue to put for sale signs up. Pardon my language, but just when I thought this city couldn’t get any worse, they proved me wrong. What a bunch of buttmunchers.

This is a tax I can support.

Why?

I am tired of navigating past double parked FEDEX, UPS, PRime, etc vehicles. I know I could write them a ticket but I fear the drivers not the company would be on the hook.

Then I look in the alley and see the recycle can overflowing with cardboard boxes. Some how I feel the City is losing out on revenue destroying this garbage.

Again I love this tax!

And if you’re not a cop I suppose you paid into social security or better yet - an employer matched 401k- well your employer made good on their end of the deal. The city hasn’t made good- especially when it comes to police pensions. I’ve paid my share for 30 years and also have saved outside of my pension. Does that mean I should get screwed out of my pension (by the way we don’t get SSI) because the city thought they could spend my money however they wanted? As for fat pensions- talk to the teacher’s Union who got a fatter raise than anyone & still only pay 2% into it- meanwhile the taxpayer picks up the tab. Ask yourself why teaching positions aren’t being eliminated despite declining CPS enrollment. Also talk to any state politician who allows all sorts of big money patronage non-government “contractors” to collect out of those pension funds. That’s why Illinois & Chicago are in trouble. By the way, after about 30 years on the job, my pension will be just enough to keep my head above water in this city & county. My pension won’t be fat. The fat pensions are the exempt ranks (which need to be slashed in half) & the clouted and connected jobs. Why Illinois - especially Chicago loses a lot of pension dollars back into the economy is because they tax the fuck out of everything.

Not a tax, it’s not a tax. It’s a surcharge or fee. Like your water bill and city sticker, it’s not deductible for chump residents and taxpayers can’t recoup, write off or claim these forms of gubmint assessments. Larri found $$$ in the Trump Energy Independent Economy’s low gasoline prices, as did JB Porkchops, those will steadily rise until they outlaw the gasoline engine. Look for a local sales tax coming by 2022, that’ll help get downtown retail to recover and back on track, huh?

Gee Wally, does that mean Corporate giants that already get massive write offs and state/local tax incentives might raise their subscriptions and merchandise costs too? And how will this affect the failing USPS and their bailout? Do USPS rates get a substantial bump too? Gotta wonder the accounting method IL uses to collect sales tax from eBay and other online sellers. I imagine if they can electronically tally election votes using a computer program, they can get legitimate revenues collected too.

No, they won’t trouble Amazon with demands to pay more of their “fair share” but will certainly expect to nickel and dime taxpayers and consumers to foot the bill for all the City’s waste and fraud spending.

Another Not-Too-Sharp Daley in the basket, perhaps the last one we can only hope.
And by the way, is his middle name Daley or do’ he hyphenate it like a girl?

You have had the ability within your lifetime to move to a location where they are no longer offering public pensions, but it sounds like you have chosen not to. These were benefits offered as a condition of employment, and part of the reason I chose my profession. I would say that you’ve also had the ability to apply for a career which offers a public pension, but have chosen not to. Also, “you’re” not funding my pension. Portions of your taxes may pay my pension, but I’ve contributed just under 10% of my salary from day one towards my pension, and I also pay property taxes and all the other taxes I’m sure you pay as well. I also don't qualify for Social Security as we’re not allowed to contribute. I also have worked midnights, and afternoons throughout my career, not a 9-5, and I am almost always working weekends. Don’t forget all the holidays that I’ve missed throughout my career that you’ve enjoyed with your family. You’re probably thinking, you chose to be the police with those hours, and while you’re correct, I did it because the pension was the promise for my sacrifice.

Also, why do I have to pay for Chicago Public Schools when I refuse to send my children there? We can’t pick and choose which services we pay for.

Generous? It’s not enough for the shit we put up with. I contribute 33% to the city’s 66% they are “supposed” to put into the pension fund. And on top of that, I’m hit with all the same taxes that you pay.

When I was hired over a quarter of a century ago, the city told me I would get a pension, and I planned accordingly. What am I to do? They screwed me out of my social security with the Windfall Elimination Tax, after I paid into S.S. for 16 years prior to coming on this job. Is it my fault that money that should have been put in our pension fund was instead used to buy votes of the permanent unemployed residents of south and west sides, and illegal aliens? Is it my fault pension money was used for politicians pet projects, or it was lost on bad investments by connected Daley clan members?
Maybe you should plan on living in a more fiscally responsible town free of political corruption.

Let this be the new battlecry for 2021 and take the focus away from the spotlight on the actions of law enforcement as an excuse to focus on the real problems at hand. If you look at the history of politics in chicago, the number of aldermen were actually reduced in half during the 1800s. What this process entails and how to get the ball rolling during these times is another story. Any ideas?

So does the proposed delivery tax occur if one gets items shipped... to Amazon Lockers?

I smell some lawsuits from trigger happy lawyers. If there is no delivery to the home involved, why pay the tax? That is a PICK UP in that case. If that is a two tier system (Amazon locker vs to your porch) then that is not equal protection on consumers and not fair under various tax standards. Some lawyers will get as rich as the tax collectors will! Then the city will have to shell out to the lawyers and plaintiffs via settlement or verdict against the city and then need more money to cover that loss per the pay out...

Fuck the greedy city... Can't these idiots come up with 'fixes' other then raising taxes?
