Splitting Up 008?
Why is this a Springfield issue though?
State Senator Mike Porfirio (D-11th) and State Rep. Angelica “Angie” Guerrero-Cuellar (D-22nd) recently passed legislation in the General Assembly to acquire a new police district facility representing their districts on the Southwest Side.
The bill passed both chambers with veto-proof margins. The legislation now heads to Gov. Pritzker’s desk for his signature.
House Bill 478 would transfer the Midway Flight Facility, 5400 W. 63rd St., to the City of Chicago for one dollar, for the express purpose of a police district. The payment would be made to the Department of Military Affairs, which currently owns the property.
We guess because it's a military property?
We and a lot of other people have said for years that 008 is just too big to be patrolled effectively. So is 016.
The only trouble is even if they open this repurposed building, where would the staffing be coming from? Surrounding Districts? That's not going to go over well.

Bring back the old 13th and 23rd!!
Case and point, even if they split the district, there is no manpower to give or make. If anything, they should make an area team over there and let them run it through for missions and what not. We don't have manpower like we used to, and the damn fucking city thinks it'll replace 1000-2000 MIN. to even make a dent in loss of manpower? Nope. This is another "we got a building on this side of town to use people in for". I don't expect it to be used functionally like the new 008 unless it's transitional for 5-10 years. The city is cheap, and the city is stupid.
What about 004? It’s bigger than 016…
Never going to happen in any of our lifetimes. The city will buy it for a dollar then sit on it, doing nothing with it for a few years, then sell it to some friend of a friend for two dollars, who will then make millions turning it into a migrant shelter.
PLEASE open up another district station.
7 of my side-boxes need an inside house-mouse spot.
~ Signed, an exempt rank who never passed a test.
It might be to late to save anything. A lot of families have moved out of Garfield Ridge and Cleaning neighborhoods. Which is west of Cicero Avenue. It’s still somewhat of a Copland, what middle-class families are in the decline in Chicago. City workers might be the last bastion of the middle class in Chicago.
There’s no staffing for it. Will never happen. The building is also a mess and will cost millions to get up to standards. The water damage from leaks and mold in that building make it uninhabitable and will take years to actually get up and running.
Oh boy. More desk dollies. SpankDaddy time.
I’m curious about this, because this property is on Airport Property!!! Would it
have to be fenced off? It really not large enough for a district build like the one’s the city currently has built.
It will be staffed by all the house mice and will only patrol the airport.
Go ahead a split 008 and then ask why you still have no police response?
It will be remodeled into one, huge lobby.
Thus, the monster of all illegals' shelter becomes their graft pot of their wet dreams.
What they need to do is simply make new Districts with new boundaries so that they are just about equal in size, about 12 square miles each. Then staff according to crime rate, geography, etc. In other words, hire more cops, get the house mouses back on the street and get the dept to about 14,300 where it should be. And in the process, dump merit promotions, reorganize the command staff ranks, and minimize the specialized units in favor of full District staffing.
This piece of legislation is much to do about nothing. Politicians pass laws like this to gain attention for themselves. What's even more frustrating is seeing cops thinking and believing that politicians are our friends. A copper will scrutinize a 99B accident but won't even apply the same logic against politicians.
Hey, can the northern half of 1631 be annexed to Norridge? From Addison north, and from Harlem to Cumberland.
If the building transfer does happen, the building will remain empty. The city will cite costs, manpower, equipment, et cetera to not go forth with the project.
The structure will just erode away.
They can move the 400 side pieces from headquarters to that place at least there will be parking at headquarters again
I think what most commenters forget about house mouses, you absolutely don’t want those fucking people next to you out there. They are liabilities and terrible coppers. I once had a house mouse doing overtime bitching she got put on the street for the first time in years. I was actually afraid for her on calls. I handled everything and didn’t let her speak. But she gets to tell her stories of things she never did and how she is the Police her friends. Let her. Don’t ever put me with a house mouse on the street.
Captains should be running district. The rank of commander is a big front for the connected to steal from the pension and taxpayers.
This sounds like someone wants a spot created for their “guy” who wants a gold star, not to mention another captain and several lieutenants.
How does this gain patrol manpower? Now there will be two districts with bloated administrative staff. The net result will be even fewer bodies for patrolling.
OT: Has the forecast mass exodus begun yet? Are there lines at Exit processing?
Families aren’t “fleeing Garfield Ridge and Clearing” like a previous poster stated. It’s the natural turn over of retirees and the elderly selling their homes to young city workers. The neighborhood actually looks refreshed from all the younger owners updating their properties. And it’s still a huge copland. Whoever made that comment about families leaving must not live in the area.
Back in the 70s before there was a 24th District the 20th District went from Montrose to Howard Imagine that.
Yea....it ain't happening...
Like you've mention, where the heck do they find the manpower?
Also, how will they divide 008? (east and west end?) the backlash on the racial woke mob will have a field day if that's the case.
It makes way more sense to remap the districts. 007 and 009 needs to expand a bit more.
This is just complete nonsense. The city has no intention of making this place a police facility. Ask yourself this question: why is the State legislature getting involved in ordering a municipality to open a building to build a station? They're not! It's to be migrant housing. Open your eyes people, hell hasn't begun to show here yet. Just wait; the devil is here and will soon show up at your doorstep.
Hire civilian employees for Headquarters, all secretary positions, review officers in district stations.
Next hire private security for Homan Square,City Hall,Courts & Police Headquarters. Assign CAPS officers to Beat Cars on 1st and 3 watches. Civilians can assist area deputy chiefs and sworn can work streets.
Bingo CPD can now open another District
That building needs a complete rehab that will cost probably more than an actual new build. Then we’v when it’s said and done they will still detect asbestos because it was done using shitty city contractors.
The city would be better off buying an underused grade school, or one that is closed. There would be no parking at 63rd St. facility. Also, a school would have more than adequate office space and restrooms. A gym and kitchen would also be a boost.
Creating a "new" police station to service an underserved area only works if you can create new police. We all know this will only further deplete manpower in the existing districts. It's similar to when the mayor promises to "hire" 200 new detectives. Detectives aren't hired. They're existing police officers pulled from their current assignment and reassigned as detectives. That depletes the manpower of everywhere else while boosting the numbers in the detective division, but still falling far short of the actual number of detectives needed. Why do Democrats lack this fundamental understanding of numbers? Why do Democrat voters fall for this fuzzy math every single time? It's pure stupidity and lies, disguised as improvement and progress.
Remember the old 016th station on Gale street when they dug out the basement by hand, then not long after built the new station.
“It won’t happen, it can’t happen, it’s uninhabitable.”
Tell me you’re from Mount Greenwood without telling me you’re from Mount Greenwood.
Some you coppers are just miserable all the time. Good lord!

