Fresh off spending $58 million of his fortune in a losing effort to pass a graduated-rate income tax, a frustrated Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker on Wednesday said “painful” budget cuts are coming and suggested an attempt to raise taxes could come as soon as two weeks.
Pritzker lashed out at Republicans, business groups and Ken Griffin, Illinois’ richest man, accusing opponents of distorting the truth about what the amendment would have done.
“There will be cuts, and they will be painful,” Pritzker said Wednesday at his daily coronavirus briefing. “And the worst thing is, the same billionaires who lied to you about the ‘fair tax’ are more than happy to hurt our public schools, shake the foundations of our cities, and diminish our state. Maybe because they think it won’t hurt them.”
Here's a clue Porkie - it won't hurt them at all. Maybe you've never handled money - being a billionaire that's probably beneath you and you have people for that.
Billionaires and millionaires and even thousandaires like us, we like to pay less taxes, so we shelter as much of it as we can from you greedy pricks. The avenues available for the rich and ultra-rich to shelter money is way more than what's available to us. Griffin and Rauner probably pay less percentage wise than we do, but it still adds up to millions of dollars.
The big liar here is you - because once the rich people hide their money, it falls on the working middle class to make up your shortfalls. And you know what? When someone has a spending and debt problem, the last fucking thing you do is give them (A) money, (B) a line of credit or (C) unfettered access to our wallets.
How about cutting fucking spending? We haven't seen one proposal to do that until now. In fact, we can name (literally) thousands of city, county and state employees who have been sitting home, receiving paychecks, doing absolutely nothing.
And don't even get us started on the CPS/CTU criminal enterprise.

In 2019 he reported he earned 31 million dollars on his 3.4 billion dollars and paid a little over 5 million in taxes. He is claiming he made less than 1% on his wealth?

Interesting how JB blames Republicans and Special Interest groups for the "Fair Tax" failure. However, he will never mention that Democrats have controlled the legislature for years and their uncontrolled spending has only added greatly to the burden.
It's already been printed here but we know the middle class are the ones who support the nation and states. Once the wealthy have taken advantage of all the benefits that tax codes afford them, and I would bet JB's accountants and financial advisors know them all, the burden to fund government would fall on the middle class. It would have been just a matter of time before the middle class would have been unfairly taxed so politicians can make themselves look good and continue their penchant for uncontrolled spending.
A large detail left off of the "fair tax" discussion is how much of a "cut" people really get. With the two proposed rate reductions of .20 and .05, the maximum "cut" for someone falling within the 100k bracket is $65. It is far from a cut and the fact they call that a cut is purely political in nature.
Worked on a long project with Village of Glenview officials and was SHOCKED by both their salaries and their perks. They all had benefit packages worthy a Fortune 100 CEO. Take-home SUVs, free gas, free meals, credit card, even "free babysitting" for a female Dept head. Village manager also had housing allowance and so-called "contract for life" provision where he was paid whether he remained at Glenview or not. And don't forget the golden pensions. I bet 90% of Glenview voters had no idea how indulged their village Dept heads were/are. All at taxpayers' expense, with a big shot of resulting municipal overlord haughtiness too. I was appalled, and yet knew same dynamic exists at many large cities and many suburbs too.
And all this beneficence is supposed to be accepted by voters, who are told "this is what's expected" and annual budget increases automatically occur, year after year, as more golden doorknobs and doodads are incorporated as essential for municipal governance. NO checks and balances, just spend, spend, spend on niceties and outright luxuries, because someone else, i.e. taxpayers, are stuck with bill, with no recourse other than "voting with their feet" --- meaning, MOVE elsewhere, where spendiness is less prevalent.

I am in private sector. It irks me to no end about hearing that Chicago may have to lay off 300 people and the State will have to have massive cuts. They are dissing all citizens who work in the private sector because most of us work in companies that made cuts, do not give raises, stopped contributing to 401k etc. etc. My company employed 10k, now it is 7k because of the pandemic. IL is working to protect the Democratic rule by catering to public useless employees on the back of people in the private industry. Thank you CPD for what you do. The majority of citizens support and respect you.
Retired guy here who fled Chicago but still lives in rural Illinois. I like where I live, country setting, nice home, nice area close to transportation and within 15 minutes every anmity for shopping, restaurants, bars, library, recreation etc. Local gas was at $1.75 a gallon. Wisconsin 7 minutes away and great access to the tollway or going north the freeway called I90/I39. Speaking of the tollway there have been no cash lanes open since the shutdown, all now have signage to pay on line which is a joke since there is a $2.00 charge (service fee). How many out of state vehicles are paying on line? I doubt very many and millions of $$$$ have been lost. I imagine that the toll collectors are still get paid full salaries and benefits. Not to rag on them as it's a terrible job, but millions lost thru non collection of tolls and millions more paid out on salaries and benefits. Pigster, like so many demoncraps, have the uncanny ability to totally fuck things up. It's amazing the incompetence of these people. Moving will change until Chicago voters realize that its demoncrats that are causing problems. Will they ever change their thinking?

