ISP Shortages

From the comments, a hint that the Illinois State Police are as shorthanded as any other department:

  • They have forced Troopers from Joliet District 5 and Elgin District 2 into Chicago which has failed and destroyed morale. Naming the blunder Troop 3. Some Troopers driving over 2 hours to get to work. Now the Tollway Troopers District 15 which patrols state line to state line will be forced into Chicago Jan 1, 2024 causing some Troopers to drive in from further distances and expanding an even larger area of patrol that can not already be covered.

If you have any portion of the Chicago expressway systems running through your District, give the troopers a hand on traffic stops and such. Their backup might be tens of miles away.

Highways are mini-Chiraqs all over the state and the media never says a word.

Bless you Troopers. A word to my CPD; if you get a "Meet the Trooper" call. go like it's a "step it up." Often, City Wide or Point-to-Point are playing 'telephone' when they relay the request, and don't convey the urgency. Just saying.

I have a few months to go and have backed up Troopers and Suburban Police many of times. They do the same work we do and we all need a hand once in a while. It is just the right thing to do. In the end everything is messed up and all we have is each other.

God bless Law Enforcement

I never failed to assist ISP when I saw a stop. On midnights especially off the Ghetto Express. I mean "get out of the car" type of assist for a 1 man ISP squad. Anyone who doesn't do so is an asshole.

ISP used to be the leader in law enforcement in IL, now as you drive in any expressway not one in sight for hrs and miles. The highways are littered with mayhem and hundreds of KIA boys and DODGE stunt devils causing destruction.

Common to see 100+ MPH racers.

Driving on BOTH shoulders to pass traffic OR while traffic creeps bumper to bumper.

Word of advice. ISP conducts their traffic stops differently than CPD. Different positioning, different approach etc. if you’re going to (and you should be) back them up ASK them what type of approach THEY prefer that will work with THEIR training. Should you both stay to the rear? Left side? Right side? If you’ve ever seen a trooper approach they (because of traffic) cross over to the passenger side, walk up and turn FACING the back of the car when they talk to the occupants. In that case, if things go south you and the trooper might have a crossfire situation. JUST ASK where he/she prefers you position yourselves. We want to back them up but most importantly to be SAFE about it.

ISP is also hiring suburban coppers who have retired. I know 3 personally, my thought is that in this day & age who wants to do a traffic stop??? ESPECIALLY someone who has been doing them for 30 years? the public is almost in as much danger from out of control vehicles (drive it like you stole it) as they are from gunshots & carjackings....... we have no chance anymore last one out of the area light the fuse!

Why would ISP complain? Drive to wherever the moron bosses tell you to drive to. ISP are paid the minute they set out the front door jump in the squad and log in. A 2 hour commute each way takes 4 hours off the tour. They’re literally only working 4 hours. Take a 30 minute lunch and a personal and that leaves 3 hours and 15 minutes of actual radio calls. Or 1 fender bender crash report and the day is done. F- Pritzker, waste his gas, take the state’s money, and smile all the way to the bank.

ISP has been down in numbers since 1993-94, when then Governor Jim Edgar's administration put together an early retirement incentive. I don't remember all of the details, but the deal was a sweet one. ISP lost nearly one third of their personnel overnight. They aren't even trying to get caught up. Riverboat gambling siphoned off even more troops, and then they went to a full-time SWAT/Tactical teams that took away even more (which is pretty much a joke, even downstate since rural sheriffs have multi-jurisdictional teams-and big cities have their own teams). Specialized units have become kingdoms, and rather than dismantle a unit (and the clout promotions that go with it and in it, plus any federal grant dollars) these sections will continue to plug along. Who suffers? Well the dad who's daughter broke down on the way to her job/college on a remote section of interstate (it is not uncommon to have only one or two cars to cover five or more counties) waiting for assistance, or that lone trooper called to a domestic or an alarm with backup 15-20 minutes away, if at all. But they will continue to staff an extremely swollen administration along with units that have nothing to do with routine public assistance, because their goal is the next promotion-not the next citizen who needs a cop.

Retired ISP

You mean a specialized traffic unit to handle calls? Like the LSD cars for LSD? Because partner and I do not handle calls on the e-ways. We respond only when troopers need help or assistance but that is it. Any other call we code it. No on-view anything expressway related. Blinders on, way too close to retirement. E-ways are ISP responsibility not CPD.

Since our grandkids live in Springfield, Illinois we drive there from north of Rockford. It's about 190 miles one way. Rarely, I mean rarely do we ever see ISP on the road. As usual the 90 to 100 mph crowd are flying on the interstate without any concerns about enforcement. District 16 is headquartered in Pecotonica, Il has has no patrols from like 2am to 6am. Huge area to cover, Boone County to the Mississippi River and just about I88 to the Wisconsin border. Nobody want the cop job.

They must be short or fetal like us. Haven’t seen an ISP stop for a long time. Only accident or shooting related investigations. Drive how ever you want on an eway now. Except the Kennedy. Who’s ever in charge of overseeing this construction project should be tarred and featured. You would be elected Governor if you brought up a decade of Chicago eway construction. I will say they have a very dangerous job. 99 and stops on an eway. Made some stops on the eway before and on viewed accidents. Most scary thing I’ve done as a cop.

Speaking of shortages, SCC, can you please tell these PO’s / Beat cars to stop staying down all tour writing, and dishing out reports, and generating RD #’s for jobs that could and should easily be coded. What they fail to realize or even care is that each and every report they write and dish out ends up on Detectives desk, and more times than not, it takes these detectives hours, sometimes days, to complete the bullshit investigation with all the new programs that detectives are forced to use on each and every case (private cameras, LPR’s, pods, and about 25 other boxes that the detectives have to check in order to unfound and throw out your bogus case report that should’ve never been created in the first place. So please, for the love of God, please stop writing every single hype/bust out/etc. a BS case report just so that u could stay down on the easy jobs that you know are bogus from jump street…… There are plenty of other ways to dodge jobs that might keep you at work late….just ask around, butt-heads. The detectives can’t even keep up with investigating any legitimate crimes because of all the garbage case reports for non-criminal matters that all of these beat cars from each district right multiple times a day. Wait until one day when you or your family are the victim of a crime and it takes the assigned detective a week to get back to you because he’s been working on BS cases, like the ones mentioned above that shouldn’t have even been created. So just stop it, hit a hole, or just park in a busy spot to prevent having to actually write a legitimate report for a legitimate victim, just make sure you come out of your hole to assist other cops in need. Is that too much to ask? Nobody’s asking you to do actual police work. Those days are over. We all know that.