Nope, the city won't have money for ato make it a police station, but they will for a restorative justice center and memorial. THAT's how Chicago works....
How is that supposed to help? It's literally down the street a couple miles from the current station.
It’s doing a lot and a time that is too late. The 008 district has been in flight mode for 30+ years. Wasn’t the orange line and the extension to ford city that never happened supposed to have done the same thing of shoring up the neighborhoods? Clearing is declining as quickly as west lawn and archer heights did and Garfield ridge is only a couple years behind it. When the bangers are more than coppers kids that have been released from prison and section 8 is abundant retirement stay and the kids that inherit property sell like they did in cal park cal city what’s the point of throwing stones at a can that isn’t even being kicked down the road? How’s that 63rd and Harlem railroad crossing overpass going that’s been discussed for what, fifty years now? If you count on the politicians to solve your problems you’re a sheep. These politicians will keep putting window dressing on a problem that will never be solved just so they can make it appear they are pushing for a solution when all they’re doing is ensuring (funny g.o. terminology) that the sheep continue to vote in hopes of seeing the emperor’s new clothes. Good luck 60638 if you keep on falling in love of the politicians fables.
Everyone here is convinced the new district will never happen just because the city doesn't have the manpower to staff a new district and all those new beats. But... everyone here is also too conveniently distracted by real life and reason to realize that there is little this city loves more than making brand new gold star spots for all the questionably qualified candidates waiting in the wings.
splitting the district has nothing to do with providing better service to the residents, you already don't have enough people to cover what you got right?
so the only conclusion that can be drawn from splitting the district is that now you end up with another Captain a couple of lieutenants a few sergeants, and more clouded spots to give away...
then you need another station, more equipment, more maintenance people, more contracts, and more fat envelopes!
it's the Chicago way don't you know?
I lived in clearing/garfield ridge for 40 years and just moved. The neighborhood is completely gone. Prob half the amount of city workers left that were there. It’s now west lawn west of the airport, which brought the usually gang crime and problems. Walk into Walgreens over there and you see the ppl living in that community. It’s all garbage now a far crime from what it was
It is a large hanger... Maybe the city will use it for storage.

