Another money tree located, sprouting million of dollars:
Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration on Friday took the next step toward making the “Plow the Sidewalks” campaign a reality, announcing a pilot program next year to provide city-run snow-clearing services in four areas across the city.
The pilot will cost between $1.1 million and $3.5 million in those zones, according to a report released by the Johnson administration. Though the Department of Transportation will oversee the program, the city will tap into outside contractors for the snow removal services, which would activate when there are at least 2 inches of snow on the ground and can be used up to seven times per area throughout that year.
“Chicago is a world-class city, and as a world-class city, it must be accessible for our seniors and individuals living with disabilities in the winter months during periods of heavy snow and ice,” Johnson said in a statement. “Our Plow the Sidewalks pilot program is an example of how our administration is committed to addressing the needs of all Chicagoans, and today is an important step forward in building a safer city where no resident is left behind.”
The picture they use to accompany the article is a bunch of police from 006 clearing snow in Chatham. Hard to believe we went through six-plus months of Academy time and never once did they teach us to run a snowblower.
What happened to kids going door to door and offering to shovel snow for the elderly and infirm for a couple bucks? Heck, we used to do it for nothing as long as we could haul to snow to our front yard and build the biggest fort the block ever saw.

Actually, police recruits were used for snow removal details in the past. During the winter storms of 78-79 the recruit classes were called into the police academy, transported to various CTA locations in the back of squadrols and put to work shoveling snow from platforms, switches and crossings. The mayor, Blandic was in a panic mode, and everyone was mobilized to show that the city works. Needless to say, that his leadership or lack thereof led to Jane Byrne as the next mayor.

Marching forward to the Marxist Utopia. Redistribution of the wealth (yours) to those (who support the tenets of the Democrat Machine). Why should we pay taxes so others can get their snow shoveled. Looks like they are attempting to take over the means of production (collectivism) for certain groups. How good of a job will they do? What if you don’t like it, what’s your recourse? And why is it only certain areas?
When I was still doing my own snow the local politician sent out volunteers to do snow, they made narrow paths and piled the snow high next to the paths instead of throwing into the grass. By the time I got home it was a bigger mess than if they had left it alone causing more shoveling for me.
Now I have two companies, snow and grass. They are both on time, dependable and do a fantastic job. So what’s next, the city will take over grass cutting. I have been waiting for four years to get some parkway trees trimmed. I am on the list when they will be in the area they say. Yea right. So you do it yourself.
This snow program is either one to hire the connected or hire the unemployables who never had a job before.

I have senior citizens that live on both sides of me. When it snows, myself and all three kids break out shovels and do the sidewalks stairs and driveway because that’s the right thing to do. Not because we get paid or because we have to. If the city had a lot more of that it would have far fewer problems.

I remember after one bad snow storm they told us at roll call that each car had been given a shovel and they wanted us to shovel out the rear of the cars parked on the main streets so the license plate was visible and could be issued a citation and subsequently towed. These were cars buried under plow wash which was frozen solid. We all laughed and said send the caps people out to do it because none of us is doing it.

There’s a guy who runs “Raising Men and Women Lawn Care” - basically challenges kids to mow/shovel 50 lawns/driveways etc of elderly/disabled/vets/single moms - and if you do 50 lawns he gives you top of the line lawnmowers and edgers. City should just pay him to do this at a fraction of the cost and make better kids out of it.

I’m pretty sure Illinois has a law you can’t be sued as a result of shoveling snow. I think it was passed after some towns, maybe even Chicago, passed laws saying you must shovel. There are exceptions where if you do something to actively create a hazardous situation, like direct your sump water onto the sidewalk and it freezes, then you can be sued. But not for clearing your sidewalks etc.
Snow shoveling? Have those global warming kooks like Al Gore and AOC shovel all the snow.

I pay for every service I can. House keeper, snow removal, lawn care, car wash, etc. And I do it because I can afford it. It’s not lazy, those are chores! I choose to use my time and energy elsewhere. The gym, going for a run, things that I actually enjoy. If you enjoy those things then of course have at it. However, I do NOT enjoy chores and because we make a pretty good living, I can pay for it. Maybe you should find things that you enjoy and spend your free time doing that. Then you might not be so bitter.

Because while I pay for these services to be done for me, my wife and I are working making exponentially more money then it costs to have these services done for us. And my kids? They are busy studying for college so they can get a job that pays well enough that they will never cut their own lawn either.
But hey you enjoy your day off cutting your lawn and washing your car. I'll be playing golf or enjoying the day on my boat.
