A man stabbed a social worker to death on Monday at the site where the worker provides services to homeless clients.
Hans Dewey Van-Belkum was arrested and facing first degree murder charges after allegedly stabbing Kristin Benson, who provided services to Seattle's chronically homeless as a full-time housing case manager.
[...] This tragedy was the second stabbing in Seattle in a day and the third in four days. It was also the grim milestone of the 54th homicide in Seattle in 2020, which has more than doubled all the 28 homicides in all of 2019. [Chicago] City officials have revised their plans for a new citywide response on emergency mental health calls to include non-police responder teams, an idea pushed hard for several months by activists and community leaders.
The plan for the so-called mobile crisis teams of clinicians and paramedics — without police — will now be part of a $1.7 million alternate response pilot to launch next year under the newly approved city of Chicago budget, city officials told the Tribune.
Activists, however, expressed immediate skepticism about how well thought out the plan is, and how committed officials really are to removing police from crisis response in the city.
Remember, this program is supposed to operate WITHOUT police - 24/7/365 in twenty-two Districts across the city.
On a budget of $1.7 million.
We've been saying it for months now, this "program" is going to come with a body count.

I’ve worked community mental health and emergency departments including Chicago EDs. I could not do my job WITHOUT police & security backup. In a mental health EMERGENCY, the stakes are high. Am I better than most cops at talking to a mentally ill person, of course (though some are better than I). But trust me, I am NOT going into such an emergency if I can’t run behind the cops when things get violent. They often get violent, they always have the potential. Didnt we have a DCFS worker beaten to death last year because there were no officer’s available to accompany her? These actions will not only leave a body count, even more police will leave as will social workers & counselors. This is beyond ridiculous. it takes time to work the miracles we can work. As in 1-3 sessions per week, as much time as client needs, multiple techniques, many agencies involved, community support, family support, food, safe housing, access to medications that don’t get changed on a whim, access to experienced therapists, training for new therapist, lots of consultation, so many factors it’s amazing. I’m all for psychologists and counselors being PART OF A TEAM of LAW ENFORCEMENT for EMERGENCIES. Those who this will affect the most are the mentally ill. Once again they are being used as a pawn. No one reports on how many programs have been defunded that used to help the mentally ill. Maybe if those programs were I place we could avoid these emergencies.
They started the same program with workers from the City’s Department Of Human Resources in the late 70s or early 80s. At first they said they would relieve the police from responding to those jobs. But then they didn't feel safe in responding to the jobs. So then the police had to go with them. They were a pain in the ass. They did a lot of dicking around with the jobs when the police could have solved the problem in a fraction of the time. So it didn’t relieve the police. The City doesn't learn from their past mistakes.
Just as long as the SJWs get their programs in, to hell with jr. off his meds destroying shit or threatening people. Then the city gets sued for not providing protection for the crisis team responders or the requesting citizens cuz the city should have known from past calls the likelihood of violence from the mental.
Chicago's population continues to decline significantly each year. After the current Census, it will probably drop behind Houston, TX. and be the 4th largest city in the nation. More than 200,000 Black Americans have left the city since 2010 and that number continues to grow.
This begs the question, "Why does Chicago have a larger police force than Los Angeles which has a much larger area and a much larger population?" Another question, "Why is the fire department so large when the population has decreased and their are dozens of neighborhoods on the south and west side where you can drive for blocks and there are only a few or no buildings to be seen?"
Tiny Dancer didn't close 50 schools, he consolidated 50 schools because those schools had declined in student population. Last year, Chicago Vocational which has a capacity of 3 or 4 thousand had less than a thousand enrolled. Tilden which has a capacity of over 2,000 had fewer than 400 enrolled.
The fact is, with a declining population, you no longer need many of the city workers who were necessary when this was the second largest city in the nation. That means you don't need as man aldermen, sanitation workers, school teachers/administrators, police, firemen, clerks,etc.
These are hard truths and often the truth is hard to take.

