Porky is one of the hosts to the DNC next fall here in town and is positioning himself as one of the alternate nominees when president potato is eventually sidelined by the party. As Chicago has become a national punchline to crime stats, this is a particularly pointed shot by DeSantis at a time when CPD recruitment is lagging badly and that cashless bail law is set to take effect this month.
If you aren't vested here (family/pension/property), looking over there might not be a bad idea.

Before you go racing to Florida, a few points.
Housing prices and rents are skyrocketing. Homeowners insurance premiums are jumping. In many cases doubling to $7,000/year. Or more. If you can even get it. Many insurance companies are leaving the business. 15% of homeowners are going without insurance as it is too expensive. Car insurance ain't cheap either.
Hot and humid. Hurricanes.
Sinkholes.
Alligators. 12ft+ python snakes.
Police salaries not that great. Little union, due process rights.
And many HOAs. Plus some small towns have aggressive code enforcement agencies that love to throw tickets on you for everything.

Know someone who was apprehensive about leaving here but made the move and said you are treated in a more appreciated and respectful manner and now believes they made the right decision. Taking someone with experience is a win for Florida and a loss for Illinois. Florida supports law enforcement Illinois does not.

You've got to be kidding. You house gets severe damage. You have to get it secured. Now you have to fight with the insurance for repairs. Next, find a contractor(s) that can start work in a reasonable time. Wait six, nine months to get the repairs made. Live in a motel for all that time. Start shopping to replace appliances, furniture, etc. that were damaged. I would rather get the snowblower out for a few hours, clean up and then go inside to my warm house. And keep in mind, more far more homes have been severely damaged or destroyed by hurricanes than by blizzards.

There's nothing left in Chicago worth staying for. The future isn't bright. Better days are generations ahead if the political will can be found to attempt to fix it. Chicago is not the blue-collar peaceful city we grew up in.

As a civilian, I hate to see our police officers leave while the city gets more lawless, but you have to do what you have to do. Last night I was attempting to get to my hotel at the Palmer House, and of course ran into all the chaos. After about an hour of wandering up and down gridlocked and blocked streets, I was assisted by numerous CPD officers who helped me get to the parking garage. They let me go down streets that were closed and navigate through the madness. I really appreciate their help. I’d probably still be driving around if not for their assistance. Just wanted to say thanks!
For what it’s worth, it doesn’t seem like letting massive amounts of cars and people create chaos all over downtown in the name of a celebration makes a lot of sense. There must be a better way to mark the occasion.

I almost transferred to Tampa PD a few years ago before the Florida boom. They told me I was able to buy 5 years into their pension so would only have to do 15. They also offered a take home car and there was no residency. The main problem was they topped out at 65k so I was leaving nearly 50k on the table. CPD sucks ass for sure but we are well paid and you can work basically as little or as much as you want as far as activity. I’d say if you have less than 5 years in chicago do it. You can be the police and don’t have to worry about BLM bullshit or politics. I’m just riding it out and retiring in a few years my pension will be more than they pay

Florida is a great place to live. I question those that complain about the free state of Florida. The last time I checked, a decent Chicago home in a “decent” ( no such thing) neighborhood is well over 300 grand. Taxes on that house are up the ass and climbing well into the intestines. Hurricanes are an issue but not a big one as the media will have you believe. Heat and humidity are a way bigger deal. Crime is a nonissue because criminals are locked up and plea deals, time served with an ankle monitor at home and other conditions benefiting the criminal are not the norm. Break into a car ( burglary to auto to Kim foxx) and expect a 6+ year sentence. People respect the police.
Florida is a retirement destination. I would not recommend a career change without doing due diligence. Home prices are going higher because so many people are heading down here. Those that are nay saying Florida do not live in Florida. Sink holes, really? Yeah they exist. Like one a year, opening again, in an area the size of crook county and the surrounding counties. I ended up staying and retiring here with 24 years. The deciding factor was being in law enforcement just isn’t worth the risk anymore especially after reaching pension age and having lots of money saved. Although living in Florida has a much better quality of life. You have a real sense of freedom there where the government isn’t controlling everything. The people are left alone and crime is punished. The state is run really well with a budget surplus too. So simple but with Pritzker and a super majority of Democrats in Illinois it’s a disaster and getting worse. They love controlling the people, rewarding crime and spending like crazy

Retired, empty nester. Attended a family wedding in February in the Irvine California area. It was nice. Spoke to younger family who had relocated from Chicago working in the tech area. They explained that the tax structure is different. People aren’t ambushed by licensing fees, application fees, usage fees and there are fewer taxing bodies taking a bite out of your check. High crime areas are policed. We saw very few police vehicles but we we in a higher income area south of Los Angeles. Public college system is better than in Illinois. There are excellent hospitals. If you willing to chance it, you could make a valid argument for relocating to the area. A lot of people leaving Ca. are those with marginal incomes and education hoping to strike it big in Nevada or a state with lower or no state income tax that has a less developed infra-structure. Real estate values are holding which means they will probably rise as the economy rebounds after the Biden debacle. If we’re wrong, my wife says we can always come back to Cook County.

