No Response

Mere weeks after we wrote about the Sacramento County sheriff ordering his Officers not to respond to non-criminal mental health calls, a small-town Illinois Department is doing the same thing:

  • The Salem Police Department is no longer dispatching officers to non-violent mental calls.

Deputy Police Chief Tyler Rose says the department is participating in a pilot program ahead of a new law that prohibits initial response to mental calls that takes effect in July.

“If it is non-violent, there are no weapons, there no threat to another individual, it’s someone simply having a mental health crisis, the legislation forbids us from dispatching officers right away,” Rose said. “That will have to be referred to these mobile crisis units. For Salem, it’s going to be members of the Community Resource Center that come out and make contact with that that individual.”

Rose says if the Community Resource Center is not able to respond within 60 minutes the call will revert to Salem Police to handle.

This is going to be State Law starting in July? Outstanding.

They ought to be cutting TV and radio commercials and airing them every hour telling people that the cops aren't coming and they better have some contingency plan in place....like a taxi and a large neighbor on call with a straitjacket.

Here is the big question:

WHO and HOW will EMC decide what is a "non-violent" call?
Someone will be held responsible when that "non-violent" honor student turns ape-shit nuts in about 6 seconds flat. Then, kills a room of unarmed individuals.
Get the popcorn out.
I'm going to enjoy watching the evening news again.

How is non-violent, non-threatening going to be determined? Who gets blamed if SHTF?

Every call will be he/she/it/them etc etc are off their meds, fighting with family members, taking kitchen knives, and threatening to kill everyone and kill the police also. And of course a squad will be dispatched to the address/street location of the mental meltdown.

Last paragraph says it all. Cannot wait until all these basement dwelling keyboard warriors in the name of social justice and New-Day-Quarterbacking are disrupted in their own renting lives to settle a score. Wanna bet the volley gets tossed back at the police for evasion in not protecting its community. Kick-the-can, hence no responsibility, no compassion, no empathy, just more politicking. Ugh.

They started sending social workers, who worked for the City, in the late 1970s to handle these types of calls to relieve the police of handling them. The workers would then call for the police because they felt they were in danger. Then when the police would arrive and take command of the situation they would try and tell the police what to do. The program was a failure and was disbanded.

The Sangamon County OIS that set off this current wave is constantly described as a call to a mental health crisis. It was not. It was a report of a prowler.

There's never been evidence that there was no prowler. The deputies didn't find one by the time they arrived, but that's the usual result of those calls.

There was no mental health crisis until the woman decided to pour two gallons of boiling liquid on the deputies.

We're also repeatedly told that the deputy did not turn on his body camera. He did. Video from both deputies has been made public.

Families will certainly learn to claim that person in a mental health crisis is making threats even if he is not in order to get a faster response. That happens now.

Please don’t film the mentals. They hate it and will cause an increased mental breakdown. 1 hour in the throws of a mental breakdown on the CTA will result in a 70% increase in private citizens eventually having to do the Lords work on their own.