Just like idealistic young coppers, it won't take long for these crisis workers to become jaded and pro-forma in response. It simply cannot be done to take well-meaning, trained workers brought up in traditional, mainstream environments and subject them to ghetto life and expect a miraculous response. -- Once upon a time, the mentally deranged would be lock up in a secure facility where large orderlies and a good dose of thorazine would handle business. Even when you get one of them admitted for evaluation, they only hold them for a few days then they are back on the street. Most are on some heavy psychoactive medication that need continuous monitoring and periodic blood testing in order to maintain adequate hormone or neuro-chemical balance. Unfortunately once you are on these medications you have to stay on them and the majority of patients do not want to take their meds because of the side-affects or when they start feeling better they think they don't need them. The families of most of these mentals either cannot control and care for them or simply refuse. Fact is they need long term facilities and the money is just not there. Even if they did scrape up enough funds to open one, it would be maxed out and under-staffed with low pay. Then the libtard media would do their feel-good exposé on how crappy the facilities are and how horrible the residents are treated and have it shut down again.

City of Chicago can grant anyone a permit to carry(Aldermen). Aldermen are exempt from foid or CCL. They even are issued a star and hold powers of arrest. Once the OEMC dispatchers are told to ask if the mental is violent, or has a history of violence, or if they have a gun, knife, or any weapon, if they have said they will kill someone or fight someone, etc, the OEMC general orders will dictate to give the job to the police.
Also, the public will know to ask for the police if you want a quick response.
Calling for these mental justice warriors will be like calling for Animal Care and Control!

Great, now patrol gets to answer calls of “assist the Social Worker.” How long do you think it will take for the social worker you’re called to assist because she/he/x do their job will turn on you?
Guaranteed all this will do is slash more police from our budget, an increase to the social workers budget and in the end, patrol answering more jobs of “assist the social worker” or “social worker refuses” or “social worker unavailable” only with less manpower to answer the calls. Guaranteed! Honestly, manpower is going to have to be a part of the next contract negations. I’m retiring in 2 years but the union should be pushing this issue.
Am I the only one that doesn’t care about social workers getting stabbed to death? Fuck em if that’s what they want. That’s two less liberal votes. Just don’t defund the body snatchers and we’re all good.

I’ve worked community mental health and emergency departments including Chicago EDs. I could not do my job WITHOUT police & security backup. In a mental health EMERGENCY, the stakes are high. Am I better than most cops at talking to a mentally ill person, of course (though some are better than I). But trust me, I am NOT going into such an emergency if I can’t run behind the cops when things get violent. They often get violent, they always have the potential. Didnt we have a DCFS worker beaten to death last year because there were no officer’s available to accompany her? These actions will not only leave a body count, even more police will leave as will social workers & counselors. This is beyond ridiculous. it takes time to work the miracles we can work. As in 1-3 sessions per week, as much time as client needs, multiple techniques, many agencies involved, community support, family support, food, safe housing, access to medications that don’t get changed on a whim, access to experienced therapists, training for new therapist, lots of consultation, so many factors it’s amazing. I’m all for psychologists and counselors being PART OF A TEAM of LAW ENFORCEMENT for EMERGENCIES. Those who this will affect the most are the mentally ill. Once again they are being used as a pawn. No one reports on how many programs have been defunded that used to help the mentally ill. Maybe if those programs were I place we could avoid these emergencies.

Totally agree with you. Yes, every single day I look around this city and see so much more obvious mental illness on the streets than there was 10 years ago. It’s not the uncomfortableness or nuisance of it for me, but it’s troubling that many of these people cannot function or take care of themselves in just the basic needs. It’s sad really. I answered a missing person call one day not long ago. The guy had fled the hospital. He was at the hospital because he was found to have “suicidal & homicidal ideations” by social services. He laid in an ER bed in a hall for 3 days waiting for a spot to open up at Madden, when he got sick of it and just walked out. That’s a tragic reality.

Exactly, NAMI is another useless organization that receives funding only to give out referrals to other agencies who have less funding than them. I know. I’ve tried a few times to get a mentally ill relative help. NAMI was as useless as “tits on a bull.” They gave me several referrals each time I’ve reached out, all those referrals just gave more referrals. It was like peeling an onion and getting absolutely nothing in the end. I know someone who is part of a “foundation” that runs on the idea of providing “mental health” to those that cannot afford it, yet again- more referrals. When you do your research, some of these charities started by people who end up as “CEOs” never seem to be lacking in $$$$$ & have created nice little niche salaries for themselves. They end up getting all sorts of sponsorship etc- yet realistically, how many people or lives have they helped or changed? I’m very cautious who I donate to- I’ve seen first hand how few really help enough to make an impact on society- yet they are getting nice salaries they could not otherwise have had.
