Advantage Goes to Units

Someone who had a lot of time on their hands broke down the Sergeant promotions over the last test. It's certainly an interesting set of statistics:

It certainly pays to be in a Unit.

Firstly, because you are exposed to a lot more police work than just the regular day-to-day operations of District Law Enforcement.

Second, because you're exposed to a lot more of the connected Subject Matter Experts who provide you with insight and answers to test material.

And third, because if you need extra time to study or join a study group, it's far easier to be somewhere that you aren't attached to a regular watch answering calls, and can flex your working hours - or even your RDO's - to accommodate your efforts.

Pays to be in the office, kids. Keep chasing those numbers. It doesn't matter. What matters is that you have a screen and a chair in front of you daily. Learn from this and bid to the desk or HQ.

I think this analysis is flawed, the Detective Division isn’t a “unit” per se. Excluding merit, to be in the Detective Division you had to of taken the detective test and scored well enough to be promoted. Odds are if you did well on detective test you would have done well on sgt’s test.

Everything is on the up and up. Sons, daughters and friends of the bosses are in units getting taken care of as always. Now keep working hard you’ll get what’s coming to you. Most people will never have nothing coming to them, it is just a shit show. Years ago Patrol Men would say “l’m just a dog ass working my beat”. Don’t get up set, it pays the bills, it’s just a job and nothing more. Do your time and retire. The clueless boss are running the place with their Best Friends as their staff. Hard work means nothing. One mistake can cost you your job and freedom.

So the merit promotions are basically 50/50?
Kinda blows the whole kiss-ass theory out of the water.
Wouldn’t the favorite ones be in units instead of patrol?

Also, the detective units scored well which is no surprise.
Some people are just good at studying, retaining knowledge, and taking tests.
It’s not a surprise that those people score better on the dics test and the sgts test.

Smart people score well on tests, who would have figured.
People who do well in high school tend to do well in college.
People who don’t do well in high school become city workers lol
And smart people who become city workers get promoted.

Not exactly earth shattering.

It shows you have not spent anytime on the watch. Your average PO has nearly ZERO opportunities of "moving around". Every coveted position whether testable or seniority outside of patrol is rigged and goes to the family of bosses or their squeezes. I have even seen desk bids purposely not announced to the watch just so that one special officer with 3 years on is the only one bidding to the position. The actual police department, I'm talking the lowly patrol, does not operate like those units you "moved around" to.

If someone thought they did well enough on the test and wanted to help out their buddies, they wouldn't hesitate telling them everything they remembered from the test. It might hurt them, but maybe they'd still get promoted anyway. If someone knew they bombed it, but remembered what was asked, they'd have no reason not to help out their friends. People who are just out for themselves or have no friends would not say a word. I know when I took the test, not the multi-day fiasco version, I told everyone who asked about it as much as I could remember. I didn't know if I scored high enough to be promoted, but I had no reason not to try to help other people for the next test. That's a different situation, but I think I would've done the same if I had taken the multi-day test. Maybe your friend wouldn't "of" told you the answers because he knows "your" stupid, as you've shown with this post. Maybe he's not the good friend you think he is.

The names give a pretty clear indication of gender, at least for the 99.9% who don't have the mental illness that makes them believe they're the opposite gender. The names are usually pretty easy to group into race categories too, without ever seeing the person behind the name. Let's try some examples:

Thomas Durkin - white male
Juan Morales - Hispanic male
Jamal Williams - black male

Now you give it a try!

As someone who has worked in unit and on the beat…. The beat officers do way more preliminary police work and understand who needs to be notified and what needs to be done on scene of a critical incident. When I was in a unit, you are never the first on scene and typically the first ones to leave, so you have no idea the little details that need to be completed. But being in a unit, you have way more time to study, especially at work and a lot more study groups. Plus the sgts and LTs usually want you do your best in the unit, makes them look better.

I would actually expect detectives to do better than the rest considering they're dealing with more serious crimes and legalities on a daily basis compared to watch personnel. Academy personnel should also rank high considering their work schedule allows more study time

What’s laughable is the amount of district, radio call chasing morons that actually think that should be an advantage to getting promoted to sergeant! Yes, it’s a tiring, difficult and tedious assignment, but after going back to patrol as a score aergeant after over a decade as a score detective, there’s a reason everyone starts in patrol! Basic report writing and traffic stops is not indicative of a great policeman or police sergeant. Neither is a great detective with terrible patrol skills and street experience. The travesty on this job continues to be the cheating promotions and merit promotions of the dollies, kiss-asses, race-normed, clouted, sons and daughters of supervisors, and all-around morons! Those people continue to be hidden and given choice spots throughout the department year after year! Free promotions over and over again!

