Gone are the days of stashing coins in your car for highway toll booths, the last vestige of a 60-year period when drivers could stop to deposit change or hand over cash.
The Illinois State Toll Highway Authority tore out its last physical booth along the southern section of Interstate 294 this summer, more than four years after the agency stopped using booths during the COVID-19 pandemic.
You'd think without toll booth attendants, money transport and counting, toll booth maintenance and all sorts of other overhead, there might be an effort to cut tolls? Maybe pay off a few of the bonds from the 1950's and 60's and finally make the tollways the freeways they were promised to be, instead of a sprawling bloated government entity with a helicopter fleet three times larger than CFD and CPD combined.
Nope.

It's free money. It will never go away, and will likely never decrease. They know people need to use those roads, and will pay to do so.
Cut costs? Freeways? Eliminate the graft? Keep the promises?

Democrats abound in Hellinois! Everything costs more, taxes more, regulates more, generates fatter envelopes, and promises? Meh. Whatever. Voters are morons, they'll forget all about that, and if they don't? Who cares? We got the voting machines ya'll!
Less personal maybe? But much much much larger salaries and pensions for “management”? A FOIA of all salaries and personnel would be interesting.
Of course, a big chunk of tolls goes to the never ending tollway extensions, widening of roads for miles, new bridges that cost tens of billions - all these extensions and widening of the tollway to accommodate a state population that has been SHRINKING for 15 years!!!! The contractors are just really good at political contributions. Never ending siphoning.
For the past ten years, which construction companies have received contracts? How much has each company (or their owners and officers or some other indirectly controlled entity) donated in political campaigns, and to whom? A chart delineating the above would be insightful. The state population continues to shrink but the tollway expands, rebuilds and upgrades to the tune of billions.
Can you even imagine the amount of money that was stolen?
They simply created the usual cluster and kick backs. The high tech equipment costs more to maintain. We simply keep bending over. Sadly, if something happens or you have a question, no one is around.
It’s a mess. Just like anything else this graberment touches.

Probably one of the biggest political lies, if not THE biggest, in Illinois.
There will be substantial toll increase after election. Got to pay for the Illegals someway. Also a 22% increase In real estate taxes coming again after election. That committee on taxes really doing a great job.
The tollway system in Illinois is probably the most corrupt agency in the country. There are multiple 6 figure appointed positions for the clouted ones to get a fat check and dole out contracts to the politicians friends and relatives. Try someday to call the tollway and speak with someone about an issue, good luck. The only people you end up with are those who keep as,in gif you want to pay a toll or a fine. Ask dor a supervisor, sorry there isn’t one. Ask to be connected to someone at the Tollway Authority, sorry can’t do that. Two years ago the tollway had the overpasses near me repaired and resurfaced. Every bridge was about a $600K job. 3 months after the fixes were made potholes developed. A $600K job was falling apart. I called the tollway, I sent emails and got nothing but somebody trying to get me to pay a toll or fine. I called the state rep and the tollway blew him off as well by canceling meetings until he went away as well. Now two years later the bridges are in worse shape than they were when they “repaired”. The same construction company who actually refused to speak with a local newspaper reporter when he inquired about the bad job. The toll booths and the buildings that cost millions to build and are still heated and have a/c on and lights etc are still there eating up cash like crazy. Director of tollway,$200+ a year, as a side note there have been several,in the last few years because of corrupt behavior, Chairman of the Tollway board, $200+ a year. Tollway board members $60k for attending a handful of meetings a year and all these positions are appointed. Where are the FBI aces? There are fish in the barrel ready to be speared.

When this idea was first hatched they used to motto..."free by 1973" to secure their first round of public funding.

and don't forget when the workers each got to put an empty coffee can inside the coin collector booths at the beginning of their shift and once it was full only then did the rest go to the state and don't get me started on when the cta had people collecting fares at train stations and when you would pay cash, they ring up transfer collected

With the exception of police officers, all other government jobs are useless and can be done by the private sector. Police officers are the exception because we risk our lives everyday. My wife and kids don't know if I'll be coming home.

Toll booths are one reason why, when I am driving east from my home in Iowa, I make a point to skirt around Chicago.
No one needs to use the tollways.

officially began during his tenure and have been ongoing. It is the never ending story.

The took out toll collector’s but no one was laid off just relocated to lord knows where. Tollway was only supposed to collect until it was paid off back in the day.
