A Chicago mom is raising questions about the police response after two men broke into her Wicker Park home, with four hours elapsing before officers arrived after her 911 call. The homeowner, Michelle, doesn’t want us to show her face or use her full name because the would-be robbers have not been caught.
She says she left her door open at approximately 12:30 p.m. after letting her dog out, and that's when two men entered the home. “I saw two men wearing masks standing inside my house,” She said. “I screamed – 'I am calling the police' and they bolted.”
Michelle and a neighbor ran after the men. Then, she says she called 911.
“They told me dispatch was on the way and wait outside,” she said.
Newsflash to NBC - dispatch isn't coming. You probably should have asked a couple follow-up questions at this point.
Michelle said she waited and waited and waited some more. She called 911 multiple times, and on the sixth call, she asked for a supervisor.
“ A gentleman got on and said sorry to say we have no units to send you…then there was an awkward pause,” she said. “He also recommended I call my alderman and I said why- and he said encourage him to hire more police. The dispatcher also asked me if I would consider defending myself …if I had a weapon or considered getting one.”
Now THAT has to be the best advice we've ever heard of - and from OEMC? We've given that advice to many people over the years:
- get a gun....and learn how to use it.
But now....is this a new OEMC poilicy? Because we will back them 100% on this one. You know why?
- It is your God given Right to be able to defend yourself
- The paperwork is at least a HUNDRED times easier
We'll gladly clean up dead home invaders for the last parts of our career and smile every single time.
But back to the supposed issue - during the truly busy times (and they're about to get busier with the warm weather, school being out, convention time) and the massive retirement wave approaching, wait times are about to hit crisis levels.

You listen to this for about 5 minutes with music. Then you get the message to leave your phone number and an agent will call you back, whenever.
OEMC could do this when ever they get a beatcar available they call the first victim in the stacked calls and tell them the police are on the way. Pre crder call for service.

Some of the more affluent neighborhoods are putting their money together and hiring private security. Its a few thousand from each household. They get a retired police car, 2 armed security people, and a cell phone. Neighbors are instructed to call 911 and the cell phone number that the security patrol has. Most of the calls are suspicion person calls, pissers, drunks, DPW in front of the home before going to a bar. That's what its come down to. Some citizens get it. No one is coming. They are on their own, especially in the summer. What price would you pay to protect your family while your asleep at night ? Most citizens don't understand the back log system. The jury does convict him of burning the stolen car that he fled in.
So, what this means is that when giving that advise, you should also explain that the criminal now has the incentive to kill you, because if he does, he will be the only one around to give a version of what happened. The citizen need to shoot first and often.

What do you call it when an area was white European and Hispanics take over and ruin the area, asshat? Because Wicker Park was German/Norwegian then poor and working class Polish etc before it degentrified in the 1960s& 70s. Add to it there was a large anti Polish sentiment when they did move into that area. Hispanics aren’t the only ones who can scream xenophobia. Sadly, I live in one of these white liberal parts of the city who invested heavily in the defund the police movement and put another nail in its coffin by electing both a socialist alderman and voting in this moron of a mayor. I am trying to juggle an elderly parent and see where immediate family moves in the next few years and I’ll sell my place. I wish it was sooner, but I can’t now. It’s sad because I do care as do a few of my immediate neighbors , but we are overwhelmingly surrounded by people who voted for this. I can tell the difference when I call the police just from 5 years ago- often calls I know are “quality of life” calls are being coded out with no police response. The shift of what were once priority jobs being put on the shelf is upon us & that is beyond terrifying.

Actual history is not of value to so many these days.
The vast majority of still standing buildings of solid brick construction were built by the old world craftsmen immigrants from the then WW1 decimated europeon continent.
While few remain on the west and south sides of our city, many in the other areas have survived and were restored by prior gentrification actitivities.
The progs now occupying these areas have neither the interest nor the intelligence to value these histories.
The very areas where these masterful structures are being occupied are dotted with our current crop of new constructions, the result of tear downs, mostly old wood frames, replaced with pretty, masonry veneered, frame structured designs not likely to last out the century they were built in.
Up until recently, one could wander about these areas, on foot, and savor the elegance of these neighborhoods' architectures built a century ago and still standing strong, tolerating the newly assembled surface pretty 'townhouses' so popular with the prog snobbishes.
Nowadays, not even driving around can be confidently done without some sense of impending peril.
The now 'old school' gentrifiers effectively saved these areas' classic structures, with the following generations of oh so smart youngsters grossly failing to appreciate their values as anything more than a chance to a relatively quick profit, albeit their bi-polar ignorances concerning the basis of this anticipated expectation of ever increasing values of real property. Bi-polar in that the policies of Trump/MAGA provided real economic appreciation of said real property and their oppositions to Trump/MAGA are the basis of said depreciations now occuring.
And then they complain that their self inflicted distress does not summon up a sympathetic binky offering to them.