Another poster already said it but these charts are flawed. I'm a test score Sgt. I've been a Sgt. for quite a while. When I made Sgt. I was in a unit. I took both part 1 and part 2 when I was in a district. There has to be some people the same as me from this test (I know this list has gone fast). The biggest disadvantage to a district now is they are massively short officers. When I took the test Districts had 50's and 06 cars. Those days are long gone. My point being is you could study in the car back in the day. Most units are very short now. The working units have to work. They have more freedom but can't be ghosts. Then you have units that do nothing or are house mouses like Intel, Training Academy, Detached Services, and Force Review, just to name a few. They have a big advantage to study on the companies dime.

I don't know anybody. I have the $$$. How much for Sgt?
Who do I give it to? No Ald is going to take it hand to hand.
Do I leave it with the Ald secretary with my name & star # on scratch paper?
Do I give it to my Precinct Capt? or District Commander or Area Deputy Chief?

Guarantees??? If I don't get promoted do I get my money back? 25-50% for expenses?

I firmly believe a promotion can be inherited or given for sexual favors, but not bought by anyone without a firm history of clout.

This last class they balanced the race on merit. The pervious ones especially the first 3 classes it was 80 percent black merit officers. Numbers never lie.

I was promoted off of my test score to sergeant back in 1997.
I was a patrolman back then, and I made it off my score.
If you want it bad enough, you'll find the time to study, period.

That was probably the last legitimate test the city gave. You had a better chance making it because there wasn't as much cheating by the subject matter experts back then. Also, they didn't focus so much on merit promotions back then. It has gotten much tougher for the actual people who study for the test because the politicians have gotten more control over the final testing scores and the merit picks. I'm glad you made it, but if you took the test today politics would have placed you further back on the test. The city has been playing with the test scores since 1999. So it makes it much harder to actually study and score well because the politicians play with the numbers in their favor every test.

3/21/2024 03:11:00 PM

Not a "simple" battery - this fuck should have gotten the whole 45 years to serve for the seven separate criminal acts he committed. Instead, here in Hellinois, he'll get 7 years to serve "concurrently" for all the sentences, then they'll cut that in half and take off the 586 days of "time served" bullshit when he was on EM, so you're at just shy of 2 years.

When he does it next time, I hope the women tune his ass up instead of wasting time filing reports that Crimesha and Co aren't going to do a thing about...

A good solid ass kicking will do more to prevent future occurrences of such acts than 2 yrs in jail...Oh well.

Old 14 yrs retired guy said:

One way a person in a spot has an advantage is they are not confused by the GO vs the actual procedure.
My partner & I studied hard. We had to take a turn on the wagon, and refused to remove a murdered body from a crime scene. We showed our LT on scene the GO saying we needed a toe tag before moving it. He liked us, but yelled like a mother fucker, "take this body away." We obeyed and jokingly remembered this.
On our Sgt test one Q was when is a toe tag place on a dead body? The GO answer was at the scene before the body is removed (as we showed our LT). The reality was the wagon did not carry toe tags, the District did not have toe tags, only the morgue had toe tags. Because of our fucking around we scored the correct answer, while every wagon man in our district, probably citywide, got it wrong. One correct answer meant 100 pts on your finial score. It should be noted that a week or so after the test, the GO was amended to reflect the morgue was the "new" procedure for toe tags. There are 'fixed' answers on all tests, like 'notify the watch commander' which I got wrong because the GO said keep your exempt informed of your CR investigation. WC was not mentioned. This has been argued add nauseam. I do not want to re-open it.

Another trick is when they issue a GO days before a test that changes a procedure. Back in the day getting a new GO, printed on paper, held behind the Desk, was very difficult to obtain. Now you have it on line, but either way it is not fair to issue new orders, subject to testing, before a test.

I've been very lucky. But, it is hard to explain to your family that you wasted a lot of time studying in a casino rigged against you, because it is the only casino in town.

To test a theory here, see where each of these new sergeants get assigned. Odds are they wouldnt leave a unit for a chance of working the street unless it was already fixed. Do a follow up. Connect the dots. Expose the clout. So much for the consent decree.

