"Surge Ambulances"?

Where did these come from? Who are they manned by?

  • Chicago Fire Department officials are meeting with local hospitals to devise a plan to make available the best possible emergency medical services at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago next month.

The department has now confirmed they will be providing emergency medical support both inside the secure perimeter that will be going up around the United Center in August for the DNC, and inside the stadium as well.

Sources told the CBS News Chicago Investigators the CFD also will be bringing in its fleet of extra ambulances called surge ambulances. Those will be stationed near the United Center and providing aid wherever else they will be needed.

Why do we think these are pool or retired BLS ambulances? No way they have fully-equipped ALS ambulances stashed away in a climate controlled garage.

Could have used a few "surge" ambulances this past weekend.

The article also says there will be more CFD protests and informational picketing at the United Center. Turnout at NASCAR was around 125 attendees.

They all had work to do.
CFD is the hobby job. Not like TV.

Maybe the surge ambulances are those little golf carts they use at festivals. Maybe it's a bunch of rented Nissans with some gear in the trunk. If it's actual functional ambulances, why aren't they in use already, and who will man them?

Special occasions and various weekends CFD will put the surge ambulances but they are on for 12hrs they put one in a central location and another east of the Ryan south on 67th street.
They alleviate the demand v supply a little but imagine 10 extra ambulances can do but - nobody to staff them.

I think they might be able to use some of the play nurses from those gospel churches who dress in the old 1950s all white nurses uniforms. They could fan the politicians who fall out on the floor after being touched by Democrat holy spirit at the DNC.

Usually a private ambulance company handles everything inside the UC why are they using city ambos now? They couldn’t contract a private to handle the outside of it as well just for the convention?

The city needs the surge ambulances out on the streets taking runs they need them daily if not every weekend in the summer and every holiday or event.

Wonderful! So as a taxpaying resident of Chicago I pay for CFD services through my taxes and if I actually need an ambulance, I pay extra for that too! I also get to pay for all the welfare roaches and now the protesters?

Hmm all the bodies dropping and "hidden" ambulances? Where are they hidden at? Are they hidden in same secret garage location with all the extra brand new vehicles kept for conehead? Where is all the "extra" personnel coming from? Paramedics are working constantly trying to keep people/folks alive. Just like rahm can find billions in hidden tif money now brandon can find ambulances and paramedics to staff them!Where is the money at the end of this rainbow the "pot of taxpayers gold?"

The city and DNC can hire private ambulance companies but I'm not sure their ALS ambulances are up to dealing with the real trauma we might be seeing (as well as the ghetto nurses and far-left doctors who work in our city hospitals now). And it might be time to reconfigure our "FOP Food Truck" to a mobile ER...we never see it on the street anyways. {snicker}

Thought we had a mutual response with all of the neighboring municipalities whereas when you needed an ambulance, they would come in and help the same way with mutual response for the police crazy how that never happens they will not send their people into here unless it’s a total catastrophe disaster and even then with this crazy convention coming, we know stuff is going to happen. Do you really think we’re going to get mutual response? Nope we will be the blue canaries.

Tourists should know that a person having "medical emergency" while in Chicago is unlikely to receive prompt CFD ambulance response with qualified paramedics aboard. Maybe Chicago cab-drivers and Uber-drivers should be trained to be emergency medical responders, since they're more likely to respond to summons.

Chicago, truly a 3rd-world banana republic.

It will be the old Cadillac ambulances from the 1970s, staffed by half drunk firemen with no EMT training whatsoever, sporting really sweet mustaches and sideburns, and hopefully, with proton backpacks just in case any Ghostbuster services will be needed.

There actually are equipped ambulance stowed away at Logistics that are used for festivals, heat or cold, etc. They are a bandaid disguising the fact that CFD refuses to provide adequate staffing for the ambulances they have, or meet a finding made in 1999 that even in 1999 this city needed 100 ambulances. Presently they have 80 and the bandaids and no move to change that

CFD might have the paramedic units they need, it's just that demand, for minor injuries, might be overwhelming the supply. Back in the early 2000's in Washington D.C. there was a shortage of paramedic units and a few people with serious conditions died due to the lack of a prompt response. The head of the paramedics union came out and asked people with minor injuries not to call 911 for a paramedic unit to put a bandaid on a cut finger. The head of the union implied that a certain demographic was using the paramedic service as a on call, concierge medical service. Needless to say his pleas fell on deaf ears and more ambulances were bought and paramedics hired. Could this be the problem Chicago is having? Might make an interesting news article to see what kind of calls the paramedics are responding to.

There have always been "Special Event" spare ambulances, kept inside at a location that cops and Antifas don't need to be told. They are kept stocked and do get put to use 3 or 4 times a year. Last time I saw one in the field was last month during the heatwave and it was manned by 40-hour guys from SLD pulling a 12 hour shift. You can tell a surge ambulance because it has a magnetic temporary insignia holder with a number over 100.

The reason those ambulances aren't in service every day is that if they were, we would need to buy some more just to have for emergencies, because we do in fact need to have some extra for emergencies. The city was told in 1999 that we needed to have 100 ambulances but instead they put paramedics on 75 fire engines. It's busy as fuck but we manage. Ambulance assist and non-emergency civilian assist are the EMS version of catch-and-release and no chases. It's not the way things are supposed to be run but politics dictates. IDGAF as long as the money holds out long enough to pay my pension.

That’s exactly what Chicago is dealing with. 80% of what these ambulances are responding to are less than BLS they are literally Boy Scout first aid matters and of course mostly coming from “the community”. That’s a fact. Let me tell you a few events that they go to…
- arm sore from new tattoo
- scratched by a cat
- cut face shaving
- had a bad dream wants to be checked out
- needs std check
- needs pregnancy test
- hiccups x one hour
- new belly button piercing bleeding
- man on corner whistling at birds

I’m not making this up this is what our ambulances are tied up on all day long but it’s what CFD wants it’s what their second in command wants made it clear every caller no matter what gets an ambulance no questions asked.
As a result? Half the tower ladders are broken and out of service, up to 10 companies a day downgraded from ALS to BLS, more and more medics laying up on the medical or leaving for another competitive agency, current medics exhausted and severely burnt out and nobody fresh out of paramedic school applying for Chicago on top of that the city will suspend good medics for 30 days for the most minuscule of infractions expecting these men and women to perform flawlessly despite being awake for 24hrs without food or a break. It’s a joke. Nobody will discuss the elephant in the room the emperor isn’t wearing any clothes you can’t possibly discuss what might be the problem because that will make you a raeeesisst.

About 60% of their runs they are waiting for the police. Not blaming police but that’s what it is sometimes they wait for up to 90 minutes. So that’s another ambulance tied up that can’t be used.
I blame the OEMC call takers.
They won’t say No to a single thing when they truly can are able to. Most of the call takers are women and that should tell you everything. Sorry but it’s true. Zero concept of logistics and statistics. Zero.
