One-hundred-sixty years ago, President Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address and included this line:
- ...that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
Of course, since that time, the idea that citizens might participate in and be represented by their ....you know - Representatives .... has deteriorated beyond imagination.
But now, a Chicago aldercreature has discovered that sinking poll numbers are a real thing and that his constituents are getting pissed off:
Branding the migrant crisis a “bottomless pit” threatening to swallow taxpayers, Ald. Anthony Beale (9th) wants to give voters their first opportunity ever to determine whether Chicago remains a sanctuary city.
Beale plans to introduce a resolution asking his City Council colleagues to put a binding referendum on the March ballot, asking this question: “Should the city of Chicago continue to keep its designation as a Sanctuary City?”
If the answer is, “Yes,” the caravans that have brought over 15,000 migrants to Chicago — including 18 busloads last week, 12 more over the weekend and eight more busloads and two more flights on Tuesday — will continue.
[...] But to get the question on the ballot, Beale first needs 26 alderpersons to vote for it. That won’t be easy in a Council controlled by allies of the most progressive mayor in Chicago history.

God Forbid the people ever petition their government for redress of their grievances.
Next thing you know, people will expect a government that represents the wishes and interests of the people.
Is the city council, 50 in number, the same as a legislative body of Constitutional government?
The same to the city as our state legislature is to our state government?
Granted, being just one body, not two, as in senate and house of reps, does imply the answer is either no, or not quite.
Are city wards akin to state house rep districts?
Do the city council's authorities include determining what will be and will not be approved in the city budget expeditures?
Does the city's executive branch, aka mayor, propose the city's budget, or does the city council?
If the former, does the city council have the authority to deny approval in any way?
If the latter, does the executive branch, aka mayor, have veto authority over the city council?
Not disregarding the historical rubber stamping nature of our city councils, just wondering what powers does the city council have, exactly?
I remember coppers saying at some point the citizens are going to beg us to be proactive again. I can’t believe it’s starting to happen. The only problem is we’ve been beat up so bad for so many years without anyone having our back, which they still don’t, that most coppers totally gave up. They lost interest in this job. The moral is in the toilet and the fear of doing one little thing wrong and winding up fired or jailed is very real. So why would we go out on a limb to do anything for a city that has shit on us for so long now. Change some of these laws and indemnify us for chases and maybe you’ll see us out there fighting for you again. But until then, I believe most officers have sadly gave up. Plus, We’re still getting our days off cancelled left and right with this bullshit tier deployment and every weekend there’s any kind of fest going on, so start treating us more humanely and maybe you’ll see some improvement.
I still take Brandon over Lori. If he stays quiet the way he is, I may even vote for him next election 😂

The voters select the alderman to represent their ward, always a democrat. The alderman vote to enact the policies of the city, always from a democrat. The mayor is the chief executive who guides the policies they want thru the system and the mayor has always been a democrat. It is quite obvious that the voters just don't care and are quite happy with the way things are. In any upcoming election what are the odds a democrat candidate is elected by a huge margin if there is a challenger from another party, about 90%. The voters speak every election, they ignore the obvious and continue to support the problems that are killing the city. There's no one to blame except the voters. Too bad, so sad. Send more buses!
It amazes me beyond ALL comprehension that there is something like FIFTY (50) Aldersomethings, with BIG budgets. NY has 10 or 12 committee members. Not sure about other cities. This proposed measure will not pass due to “back scratching” and favors being passed around. Alll at the cost of citizen SAFETY …oh and of course financial expense…it’s only more taxation w/ FU representation.

An injunction will be entered immediately. On the referendum it won’t go anywhere in city council. However, a certain amount of signatures would get it on the ballot. Seems that most of the alderman who support this incompetent mayor know that people wouldn’t vote to spend money on illegal aliens. The idea that this city is spending ridiculous sums of money without end is ludicrous and frankly wrong when it’s a giant black hole.

It doesn't bother me too much. Our alderman stopped at least some of Shorty's crazy sh*t from happening in our Ward and, hopefully, he's fighting Lazy Brandon too. I can't imagine what it would be like under those two dictators without any representation.
Props to Alderman Beale for wanting to get the public's opinion on this issue.

I met Anthony Beale around 1998 when I was working in the 005th District. He was running for office against the corrupt Alderman Shaw. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church and was tight with Rev Meeks. He really impressed me and at the time, as he and Meeks were trying to vote 103rd to 120th Streets dry. Too many problem liquor stores. They were successful. I had to escort him to work years later when some ex con made a threat against him. As far as I know, he always supported the police. Over the past few years, he and alderman Lopez were a couple of the loudest voices calling for the National Guard to be deployed during the George Floyd riots. It doesn’t surprise me that he wants Chicago citizens to be a priority over illegal migrants. With the election of Harold Washington, black people felt they were gaining political power. What they didn’t realize is that their own leaders would sell them out by backing illegal immigration. Black power has probably reached its pinnacle. Hispanics will soon be the overwhelming majority in Chicago and Cook County. I’m sure that Beale has become a typical Chicago Democrat in many aspects, but he was a genuinely nice man and wanted the best for his ward.
The Leftist voters are idiots. They voted for these Commies who enact all these policies that further sink Chi-congo to 3rd World-level chaos and violence.
I have always said….the main person responsible for Chicago’s collapse is the mayor, but the aldermen are just as responsible. Many aldermen have been in office for well over a dozen years. They could change things if they got together. If there ever was a time to change things it would be NOW! Chicago will die if this continues. Everyone knows this. This illegal migration is endless! This will never end unless the border is secured and the illegals are flown back home. The citizens just elected a mayor that is worse than Lightfoot if you can believe that. And he really seems very incompetent and clueless along with being destructive. In response- there was an incident where an Area 4 detective was approached on Harrison by a jeep occupied by the element.

If indeed the climate shifts and the public wants the police to enforce the law again, ANY copper who actually does it is not mentally fit to serve, and definitely has no independent thought.

The reason im telling you all this is because we all know the reason what the problem is. In almost 60 years of working in Chicago nobody has ever addressed it. All the so called “programs” just lined the pockets of select politicians or “Activists “. I dont blame that Sgt for following the shitheads, glad hes ok. My advice, start planning for a good place to move to. Try and stay healthy and enjoy the rest of your lives. To th the new mayor and most all of the aldermen and government heads, I say Fuck You.