Would only look back for our great furlough time and early ducks. Word of advice to any officer within CPD, use your medical! Scam the system like all the bums do. Only used it before I resigned but looking back wished I had used it more. CPD doesn’t care for your well being. God bless you all!

3/21/2024 08:57:00 AM

SOS? how many people on the job even know what that is? You're probably retired. Enjoy retirement, get off the blog.

Hey genius, they were using “SOS” as an acronym for “Sons Of Supervisors”, which was clearly explained in the comment. But you’re either too stupid or too much in a hurry trying to disrespect someone that has paid their dues. Who the Fuck are you to tell a retiree to “get off the blog” ?! Many of us want to hear what the veterans have to say, value their experience and don’t want to only hear the opinions of the tik-tok police !!!

To the grammar police: YOU'RE a tool. You must HAVE scored low on this last Sergeants test and was a 1st day test taker. Don't worry the next test is written and I'm sure you will be in the 1st class. Hang in there!

3/21/2024 05:17:00 PM

Hey, you're learning! There you go, buddy! You still used the wrong verb in your post, but you realized your earlier mistakes, thanks to my help. When the subject is "you," the correct verb is "were," not "was." I didn't score anything on this last test, because I didn't take it. I saw no reason to waste the money or time, since I was already promoted in the first class from the test I did take. I'm also retired, so I won't be taking the next test. Good luck to you though. I'm sure you'll do great. Even if you don't get promoted, you'll probably learn so much just by studying. You could even grab an English textbook to brush up on your skills. I suggest something at the 4th grade level. We don't want you to get frustrated and give up.

P.S. Make sure you accuse me of cheating or being connected in your next post, because there's no way I was just smart enough to get in the first class on my own.

I’m not going to really take one side or another. First, when people go to narcotics, gangs, fugitive or other units like that I do believe that you have a bit of a sharper officer going there.. now not always, but most of the time. Clearly units also have many hacks who are there because of an alderman. But seeiously, I have worked in units with some very knowledable officers. Why? Because I fell that have experienced a lot. Lots of arrests that use force, become clusters, highly involved, need to involve felony review and detectives. When you do that more often than a guy who is on a beat car cutting reports and handling domestics everyday it does give them an edge on being in those very complex situations. Don’t get me wrong, some of the best policeman I have worked with and learned from were on the watch. But, those guys also moved on to units at one time or another in their career. I loved working the watch. I loved a beat car but I also loved my time in a unit. The caliber of the officers in a unit does exceed those on a watch in many, not all cases. After my “unit” days and I became an old guy who could get days and early car by bid I went back to a watch and slowed down.. I still love it and love the guys and girls I work with. But there is a difference in many cases but not all. Some great patrolmen on the watch would make awesome supervisors but just don’t want it.. and that’s admirable. They do it to be the police and do it for themselves. I love it. But those are few and far between on many of the watches these days. Guys now a days work harder to blow off jobs, not get into a complex situation and when they do, they immediately call for a sgt every single time. If you can’t take a dump without asking a sgt a question, then you shouldn’t be a supervisor let alone a policeman. 28 years, I have three years till 55 when I leave. Took one promotion exam in my career. I didn’t get it. Bitter?? No, not at all. I love being a blue shirt and I just am not afraid to admit, being a sgt just isn’t for me. I like being a beat cop out there with the boys on the watch. Pretty simple. A lot more here need to just be able to admit that…

It shows you have not spent anytime on the watch. Your average PO has nearly ZERO opportunities of "moving around".

Try again. I spent 15 years in a shit hole Southside district, working a Bt. car. While there, I took the Sgt test, then ET test, then Detective test. I quickly made detective, off the list. Then I would've made ET off the list if I wanted it and wasn't already a detective. Then I made Sgt, also off the list.

It CAN happen but people would rather make excuses.

Hey kid, it's like this,,, the city will always come up with a fancy sounding name for a unit, spot, detail, etc,, to make it sound like a great spot to get officers to volunteer and work, then there will those "special" ones who ask mommy, daddy, auntie, uncle, boyfriend to get them in there so they can do nothing. The names change, the results never do

And 4 years of college and what I saw at every level was that the so called “poor test takers” where simply the ones that didn’t know the material. It doesn’t take test taking skills to fill in one of four choices. You either know the material or you don’t.