The time for fiscal responsibility ie budget cuts has long passed. This should have been addressed years ago. The Democratic Supermajority has put Illinois in the dubious position we are in.

Madigan might be responsible for many of the really bad choices this state has made, but I personally do not think he ever took a crooked dollar. He made his money the smart way, by using his power and influence to drive people to his legal businesses and using his power to make friends. We might need Madigan in the coming 2 years as a wall against the liberal tendencies of Gov JB who is a panderer of the first order tto every liberal and black group in the state. I found Madigan to have more sense then these liberals when it comes to changing things. Don't count him out. He will be reelected Speaker of the House. I think Madigan will block any attempts at stateside police reform laws as extreme as these leftwing loons want.

No wonder they do not want to remote teach from inside their classrooms? Force the teachers to report to their schools each day and remote teach from there. But, since most of the public school students are reading and writing and using math at a 3rd grade level ( that includes 8 graders), it probably won't make a difference in the long run

I'm less concerned with who finally wins the presidency and more concerned with the 2 Georgia Senate races heading to January runoffs. The possibility of a 50-50 Senate with VP Harris as the tiebreaker is frightening. The whole country will be run like Chicago...one party rule with no checks and balances.
Scc you make good points here about cutting spending,but I worry it will increase the number of people out of work. Most citizens,even middle class ones, cannot miss even one paycheck.

On the contrary. The jails should be serving nothing but high-calorie, high-fat, artery-clogging and high blood-pressure-inducing meals. Take out the weight rooms and replace them with 24/7 ice cream, candy & pizza shops.
We're going to be paying for most of these people for the rest of their lives anyway, might as well not have to fight/chase them on the street.

Heard from a friend close to the situation that the cuts will be drastic and cuts that have never happened before. They are contemplating cutting the CFD by up to 2 firefighters, but that’s not for sure
Little known fact. Illinois has 6 billionaires living in the state. 3 of them are Pritzkers. This comment by the Governor is ridiculous. And if we had a functioning media here the citizens would be informed.

Worked on a long project with Village of Glenview officials and was SHOCKED by both their salaries and their perks. They all had benefit packages worthy a Fortune 100 CEO. Take-home SUVs, free gas, free meals, credit card, even "free babysitting" for a female Dept head. Village manager also had housing allowance and so-called "contract for life" provision where he was paid whether he remained at Glenview or not. And don't forget the golden pensions. I bet 90% of Glenview voters had no idea how indulged their village Dept heads were/are. All at taxpayers' expense, with a big shot of resulting municipal overlord haughtiness too. I was appalled, and yet knew same dynamic exists at many large cities and many suburbs too.
And all this beneficence is supposed to be accepted by voters, who are told "this is what's expected" and annual budget increases automatically occur, year after year, as more golden doorknobs and doodads are incorporated as essential for municipal governance. NO checks and balances, just spend, spend, spend on niceties and outright luxuries, because someone else, i.e. taxpayers, are stuck with bill, with no recourse other than "voting with their feet" --- meaning, MOVE elsewhere, where spendiness is less prevalent.

Above comment is where the waste needs to be cut. Below is an article saying that Illinois has 52 city managers making more than any US governor. In addition the rank and file employees making upwards of 200k is ridiculous, not to mention private sector employees earning 300!k that were allowed to piggy back on to the public employee pension plans...Gee doesn’t take a math wiz to figure out why it’s in dire straits. But hey, that kinda of political back scratching is what buys loyalty to the democratic machine of Illinois. That’s where the cat needs to get cut. Start slashing these padded salaries, start pulling the luxury benefits.

The cuts could start immediately at school districts. Consolidate a shitload of them. Why when it is a state mandated curriculum do the schools need assistant principals? Why should districts with 700 students need a superintendent and 2 assistant principals. Check them out everywhere in the state. Check out who gets hired in city and county clerk's offices and government jobs..... NOT outsiders there is no open hiring it is all pals and/or their relatives. School boards are incestous too. They award insurance contracts and construction contracts to insiders. They ensure their mouth breeding kids get jobs as teachers or other jobs with benefits ..... without any competition. If you have the temerity to question it..... they say to you.... you ain't from here are you??
