Fleeing Offender....Street Pizza

The urge to chase is, many times, overwhelming.

We know. We used to do it. Quite a bit. We got some awards to prove it, not to mention a couple appearances in Federal Court to defend it. We have a few long term injury issues that we'll be regretting long into retirement without a doubt.

We never got suspended, though we had to appeal one incident all the way up to a Deputy Chief at HQ, so we'll count that as a win.

We mention this only as a warning to others. We made our decisions; you'll make yours; you're all older than twenty-one. Almost no way to foresee this:

  • The driver of a stolen vehicle was fatally struck by a semitruck during a brief police foot chase in the Austin neighborhood Tuesday afternoon, according to Chicago police.

Around 2:30 p.m., officers assigned to the CPD’s Vehicular Hijacking Task Force spotted a stolen vehicle parked at an auto cleaning service in the 800 block of South Cicero Avenue. Officers approached the 24-year-old driver as he got out of the vehicle, but he ran into the street and was struck and killed by a passing vehicle, according to a statement from CPD.

The striking vehicle — a semitruck, according to police sources — did not stop and left the scene.

The stolen vehicle was parked - perfect time to apprehend the offender. Almost no danger to the publi

Subject ran, now there are foot chase restrictions. Nowhere in the article does it say police pursued, which is good.

Subject got squashed by a truck. Oops. Again, no one is reported to have been chasing him.

Truck left the scene and didn't stop. ::insert ironic laughter here::

If you think this one isn't headed for a lawyer at this very moment, without any officers being mentioned as chasing a fleeing subject, well....we appreciate your naivety and hope you maintain it forever. It's charming in a way.

I remember when policy violations were not something that could be sued for. How can you be on a task force for stolen vehicles and not be able to pursue on foot nor in the car? Seems like a nice gig.

When I first saw this on tonight's news I erroneously thought the end result was from a chase. Even then, I laughed my ass off and said GOOD! Goodbye to bad rubbish. I hope the cops involve prevail and SCC thank you for your previous service. Now excuse me, I have to go have another laugh at the misfortune of this criminal POS, one of Brandon Johnson's misguided yutes.

He only ran because he was afraid he would be shot dead where he stood. This will go on until the DA charges the officers involved with murder and Crump collects about $20,000,000 from the city. Obstruction and fleeing laws need to be adhered to with stronger penalties when you flee, fight or refuse a police order, it’s an automatic 5 years, whether you are guilty of the crime or not. Just stop and let the police do their job which is to protect citizens from harm and property from wanton destruction or theft. Law-abiding citizens are tired of hearing police can’t do their jobs for fear of some far-reaching police administrative policy, law suits or prison. We have citizens who now refuse to give their driver’s license and registration on a simple traffic stop, escalating the inevitable. Refusing to comply with police to provide information, exiting vehicle, etc., should be at least be an automatic mandatory 6 month jail sentence. No wonder no one wants to be in law-enforcement. Enough already.

Old times remember the the ghetto rat that stole the purple suede shoes from Chernin’s on Roosevelt Rd and the chap was chased by a salesman down Roosevelt at which time he ran underneath a semi trailer getting on The Dan Ryan? The best when the salesman scooped up the shoes and returned them to the window next to the door with the 012 district coppers OK.

.....We have citizens who now refuse to give their driver’s license and registration on a simple traffic stop, escalating the inevitable. Refusing to comply with police to provide information, exiting vehicle, etc., should be at least be an automatic mandatory 6 month jail sentence. No wonder no one wants to be in law-enforcement. Enough already.

12/13/2023 02:56:00 PM

There is no such thing as a simple traffic stop. This is a common delusion of the simple minded.

ALL traffic stops are, by default nature, interferences with the movements of others. Interferences backed by law, and, thus, backed by the use of force.

Enough, already, of you lazy boy recliner pontificators.

Actually, they give these "teams" special powers. They get to actually do police work...you should try it some time, oh wait...you have to be on a "team" sorry bud maybe next time.

The vehicle hijacking task force is inter-agency. City, burbs, county, state, feds, etc. We're not the boss of some of them

- Duhhhh, but at the end you can be all deputized or sworn fed or whatever but you are held to the CPD chase policy period because in that mixed team your CPD (liability/insurance)all day. State, County and Feds or the mix do whatever they want because their rule of chasing is different or not as restricted. Again, nowhere in the chase directives does it specify "chase tacticool high jacking Yada Yada are exempt from this directive".

Special powers? Like civil / criminal immunity? Or like levitation and telekinesis? Pat yourself on the back kid for being on a team. U really are special.

If this was a law abiding Florida county the head sheriff would be on the news with the video of the offender running away from the police and getting killed. But in typical corrupt Chicago fashion the media will ignore this story except when the family sues the police and city. Too bad more criminals who rob , rape and steal don’t get smashed by trucks on a daily basis. It would do society a lot of good.

LOL, "special powers". Can't drink that kool-aid. Must be some CPD special powers directive. Special enough to be investigated and sidelined for 30 days. I wouldn't try anything that says team or tactifool if you paid me, wait we make the same lol. I can see police board defense, but wait council....they had "special cpd powers" they are exempt because they think they are actual fulltime US marshals and State troopers. You definitely have to be something special there hard charger to belive that. But it's ok, keep setting restrictive standards for the rest of us, you're soo cool and bad ass. I love these dept sacrificial team lambs that make our jobs easier daily anyway.

"Why would the deceased lawyer target the police? Wouldn't the Uncaring, Semi Truck Driver be the direct cause of the deceased's sudden demise?"

Uncaring? Perhaps the driver saw the demographics of the suspect and assumed if they stopped, they'd be taken down by street corner justice warriors, or Kim Foxx.

Many coppers with more than a minute on the job have been on one team or another at various times in their careers. Most of them, once they have the light bulb moment go back to the watch. I'm guessing your "light bulb" moment hasn't come yet. It will.

And one last thing youngster. Many of coppers have done more policing than you'll ever accomplish.

Sorry "bud"

I agree that many coppers have been on a team throughout their career, maybe not you. I've learned through the years to not allow this job to be the end-all, be-all. I've also learned that the "light bulb" moment of which you speak of, is not a sign to go back to the watch. Hardly ever does a copper go back to the watch for that reason.

One last thing youngster, I've probably lost more handcuffs than you've ever put on anyone....but I'm sure other coppers have still done more police work than me, just not you.

Sorry Bud

Did the Truck have an “ Automatic” Transmission?
Was the design of Truck ever used by any Military Service anywhere in the World, thus making it a “ Vehicle of War”?