You are correct property Values rising many are not moving out due to economic circumstances and higher taxes, water, garbage pickup, etc elsewhere. Drive around look at all the gutting and rehabs going on! I retired looked at other places when you have everything paid for, empty nesters and expressways, airports, transportation, grocery stores and most importantly hospitals and unparalleled paramedic services you realize how good neighborhood is. Plus of course people that moved many coppers come back here for medical care because we have the best! Heard many horror stories of people dying living in areas with slow response to medical emergencies, not interested in that. Oh and add to that many grocery stores couple minutes away, plus very active neighbors with neighborhood watches living in “Copland” definitely has benefits!

Police living in that area in in denial about the gangs surrounding them and living among them. I applaud the effort to keep your neighborhood, but it's not for me.
What about 016? It stretches from Belmont to O’hare, Cicero to Cumberland. The 3rd and 1st watches are hardly manned.
Hmmm this smells very nefarious. Why now? What underhanded deals are behind it? Bet it will be used for anything anti human.
Didn't the Board of Education own all of Midway at one time? Who benefits now?
Creating a "new" District is a monumental manpower problem with Cmdr, Capt's, Lt's, Sgt's, tac teams, etc. A better idea would be to make Clearing/Garfield Ridge into a "40" sector. Then you'd have 4-5 beat cars, a tac car or 2. Easier to find that manpower than staffing a new District. Get a storefront on 63rd St. and have a small "substation" there, for report writing, maybe a desk staffed with 1 P/O on 2nd and 3rd watches for walk-ins.
Comes out to maybe 50-60 total Police personnel (3 watches) for a new sector, .vs 150-250 people for a new District. But they'd have to keep those cars in that sector and not send a car from there to the domestic at 63rd and Central Pk.
017 is also too large, should be divided in half.

Please enlighten us, with where are you moved, we all want to know where there is this land of perfection, a place where there is nothing but joy and laughter, you do remember laughter! Oh, and please enlighten, I said how much you are paying in real estate taxes garbage pick up and how far you have to travel to the hospital to the doctor to the grocery stores. Please enlighten us we would all like to go to that place. I bet you it’s a place where there is no crying and all great people. yes I have walked into Walgreens over there. I see what kind of people are there but you know what the employees are good they have enough products so far so good remember crime can happen everywhere. Have you looked at the news Winnetka the most expensive suburb yesterday had a shooting criminals broke into a guys house got his car keys stole two of his cars. Had a shoot out. That’s Winnetka now. Tell me where this place is that is perfect! Now you must wake up from your dream from your fantasy world

Clear out the district on midnights, visibility deters crime. Most PO’s are lallygagging for half the tour inside the station and supervisors couldn’t care less. It’s ridiculous!!

How about starting with the small things first-
Gut 35th street
Get rid of force review and make those chicken-shits work the streets
Less than 10 years on and you’re at the academy? Sorry house-mouse, get some experience, then maybe you can teach something.
Cut every office by 2 people, send those 2 on the street.
THEN KEEP IT THIS WAY!
Don’t send people out on the street for 3 months then put them back inside like every other time in the last 20+ years!
They came on the Police Department to be the POLICE. Well, make them be the Police…
It’s not that hard.
009 is huge and has already been expanded

You're exactly right. I've lived here for 40 years. The only thing that's changed is the additions have turned into entire rebuilds and homes are more expensive. 99% of the crime is from people that don't live here. The only change I've seen at Walgreens is from hillbilly drug addicts to poor Mexican families.
All I want to know is will this new police station have shoddy construction work and pot holed parking lots like all the other “new” police stations? Perhaps we can just have them build a dilapidated death trap of a parking garage with scaffolding like Area 4 from the start or put in leaky roofs with the blue recycling cans under to catch the drips and locker rooms with toilets wrapped in black bin bags and “out of order” signs taped to them. Can we also include building engineers whose only known skill is putting in a blinking fluorescent light? Just “so’s” no one has to wonder if any of it will ever be properly maintained from the beginning, because it won’t.
Hate to burst bubbles, but that police facility is going to be the new Chicago Police Helicopter Unit home. With the unit getting 2-3 new helicopters, there is no room at the current facility. The newly acquired building belonged to the IL Air National Guard, and it will now become Chicago Property.
Never going to happen.
22 doesn't need a new station, it need 5 beat cars for every sector, wagon assigned to every sectors traffic car,06 cars every sector for a start.
