Deputy Killed, Suspect Arrested
- A person of interest is in custody after an off duty Cook County sheriff's deputy was killed in a shootout in the Woodlawn neighborhood Tuesday morning, Chicago police said.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the fallen deputy as 31-year-old Rafael Wordlaw.
[...] Chicago police said the deputy was at the Clark Gas Station with his cousin in the 500-block of East 67th Street around 1:26 a.m. in Woodlawn when a gunman approached and tried to rob him. The two exchanged gunfire, and then, the suspect ran away. Wordlaw was shot in the chest. It is not clear how may gunshots were fired, but the gunfire exchange left its mark from the gas station's convenience store to a resident's vehicle across the street.
Police said Wordlaw got back into his car after the shootout to get help, but his car crashed into a pole a few blocks away in the 6700-block of South Indiana Avenue.

It's alarming how many off-duty law enforcement are getting smoked in this city. Keep your head on a swivel and carry a full-size handgun and spare mag. Please stay off the Chicago streets after dark if you can help it but if not...give the savage no mercy, expect none in return.

Talked to a guy yesterday, he showed up at the office during the regulatory audit. Says he just doesn't deal with the crime, up early, do what he needs to, back at home at dusk. Nice life the politicians have created for him and the businesses in Chicago. I myself, under personal protest brought my lunch to the office even though there was take in supplied by the office. Fuck you, not even the tax on the 15 bucks it would have cost will I give to that city.

Very sad, and condolences to the family. Related, state of Illinois passed a law, effective, 01/01/23 ( yes a year and a half ago} that allows retired correction officers, probation officers, etc. to carry under IROCC. Yet, IROCC still will not credential us as law enforcement officers. Pathetic.
I keep telling guys that are on the job with me, time and time again. Move out of the hood, move your family to a safer neighborhood. We all make good money on this job with a little bit of overtime and can afford the $7,000 property tax and you and your family will have a peace of mind. Sure nothing is guaranteed but there are much safer areas to live.

They were never sworn??? WRONG!!!!! They must certainly do take an oath- which is sworn. Before I came to CPD I started out at the cook county sheriff’s office. When I first started I worked in court services, when I completed that academy I was certified by the state ILETSB as a peace officer and corrections officer. I then transferred to DOC for the better pay, I was able to do this because of the dual certification. I eventually went to sheriffs police before coming to CPD. Looking back at it now, I should have stayed sheriffs police. At least my days off wouldn’t be constantly cancelled like they are now.

Hey these comments are about someone who wore a badge??? WTF?? I was a firefighter we would joke with the police officers in our town about the usual cop/F/F crap. but we all knew we had each other’s back. Remember all you have is each other!!!! Knock off the petty B.S. he wore a star, he deserves our respect & sadness!! Now if it turns out he was doing something wrong then go nuts. But when I see a cop, deputy or another F/F it’s always be safe brother! Are we that callous that a dead officer/ deputy is open season on who’s better cops/deputies??!!!
