Retiree Wave Growing

One of our old contacts from the source-of-all-evil (HQ) mentioned to us at the drinking establishment church service the other day that on 15 January, almost one-hundred-twenty-five Officers left the job.

Combine that with our recent post about no job openings listed for actual Police and the manpower issue takes on a serious note....again.

Conehead already proposed (succeeded?) in the old 9.5 Dwarf trick of eliminating vacancies in the budget, then claiming CPD is "up to strength." Rahm got rid of nearly 2,000 spots that way, and Conehead was looking at another thousand, minimum.

Now, all the people hired with Clinton anti-crime money started maxing out last year and even more will continue maxing out for another two years - probably around 3,000-to-4,000 cops total with this summer probably being the biggest retiree numbers in thirty or forty years.

Anyone hear the Conehead Plan for weathering this storm?

Without police to report crime/ enforce laws the City’s record of criminal activity will diminish giving the appearance of reduced crime. And with Chicago media in tow not reporting crime, once again Chicago will be the safest city in the nation. Smoke and mirrors.

As a retired who retired spring of 2024 I'd like to give some advice to officers especially those that plan on retiring in the next 5 years. Here is what I found to be a game changer in retirement....get your house paid off before retirement! If you do this you'll never have to work a day post retirement unless it's out of boredom. I've been really surprised how many retired officers are working out of necessity so what's the point of retiring. Having no mortgage in retirement literally was the game changer. If you need to cut back a bit on deferred comp also instead of of increasing contributions with raises apply it towards the mortgage and excellerate your mortgage payments. I haven't touched deferred comp since retirement and I have no mortgage. I would rather have $200,00-400,00 in deferred comp and have no mortgage payment of $2,000-$3500 than to have $500,000-800,000 in deferred comp and making monthly payments of a couple thousand a month. Personally for me this has allowed me to enjoy retirement much more, just some advice that may work for you . In my 30 year career I have never heard another officer give this advice as an option while still currently working.

This is how to defund the police without the political fallout. Make things so fucking miserable no one wants the job. Look for a police job elsewhere. Those that stay, take your time getting to jobs. Pace yourself. Try not to stress out. Take your three mental health days when necessary. I worked in a district where the desk would put the captain on the line for you to hit the medical. The captain told one of the guys he'd better be home when the sergeant came by for a medical check. Dude replied "..I got two frozen pizzas, three porno movies and a case of beer. I'll be waiting right here..."

The same officers held over, over and over, day after day. Some of these officers with late jobs and stayed well into 3rd watch just to have to return at 2200 for their 1st watch. The hatred and resentment for this department on their faces couldn't be hidden. But the no good bosses couldn't care any less. Perhaps a repeat is incoming.

Retired in March, 1998 with 33 yrs. A long time retired and moved to a nice rural, friendly community. Worked a couple of part time jobs but do not miss the city or the job. I have no connections to anything city related. No FOP, I have my own health care supplement and actually saved money from what they offered. Bad thing is I occasionally wake up from a nightmare that I’m back in the city and on the job. No regrets, zero, none, nada.

Glad you're enjoying retirement. While paying off your mortgage might help you sleep at night it may not be the smartest move. I for example have a mortgage with an interest rate of 2.79%. My deferred Comp and other personal investments are yielding over 14%. I'll gladly take the profit on my investments rather than pay off the house. You can also write off mortgage interest up to $300,000. If i could get 2.79% I would take out more money on the house and invest in the market. I also took a job making another $100K on top of my pension. Not because I have to, because I want to. There's more to life then sitting at home collecting a pension and telling the same war stories over and over. To each there own.

Damn that was quick. The entire department has taken a nose dive… but make sure you have those bump cards and don’t forget to attach the doctor’s progress notes. If you fail to get the notes the card will be rejected by the medical section at the request of Superintendent Snelling.

The sad thing about all of this is that Superintendent Snelling can’t mentally get past “Welcome To The Gym.” That was his power. His mind is still stuck on bump cards and uniforms. The stuff that’s mainly enforced in the academy. While uniform and appearance is important. The Superintendent should be focus on more pressing things like morale, incompetent/careless leaders, officer safety, strategies, liability, reform, etc.

In my district, the moron DSS would transfer officers to the WOL when officers requested to be placed on medical roll. The obese WOL would answer the phone with “whattttta do youuuu waaaaaant!!!” Is if he was annoyed and pissed(intimidation tactic). When the duo realized the scare tactic wasn’t producing desired results they both resorted to not even placing officers on the actual medical roll when we called in. Not even kidding, many of us would need to call 2nd watch to be placed on the roll. What a bunch of clowns.

If you did 30 years and still had a mortgage, you did something wrong my friend. Just ONE extra payment a year on a 30 year nut knocks it down to 23 years. There’s things called “Amortization Tables”… you shoulda looked at them before you committed to a 30 year term. Then there’s always 15 and 20 year terms. Trust me, it doesn’t take much discipline and minimal extra money per month (whether via OT or a side gig) to make that happen while staying maxed in DC and contributing to additional investment vehicles. I also used my tax returns to make an additional annual payment. I bought my house with 10 years on and it was paid down off when I started my 27th year. But yes, I do agree that not having a mortgage in retirement is huge.