I retired from CPF and took a sheriff’s job in Florida. Number 1 we are highly respected in this state by the public and fellow colleagues. Stay humble and don’t laugh when they show you their ghettos.
The pay sucks for Sheriff Deps versus the police departments. The Sheriff’s are elected and the chiefs are appointed and the major cities can be liberal but not as liberal Chicago. The governor has no problem removing a state’s attorney like the types of a Kim Fox. He’s already done it. Criminals actually go to prison. The bigger cities pay more than the Sheriffs Dept and have stronger unions. Cost of living has gone up along with car and home insurance. With that being said the tax base has increased so the deputies and police officers are finally getting paid more.
The report writing is very detailed down here. A deputy or police officer has to do more work. For example, on a death investigation with no unusual or suspicious circumstances will be required to sketch the room and photograph the body. You may have to process a burglary scene for fingerprints. Not hard to learn but it is extra work.
Supervision is stricter to include uniform requirements. No way of getting away with how sloppy CPD looks. You have to wear the equipment they issue and wear it properly.
Training is 10x better. Inservice training is actual training to include Defensive Tactics, Firearms and Force on Force scenarios.
Is it worth it? On my days off, I’m on the beach. Drinking a beer. Swimming. Less stress and great quality of life.
Don't do it. Florida pay is shit. 40 - 50g's. Unless you are in Blue Miami. Also, they are an at will state. You try policing with out a union.

I know many People that have relocated or retired to Florida. They are much happier down there than here. They state taxes are horrendous here,not bad down there and you receive your services that you pay for in taxes. Wait until the bill comes in to pay for the illegals!

Laws are made by politicians.

The former is a valid reason to choose law enforcement as a profession.
The latter, not so much.

Moved to Apollo Beach, Florida in 2019. The attitude towards law enforcement in Florida is a complete 180 from Chicago. I received my CCW card in four weeks. There is a gun show every month at the state fair ground except for the summer months. You get your license plate immediately from the county tax collector in person with an on duty sheriff verifying vin for you. No city stickers and your pension is protected in this state. Sheriffs and Tampa PD, take their cars home.
DeSantis gave the schools two weeks to get a plan together for Covid then made them open all schools. You are not chained to private schools like we were in Chicago. You would not know a pandemic was going on here. Our gas was 1.89 before Trump lost the election.
We built a 4bd, 3bath, 2100 sq. Ft. home with conservation on 2 two sides for 382k complete. We are 50 minutes from Clearwater and St. Pete. 90 minutes from the Orlando Parks. 25 minutes from Tampa International. There is only one pension system that everyone pays into. We have an HOA that costs 79.00 a year. Your CDD is paid with your taxes from escrow.
There’s a better chance of being a victim in that shithole than your property being damaged by a hurricane. All construction is hurricane coded regardless. We have been through two.

Negatives:
The food sucks unless you love seafood. It’s hot as fuck during the summer and even hotter in Naples and Ft. Meyers.
I miss Chicago, the neighborhoods, and the food. There is no greater city but it has been crushed by the politics.
It is non union right to work state. ( Professional tradesmen will make a killing here.)
It is tough call to leave. I know. Especially when you are vested. But that city and state do not deserve you.

If you’re trying to be the police then leave! Done many ride alongs within and out of Illinois. Almost everywhere you can be real police and even investigate your own cases. If you want to make decent money with plenty of OT, great vacation, and good pension without having to do much other than answering your calls then stay here, but don’t expect to be the real police and stop walking cocky and acting like you are. I will say, I cannot stand Chicago culture and I grew up just outside the city. Traveling around the world has open my eyes as to how much we’ve allowed the whole “rap gang” culture to take over.

There is something to be said about being an officer on CPD NYPD LAPD
They make tv shows about us. In any event if you’re done you’re done and should have no problem picking up another gig PD related or not

I left CPD over a decade ago, and have never looked back, and have never BEEN back.
Do your due diligence. It isn't for everybody, but if you're young, aren't real invested in Chicago and can pass a polygraph, it might be for you.

I saw that picture of Sgt. Flask. While never a beauty, that picture was insane. I was on the scene when her brother got killed. Unreal.
