Democratic Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is exploring opening city-owned grocery stores to address food "inequities," according to a Wednesday press release.
Chicago's newly elected mayor announced a partnership with the progressive national non-profit group Economic Security Project to solve the lack of food access in some city neighborhoods.
"All Chicagoans deserve to live near convenient, affordable, healthy grocery options. We know access to grocery stores is already a challenge for many residents, especially on the South and West sides," said Johnson. "A better, stronger, safer future is one where our youth and our communities have access to the tools and resources they need to thrive. My administration is committed to advancing innovative, whole-of-government approaches to address these inequities. I am proud to work alongside partners to take this step in envisioning what a municipally owned grocery store in Chicago could look like."
We can tell you exactly what it could look like:
- if multi-billion dollar corporations can't make it work in the "food deserts" to the point that it's cheaper to leave, how the Hell does this idiot think government is going to make a difference? There isn't a single business that doesn't fail spectacularly once the government gets involved. But don't worry....this time all losses are covered BY THE TAXPAYER!
This is yet another attempt to launch a friends-and-family-of-government employment agency.

"inequitable access to food retail." The United States Department of Agriculture reported that 65% of West Englewood residents and 52% of East Garfield Park residents live over half a mile from the nearest grocery retailer.
So I live on the northwest side. I checked the distances to the supermarkets. The one that I normally go to and get my prescriptions from is 1.8 mi. The other supermarket is 0.8 mi. So since both are over a half mile do I have inequitable access to food retail? Also I support my stores by not shoplifting from them.

Ha, food desert. Drive through 011, 025 and 007 for the last 45-50 years and see what’s up. Food is the least of the problems. Many of stores have tried over these years and all failed/lost money and had to close. In these 50 years why hasn’t a mayor or alderperson put up their own money to open up an establishment to provide for the community. Oh yea, that’s right; they could care less. You see unregulated and taxation free fruit stands out of the back of trucks, non governmental organizations (NGOs) namely religious institutions with no cost food giveaways financed by government grants, free lunches (and after school snacks) for school children as a substitute for an actual education, non-prosecuted shoplifters/shoplifting crews which cost stores hundreds of billions annually, excessive taxation and endless regulation to name a few factors which lead to a store's imbalanced bottom line leading to closures.
Government creates problems and then proposes solutions which create more government bureaucracies which employ more government employees and ultimately more control and influence. Government, government, government is the solution! Turn off the endless free stuff and the government dependence for overall existence from cradle to grave in certain zip codes and let the rioting begin.
The losses will be made up by taxing grocery stores city wide the difference plus some juice for the dems. If you want to do business you'll have to do it their way. The government is out of control.

Los Angeles is reportedly spending $44,000 for each individual tent in a temporary tent village for homeless people in East Hollywood, The Messenger reports.
All told, it cost about $4 million to put up fencing, bathrooms, and staffing facilities for the village. Catering services and 24-7 staffing cost an additional $3 million per year, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Despite the high costs, the site is only temporary. It's located on a parking lot that will eventually be turned into public housing. But because it will take years for construction to commence on that project, the city decided to fill the space with tents in the meantime.

The honest problem has been that the retailers of foods, along with whatever else is accepted to be paid for by welfare, have no problem with this significant portion of their sales. No problem whatsoever.
Thus, retail sales prices apply.
This brain fart, to have city government provide what retail does would, should the city run establishments stock anything already stocked by retailers, effectively be in competition with said retailers.
Granted, this fart is doomed to be limited, so, the competition effect balanced against the absence of retailers well pillaged facilities likely nulls out.
Now, however, were these brain farted proposed city grocery facilities to stock only government surplus foods, or even primarily government surplus foods, plus any generic food producers' products, the competition factor would be moot.
And, as a precursor to a workfare modeled modification of the current moocher system, all employees of said brain farted proposed city grocery facilities could be required to be long term welfare recipients.
No need would there be for these employees to be paid full minimum wage actual money, as a portion of their welfare money could be applied as wages.
The brain fart idea could thus be moderately de fartified.

Whomever owns that property acted swiftly. They peppered the lot with strategically placed speed bumps. They installed entrance/exit barriers that are locked and secured after 2000 hours until morning. From 2000 hours until morning the lot entrance and exit is limited to one spot on Ashland and one spot on Archer. It stopped that mess cold. Kudos to the property owners. But pedestrian weed users exist in many more places than just the Bridgeport Mariano's parking lot because it is legal to do so.
