Governor Fatass retreats behind the typical government solution to all problems - throw money at it:
Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed legislation Friday that aims to combat the state’s food deserts by sending $20 million to grocers to open and expand stores in underserved rural towns and low-income neighborhoods.
The measure establishes the Illinois Grocery Initiative, a new policy that will support existing grocers and help encourage new grocers by allowing stores getting grants to be able to receive tax credits and other incentives.
According to a 2021 Illinois Department of Public Health report, there were 3.3 million Illinois residents living in a food desert.
Anyone know why there are food deserts around?
Because the corporations can't do business at the prices it would require to actually, you know, make a profit. So here comes the State to make the corporations profitable....at taxpayer expense....which isn't the function of government.
Anyone know what the typical "shrinkage" rate is for a big box store? It's usually built into the prices you pay at checkout. We're told that at certain addresses in certain neighborhoods catering to non-demonized demographics, the rate is in the tens-of-thousands of dollars on a daily basis.
It's usually known as "sleeping in the bed you made."

Good I hope they take the tax breaks like whole foods and Walmart did and as soon as they hit the dealing for the breaks they shut down and keep all the money just like they did.
Interesting he's worried about not getting enough food when he visiting those communities. It's like, he's worried about what parts of Illinois have enough food he can reliably find to graze on? But, at least his money is safe outside the country!

I doubt the rural towns will get much, the majority will go to the deserts of Chicago (where theft has made it impossible to sustain the stores. Next they will be taxing for retail stores that keep getting hit with theft, burglary robbery.

The public transportation system in Chicago is incredible compared to most other cities in the U.S. Find a way, make it work. What's a food desert? I live in a small town. We have a gas station and convenience store, which for some reason doesn't stock milk, OJ, fruit, or eggs. The bar owner tried to set up a small market, but no one used it and it closed after six months.
The town 10 miles to the West has a grocery store. Twelve miles to the south, there is another grocery store. Twelve miles North is a Target, and fifteen miles northwest is a shopping area with four grocery stores and a whole lot of restaurants and other stores.

The district’s bus problems stem back to 2021, the first year back to full-time, in-person school after COVID forced CPS to close buildings in March 2020. Students were left waiting on the first day and beyond for buses that never showed. In emergency mode at that time, the district began offering $1,000 stipends for rideshare services such as Lyft and Uber. But the transportation troubles continued well into the school year.
Last year, some 365 students were waiting for bus routes the first week of school and in September, district officials said they were still working to reduce 90-minute rides for some students.
The district has blamed and continues to point to a nationwide bus driver shortage as causing the transportation troubles. It signed a $4 million contract with a longtime vendor and bus-routing software company to try to fix the issues.
But last month, on July 31, district officials announced that it would not be able to transport roughly 8,000 students on the first day of school. They offered $500 monthly stipends to families of CPS students with disabilities or those in temporary living situations. Both groups are legally entitled to transportation. The district said at the time that 3,000 students had chosen the stipend option.

A really well run grocery store makes 3% net profits. If theft levels are high you are screwed in the grocery business. That explains why you don't have grocery stores in high crime areas. Hell 20 million won't put a dent in grocery store theft on the south and west sides of Chicago.
