Shortsighted Again

Do you have to fail Econ101 to be a democrat? Of course!

  • Mayor Brandon Johnson on Friday scored the biggest legislative win yet for his progressive agenda as the City Council approved a measure that phases in the elimination of the subminimum wage for restaurant servers, bartenders and other tipped workers.

By a 36-10 vote, Council members served up the ordinance that supporters say will level the economic playing field for waitstaff in Chicago’s world-class culinary scene, but that industry leaders argue will saddle neighborhood restaurants with untenable labor costs.

The Restaurant Association folded like a wet blanket on this, but then took a survey of its members:

  • The Illinois Restaurant Association surveyed current restaurant owners in Chicago about steps they might take to offset financial impacts of the minimum-wage increase and a majority of restaurants said they would:

    Raise menu prices (80%)
Reduce staff or consolidate positions (66%)
    Reduce employee hours (58%)

A few aldercreatures in the parts of the city that have actual tax generating restaurant properties in their wards sounds an alarm:

  • Another opponent, Ald. Nicholas Sposato (38th) said he “was 100% for the $15-an-hour minimum wage” that was passed four years ago for most workers, but said the city should “educate people on how to tip” rather than give suburban restaurants like those bordering his Northwest Side ward a leg up over city businesses.

“I believe we’re gonna get destroyed with this,” he said. “I appreciate the five-year ramp, but it’s still going to be a killer... Restaurants are gonna be cutting jobs. They’re gonna be raising prices. They’re gonna be adding service charges.”

Cause meets effect. If we could move our restaurant just over the border and still get city customers, we're making that move.

We took a survey of what SCC would do and found the following:

  • Go to where the food was cheaper and tastier
  • Stop tipping....since they're making minimum wage

It isn't just downtown that's getting destroyed. It's the neighborhoods, too. Where exactly is BJ going to make up these monetary shortfalls?

This is only for the people who eat in Chicago restaurants.

Haven't eaten in a Chicago restaurant in over 10 years. Haven't eaten in a Gold Coast, Rush Street or that area restaurant in over 30 years. That was before it got dangerous.

All restaurants within the boundries of the city will have to become pick up and delivery only, with seated dining like any of the many fast food chains.

No more sit down dining with services.

Unless, or until, the county does this same thing, it's a bonanza for the towns bordering the city.

The truly independent restaurants, not franchised, are being told, clearly, that they don't amount to sufficient swag/taxes and fees, and fines, and permits, etc., to be given a shit about.

So, waiters and waitresses, you just got eliminated from employment within this city'boundries. Gonna have to travel a bit, if you want to continue your trade.

Cook at home. You will save some serious cash, and eat healthier too.

If you don't know how? LEARN!
Books! YouTube! Take classes.
Sure, you will make terrible meals, but you will learn.

And teach your kids!

Food servers are serving the customer not the restaurant owners, that's why the customers were supposed to pay them.
Its another one of those "for the greater good" things the ancients already had in place.
If one person couldn't tip, most everyone else would make up for it without knowing it. And it kept the prices low so that one person, who otherwise would not be able to afford it, could still go out to eat.
Really what I think it is, is the government wants to to be sure it collects every penny of taxes from those workers and eventually get rid of cash.
I wouldn't be surprised if they moved to get rid of the independent contractor classification too (gig worker).

They're always making minimum wage, even when they get paid a sub-minimum + tip because the law says that if the tips don't bring them up to minimum wage for the hourly, then the restaurant has to cover it...

Of course that will only happen once before the moron who didn't earn the tips gets fired because it increases the labor costs for the restaurant.

Now BJ & Co. want to get rid of sub-minimum and give everyone just minimum? Yeah, well, restaurants gotta make that up somehow: Menu prices increase, service charges (or both) and that's on top of the typical 10+% BOHICA Sales Tax rate (even more in the McPier Sales Tax Overlay District), so who the hell wants to go out to eat any more?

A simple lunch will be $35+ by the time you're all said and done w/o the bullshit tip. How much can you buy at the Grocery Store and brownbag it for $35?

Tip? Assholes want 20% or more?

Fuck it. They couldn't figure out that the "Fight for 15" got them less hours, less patrons wanting to cover the increased wage, etc... So now they're going full retard.

City Death Spiral Continues. Thanks for nothing Democrats!

And please add, I would go to the suburban restaurant which may be somewhat safer because we know you are less safe in going to a Chicago restaurant.

Stop tipping is my answer starts immediately since I just learned the restaurants Are currently required to make up difference for waitstaff if tips do not equal minimum wage. Raising prices just means fewer meals out for average working person. Adding service charges same as raising price same outcome. Cutting staff, equals lousy service equals lost customers, eventually closing said establishment. Suburb me short drive away, no wait forgot I left city because of all the crime, good affordable restaurants within sage walking distance with free parking if I drive. So in summation I save valet parking charges, eat in a safer more affordable establishment with a better class of people. Thank you city council for making such a thoughtful new law.
Finally in answer to your original question about Econ 101, first you would have to teach Democrats how to read before taking that course. Also most have never had a job in their lives that required real work, government work does qualify as work, spare totally ignorant of complicated concepts like economics.

In college I made $300-500 a night waitressing. The job was always a sales position. I am floored that they are doing this. It was a relatively easy, mostly fun, industry where you could make a decent buck with no education. My mom raised three kids waitressing/bartending and we weren’t on government aide and were well taken care of. Yet again, the city is focusing on the wrong shit and driving away business, consumers and jobs… and us suckers who are forced to own homes in this shit hole will have to shoulder it all. We need to lift residency requirements, set us free

The Illinois Restaurant Association is run by a bunch of leftist wimps who do nothing to actually try to protect the member restaurants.

As for tipping, stop immediately. Perhaps people need to understand the ramifications of the way they vote.

Here we are again with a restaurant owner expecting customer's tips to make up for what they're not doing.

A Tip is customary, not mandatory. It is a reward for performing outstanding service above the normal level of service. Not to supplement the greed of the business owners.

Bye bye tipping! It was originally to make up for the lower wages they made for their service. No need anymore if they are making the same as everyone else! You don't get tipped for doing your job at your pay rate, why should they??

Chipotle doesn't even have table service, but they are testing out automation for the mobile order line because of labor costs and hiring concerns.

Sit-down restaurants will move to the model where the customer orders from their phone or a screen at the table, and a robot brings over the food. It's only a matter of time before the technology improves and this costs less than hiring a full crew of waitstaff.

This a good thing. The actual price of the meal (food, service and overhead) will be actually listed on the menu. You pay the listed amount. No tip required. I’m in Europe as I write this and that’s how it always worked here. No tip required or expected.

No more 20% added on. Just pay the amount of the bill. The wait staff is paid by the owner.

It actually will reduce the cost of eating out.

This just more social justice bullshit. The good efficient staff don’t want this, because they make more money based on the amount of effort put into their job. Now the slugs, like in every city job, will be paid the same as the hardest worker.

For the best service maybe you’ll, like your grandparents, leave a 5% tip. Average service, no tip.

Most of the good staff will find other jobs leaving these jobs to our newest residents fresh from the border.
