Shots Fired

And thirty days off the street:

  • Police are investigating a shooting involving a Chicago off-duty officer.

According to police, the incident happened just before 11 p.m. Sunday near the 7900 block of South Sacramento in the Ashburn neighborhood. Police said an off-duty officer discharged their weapon during an attempted carjacking. No one was injured during the shooting. It is unclear how many shots the off-duty officer fired.

[...] The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is investigating the incident. The officer involved will be placed on routine administrative leave for 30 days.

How does anyone else feel about the "thirty days" rule? We realize any shooting is going to be a high stress event, but if you're good with it and you're coping well, is the thirty days absolutely necessary?

Well that’s because the FOP dropped the ball…. The administration of Dean Angelo and Kevin Graham and John Cantazzara..
Everyone of them were told by well experienced detectives and supervisors to revamp their entire response to police shootings since the round tables went away and yet the largest union in Illinois is still handling police shootings the way we did 40 years ago yet when outside agencies are involved in shootings in the city they laugh and refuse to talk and their lawyers come out and again they refuse to talk- hell a certain Indiana agency shot up the Southside on a police chase and simply went back to Indiana. The 30 days becomes punitive if you lose out on the OT you had put in for.

30 days seems almost punitive in nature.
Sometimes getting back to friends and family at work is helpful for people. Being back amongst your support system and having a sense of normalcy can have a positive effect on some.

I think the old 3 days, plus any additional time as necessary pending a meet with EAP and the post-OIS class at the academy would be sufficient. Nothing is stopping anyone from taking the 30 days and getting the help they need if they desire, but on the flipside those who want to get back on the horse should be allowed to do so after being cleared.

The 30 day rule is stupid and costing the officer overtime money they cannot sign up for!

It is as if you are "Guilty until Proven Innocent" in defending yourself from criminal attackers!

COPA is more worried about the criminal getting shot over the Officer safety and looking for any rule violations on the Police Officer to jackpot the Officer with a suspension!

Any wonder why police don't do shit and crime is rampant in Illinois!

I'm so done with this job and can't to move out of ILlinois!

Here is my question for the readers of SCC.
Who investigates copa for misconduct?
I have a neighbor who works for copa as an investigator and is a menace to the block. During the summer block party this copa investigator was bragging to everyone that they were "untouchable and could do whatever they want because they are copa"! Of course this idiot was under the influence as usual, and could barely walk a crooked line.

I just want to know where to file a complaint against them after I put the video of their shenanigans on youtube first.

Just in case you are wondering, I am retired and will be moving in fall of 2024. So I too am "untouchable" just like this idiot.

You should spend that 30 days doing nothing police related. That's mental health, legal, financial counseling, putting you in a gym , rest and relaxation. Thats all that's required. PTSD showing up 3-4 months later is a real thing if not taken care of from go.

It used to be 3 days with a mandatory trip to the shrink before going back.

Once again failed CPD shooting. Those 30 days should be mandatory range time for any officer missing their targets.

Has there ever been a tabulation of shots fired to actual hits. Seems to be pretty low compared to other agencies. Maybe make a higher score at the range a qualifying part of overtime. Incentive to practice more, hopefully get better.

You work the 30 days inside. It’s not free time at home. Also, per the contract, they can’t deny overtime for this reason. You might not be able to do SDI but if they offer traffic extensions in your district, you can monitor pods. That’s what they do in my district.

The invoked officer does not loose any OT that he already had scheduled. He just works it inside. Another instance of people not knowing what they’re talking about.

So the Department puts you on ice with an inside spot for 30 days to deal with the stress of a shooting incident.

But they demand that you make a detailed statement of the traumatic experience within 2 hours.....

The statement should be delayed 48 hours.

True not that many years ago if they found out you were a copper the felons would back off, now with democrats constantly bastardizing police that started with barry obama we are targets. What is going to happen when a copper gives the dirt bag that dirt nap?

Off duty and a victim there is no police action it’s called trying to stay alive from these animals. City is making these instances make coppers who are just trying to be normal citizens outside of work even second guess our own rights that we serve to protect. If I was to treat every victim like a criminal I would be looked at like an asshole by everyone why is it ok for the department to do the that to us. Also if you are going to give me 30 days each rdo should be payed in ot days atleast that would feel like less of a punishment in finding that you did not break the law can’t break policy since off duty and no police action was taken.

Been that way for over 40 years. Training and practice are expensive. Plus most cops don't want to do because then they have to clean their guns.

And the Department and the City really don't want you to use them anyway.

That is why you go to the hospital because you’re obviously going to have chest pains because you’re nervous that also buys you the time they cannot talk to you until the doctor okays it so you have a private room time to call your lawyer to be able to make a statement, not under duress

Unless YOU hire a lawyer at your own expense. Try doing that while you're on a 60, 90, 180 day suspension.
FOP and PBPA won't.

Let's be honest. The 30 days isn't truly for the copper to decompress after a high stress incident even though that's what the department will say. The 30 days is for the department and Copa to investigate and make sure the shooting is clear of controversy before putting an involved officer back on the street.
