We could see this happening:
- The city wants 500 officers on bicycles for the convention. A lot of them will be pulled from district manpower which is already critically low.
Over the past ten or twenty years, the Bicycle Officer has proven an adept counter-force against mobile groups of protestors who coordinate via cell phones and social media apps. They're able to re-deploy quickly, block streets temporarily, create mobile barricades, and shadow moving mobs.
Unfortunately (but accurately) it is said that generals and armies always prepare to fight the previous war. No doubt the "protestors" have been developing ways around this and the CPD will likely be caught using NATO tactics that are a decade in the past. They'll try to get around this by roping in every single bike "trained" officer.

The protesters already have, they use their own bikes. Plenty of video the past ten years downtown.
If they're going to draw by reverse seniority they're going to have to retro fit the bikes with those giant seats.

Bikes are an inappropriate intervention for protesters or violent protesters. The city learned this in 2020. Also, most of these bike trained officers have aged and moved on since 2014-2018.

They've used it... to make announcements for hours before actually arresting anyone. They won't ever use it for its intended purpose, since they just consider it to be a high tech version of a fire hose. It's very easy to stop violent "protests" and riots. You just have to use violence. Whether that violence is pepper spray, tear gas, rubber bullets, fire hoses, LRADs, batons, or a good old-fashioned body slam and beat down, none of it will be sanctioned by the department or mayor. Instead, they'll allow their police to be abused and attacked, their citizens to be inconvenienced and disrupted, their property to be destroyed, and the violent rioters to do whatever they want. You can't stop illegal "protests" by allowing the "protesters" to do whatever the fuck they want. But that's what will happen, at least until it's too late to make a bit of difference. No one will make the call early to shut the bullshit down and make arrests. No one will order mass arrests or deployment of gas. No one will do anything to actually stop the problems until they're severely out of control. And the media and politicians will call them "demonstrators" and paint the police as bad guys. We've seen it before and it will only be worse this time around. They already learned that they can do whatever they want with zero repercussions.

I frequently see officers slow pedaling in the bike lane, while creating dangerous situations because they don't know what they're doing. Better get them e bikes for the convention.
Soon enough during some protest the bike guys will be overrun because in addition to using their hands to do crowd control, they still have to maintain control of the bike. Otherwise the bike becomes the bad guys barricade or thrown object. Only in the US do you see bike cops used for crowd control. They should only be utilized as quick response, mobile intelligence teams to provide info for tactical decision making. For that you don't need 500. This DNC has the potential of being a disaster bigger than 68.

My question is WHY have the damn thing ? Everything else is online. Everything. Bike ridesharing....however, any bike not returned in due time will result in additional fees, and disciplinary action by the department against the officer.
The on duty supervisors will make sure all divvy bikes are returned on schedule and will initiate a SPAR form for any officer that fails to comply.
Maybe they should assign every officer (male and female) over 250lbs to the bike unit. Then they could pedal their way to fitness...CPD would be doing them a favor.