This isn’t a win or even positive for us. The players will claim officers were being lazy for not showing, not that there are not enough. We need a spokesperson to actually explain where the hell our manpower is before we can make any assumptions as to what happened here.

Whatever happened to the hiring back retirees to work the inside positions? Oh wait a minute that did happen at the new Academy teaching constitutional policing where they hired many retired coppers with a lot of experience to help teach. They were doing a great job many accolades, but then Larry came in his minions of the children that are teaching now wanted their friends and family to come inside so they eliminated the contract, which was all paid for by the government and they brought all her friends back inside so another hundred plus coppers off the street. Great job Larry.

If shanks were still the mayor, that supervisor would have been fired!
In city agencies other than CPD, progressive disciplne and labor contracts would have been totally ignored.
There are other examples of shanks ignoring progressive discipline and also labor contracts. He would go straight for the jugular with limitations be damned.
No joke. The supervisor would have been immediately suspended by mayoral edict, then face a fast-track discharge requiring them to go to court and spend years to regain their job.
If conefled does not act like shanks, the supervisor will be really fortunate in that they will have escaped termination.

I do have a question (or questions) though. If I do shoot an intruder, would I be arrested (at least initially)? Would I have to hire a lawyer to prove self-defense, which would probably cost a ton of money? What is the likelihood of the intruder or their family suing me - with the cost for an attorney also probably costing a fortune? Assuming the intruder is only interested in robbery, and not doing any other harm, it may be less expensive to let them just go ahead with the robbery. I'm thinking that it's better (at least for me) to have the police respond rather than to take matters in my own hands. I agree we need to fund the police so that they can respond timely.

When seconds count, you better be able to defend yourself because the availability of the police is not a sure thing.
That said, do you insure your residence? Your car? Your life?
If you have a gun in your house and your plan is to use it when they force their way into your home, you better have your ass insured. Homeowners or rental insurance is not enough to protect you. It makes no difference if you kill them, put them in a wheel chair for the remainder of their life or you just wing them, somebody is going to come after you for your money, possessions and future income.
Check into USCCA (https://www.usconcesaledcarry.com) Being a member does not empower you to conceal carry, but it will protect you in the event you cap the bad guy coming through your door.

You would only be arrested if there was probable cause that you committed a crime in shooting the intruder. Are you white and is the intruder black? Then you'll have a higher likelihood of being prosecuted and/or sued fir shooting the intruder. Safest bet is to make sure you shoot when you have a reasonable fear that your life is in imminent danger. If someone breaks into your house and you catch them walking out with your 85 inch TV in their hands, it's hard to make a case for shooting them in Illinois, especially in Cook County, and especially if you're white and they're black. If, however, someone breaks in, and is armed with a weapon, and approaching you, or refusing to leave, or making threatening statements or movements, etc., it's much easier to explain why you shot them. If everything seems legit, and there's no probable cause to support an arrest, you won't be arrested. You'll probably have to talk to some detectives, which you should probably only do after consulting with a lawyer, unless you're very sure no one could possibly think you did anything wrong. My usual suggestion is to make sure the intruder is armed before shooting them. Toss him a knife or a nice heavy object before you shoot. Then yell "he's coming right for me!" Maybe help him grab the barrel of your gun after he stops moving. Try to remember those words he said before you shot him. I think it was "I'm gonna kill you" or something similar. In all seriousness though, you have a right to defend yourself against an intruder in your home, and it's better to shoot that intruder and hope for the best outcome than to allow him to carry out whatever his intentions were when he illegally entered your home. People have gotten arrested for shooting intruders in their homes, so just make sure you understand when you're justified in using deadly force before doing so. If you happen to be a black lieutenant with the Capitol police, you can shoot an unarmed white woman just for climbing through a window. The rules are very clear, but very flexible depending on who's deciding what the rules mean on any particular day in any particular situation. Good luck.

Do you have security video cams inside your humble abode?
Do you leave any windows without full coverings such that anyone outside your humble abode can see inside your humble abode?
Do you ever leave ryour windows or doors unlocked, unsecured, or otherwise vulnerable to being breached without leaving clear evidence of being forced?
Do you consider being in fear for your life to be a minimum or maximum threat required? And what are your definitions for said minimum and maximum threat?
Do you own a motor vehicle? If so, do you park on the street, in a driveway or in a garage? If a garage, is the vehicle entry door remote activated?
Once an aggressor(s) has trespassed onto your property, intimately by invading your humble abode, said aggressor(s) has effectively vanished from the sightlines of any outside your abode, IF you have maintained your abode in such a manner as to achieve this end result.
Suss out whatever you may from the above.
It didn't help that the calltaker seems to have classified it as a criminal trespass in progress.