I’m sorry but who retires with a mortgage? Is that a thing? I’m going on 18 years and my house is already paid off. With the amount of money we make there is no reason you cannot take a 15 year mortgage. And if you can’t, you really cannot afford the house you bought. When it comes to the 457b, your money almost doubles at 10% return every 10 years so that 500k you retire with turns into 1 million in 10 years. You pull out 4% and now you are collecting 40k a year on top of your pension.

I would argue against your assumption. I retired in 2023 with $200K mortgage at 2.55%. I have over a million in deferred where I'm making 19% per year on average return. So I'm making over $200K per year from deferred per year. And I'm still getting a deduction on my taxes as well from my mortgage.

This is one of the most valuable pieces of advice I have read in a long time. Dave Ramsey gave this advice to his listeners years ago. I followed this advice and left after 28 years and two plus decades ago.

Look at a mortgage amortization sheet showing the interest paid each month versus the principal. Pay down the principal as quickly as possible. Forgo the big trucks, boats etc. and retire your debt prior to any full retirement. You will save thousands. For the past 20+ years we have been without a mortgage, traveled around the country and Europe never touching our deferred comp balances except for our RMDs. Time passes quickly when you are retired and before you know it the feds are looking for the deferred taxes. Until that time pay off the mortgage and any credit card bills. It will pay off in the long run. Oh, then you will have nothing to write off on taxes??? Well, you will pay $2 to the feds, or you can pay $3 to the bank?? The left over $1 is yours.

A bunch of guys I retired with went home and went nuts sitting in an empty house with the wife still having to work for years more. The job was their life and they either go back out there and get a side gig or drink all day long.

Good advise. For those speak of deferred comp remember you will pay av20% capital gains tax. Take out 10000 and you pay 2000 Federal then another 4.90% to the state thus 2500 in tax on 10000. Get rid of the mortgage=peace of mind!

What are you complaining about? 1998 was a great time to be a Chicago police officer. Shit, even 2012 was a decent time and not too long ago. You wouldn't make it out of the academy in 2024. It's that bad now.

Cuz I make $130K base salary to work from home an average of 4 hours a day. And when I do report to the unit I drop a slip for a few hours OT. Same with Beat Meetings. Same with community liaison meetings. I’m gonna gross $250K AGAIN this year. THAT’S why I’m still here at 56 with 32 years on. Unlimited time off. Numero Uno in seniority. Run all my errands and work out on company time. Life is good. It’s better when your job is ZERO stress and you make a quarter million dollars a year on a HS education. Oh yeah… got a primary residence, summer home in WI and three rental properties in a Red State. A 7-figure deferred comp balance and 4 adult kids put thru college. Most importantly… ONE wife of 35 years and going strong. Don’t hate the player, hate the game, kid.

Good to hear and I hope you’re able to keep it going.

At 33yrs I was maxed out pension wise and fed up with the city. As usual the job itself was always entertaining and in the post I didn’t complain, just laying out my situation. Pre planned the retirement date, moved family out to the country 18 months before I left and then stretched my last days into the new year and picked up the furlough, personal days, and some time due until March.
Dealing with the city insurance when it was still around was a nightmare having to deal with the crowd at benefits management and when it ended we went to an independent insurance plan that was cheaper and better. Not complaining just letting people know that you have to plan your escape and when you do it’d life changing for the good.

I got hired in the mid 90s, made Sergeant, off the list.... leaving next year with the age, and over 30 years, to lock in the pension....researched Detroit bankruptcy, retirees got 91% pension, no COLA...preparing for something like that here...take care of your health, everyone...it is the only thing that matters..forget about this psychotic city, there is life after this job

God Bless. But Michigan did not back Detroits pension the way I understand it. Illinois backs Chicagos.

What’s wrong with you? 20%, federal and state taxes, health care. There will be nothing left of your paycheck. Let the politicians put the states share in and not continue to kick it down the road. If they had been paying their share we wouldn’t be in this situation

There are many reason. Could be kids, family alimony and child child support, health to name a few Or maybe to continue to max out deferred , invest OT in stocks mutual funds.

A lot of them don’t know how to do anything else or the job is the only life they have. And when they do go or get forced out, there’s nothing to do and health declines.

The City has been making the payments in advance and more then they should. They will not claim bankruptcy cause then they have to open the books to a forensic audit and everyone would be able to see where the money is going. That why they will never do it.

Payoff you house as quickly as you can.. you may need the money down the road for illness/some other big expense . whatever... Rehab /nursing home cost 100,000 year Medicare pays only for some months. At home care the same.. 4-$24,000 a year, depending on care .. It could be your spouse

They charge $300 a quarter I believe. Well worth the money in my opinion. My last 12 months show a 12.83% return. On $500k that's over $64,000.

Hey old school caps, you just listed a bunch of reasons you should retire and start enjoying what you "worked" for all those years. You're gonna end up working yourself into the grave or stumbling into a career-ending, pension- killer incident. All that money is nothing if you're dead before you get to enjoy it. Retire to your summer home, collect your rent, hang out with your friends and family, spend a little cash on some nice dinners and traveling, and leave the job you're addicted to behind.
