An Actual Good Idea
And from California of all places:
Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper announced Tuesday that deputies will no longer respond to non-criminal mental health calls, citing a recent federal court ruling that removes qualified immunity for officers in such cases, CBS News reported.
The policy change follows the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals’ decision in Scott v. Smith, which stemmed from a 2019 Las Vegas incident where Roy Scott, experiencing hallucinations, called 911 for help, according to the report. Responding officers used force, leading to Scott’s unconsciousness and later death. The court ruled that the force used was unreasonable and questioned whether officers should have been involved at all, as no crime had been committed.
“We deal with crime, not mental health crises,” Cooper stated.
After all, progressives have been demanding "mental health responders" for years now. Might as well save taxpayers money and start sending them instead of cops.
Just make sure their life insurance policies are all up-to-date.

Pay me sgts pay and I’ll go to those calls with no gun, only less than lethal.
Pay me lt’s pay and I’ll go with no gun and no less than lethal.
America
Nice!
That should work well when responding EMS waits outside until notified that the scene is secure before entering. And we all know that every call to 9-1-1 is always spoken in truth.
Great idea long overdue.
A policy I agree with.
I think it’s an excellent idea, but no LEO leader in Cook County/Chicago has the balls to protect their officers in this way. By the way, whatever happened to that pilot program? The one with the MH professional in a van with an officer that you weren’t allowed to request over the air and who were just supposed to volunteer themselves to whatever job they saw fit?
Howdy! How can we hep ya?
Mental thingy?
Sorry to hear that, sounds like sumthin us Cops don't handle. You might try 311.
Have a California Day!
What could wrong? Nobody will care if a few mental health responders bite the dust.
It'll last a week but it'll change a lot of minds. My suggestion for Chicago? Make the big mouth aldermen, or women, show up.
and make sure those civilian crisis workers are of the same race, gender and political opinions of the citizens needing help,,,, would not want to hurt their feelings, don't ya know
Excellent.
Next should be domestics, who are we to say how someone expresses love for another?
Pay me double salary (second as a paramedic) and I'll go in with my paramedic hat on, there is your immunity.
Are they going to send the baby blue non EMS ambulances like Chicago board of health has?
This was a good decision by the sheriff. That said, qualified immunity has been a cover for a lot of bad LEO actions over the decades and should be heavily curtailed.
This Sheriff has a shall issue attitude when it comes to issuing CCWs.
If it’s not in progress police should not respond. AI is making reports for police departments now.
Sounds good, dupe it to CFD.
The libs have long advocated removing police from mental health issue calls and sending social workers instead. That may seem like a good idea but it can be a very dangerous job. Recruiting workers seems to be the main problem. Not too many social workers want to be responding to rough situations in the middle of the night on weekends.
What?
How about, we stop responding to "anonymous" calls?
conehead campaign promises that sworn officers wouldn't respond to mental or domestics he lied
How about an ole fashion Lion tamer guy, whip, chair...pistol.
..stand bye crew has a fire hose.
We can promote the zoo at the same time...
What would all the white suburban hippie women do if they couldn’t help with a peace circle? Can we just insist they solely take on all calls involving raging 6’4, 275 pound black men have a psychotic breaks?
Yeah, John D. When’s the last time you saw a judge get sued for letting the same guy walk out of court 8 times before he finally murders someone?
And it looks like Domestic Court is going to start issuing search warrants for guns at the request of victims seeking OOPs.
